Playing as a good person.

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 12:12 pm

I play as a 'good' character, but in the context of the game world.

I kill off 'bad' characters and Thalmor, as that is the name of the game...undead don't count, as you are actually doing them a good deed and more or less switching off their power (they are already dead, you are just making them lay down and accept it).

I don't rob or steal, or trespass, although I do loot...hey, I might be good, but that dead bandit sure doesn't need that 'axe of 500 septims', does he? I don't deal with the DB, nor the Thieves...and if it were possible, I would take them all out.

Having said all that, I will occasionally do the wolfman thing to rip up a bunch of dudes, or to run around a town scaring little kiddies, but I then reload a prior save...gotta have some 'fun' occasionally.

i definitely don't equate "good" with pacifist or nonviolence or no killing of anybody in this game.

the character i created is a "good" nord loyalist with a backstory, goals, likes and dislikes. if a quest comes up that i choose to continue with i will do what's appropriate to further his goals or the goals of his faction/beliefs. he is not a "bad" person.

there may be some questlines that "force" me to go against my character and i will then have to make a decision whether to alter my beliefs or just discontinue.

if you're talking only about a pacifist, non-violent character, then, you will definitely need to omit certain quests/storylines because being a pacifist doesn't give you the right to complete all questlines in that manner.

if you are in a questline that makes your character do a questionable thing, simply decide on a penance to perform afterwards- collect 5,000 septims worth of food and dump them into the play-yard at honorhall or something

Then maybe stop playing Elder Scroll games, they all start as a prisoner, seems to me a good person youre aiming for isnt gonna end up in prison.

Yes, because as we all know, only guilty people get arrested and put in jail. if they weren't guilty, why did they get arrested?

great suggestion halthor! i'll definitely use it.

especially, since skyrim's "crime and punishment system" is a tad underdeveloped.

Illusion magic is debatably good. "Calm" can be good, even if it messes with someone's head, because it stops the violence (unless you think it's never good to mess with anyone's head--and you might have a point.) Frenzy can be considered self-defense if the choices are either "be killed" or "get them to turn on each other."

But I'd never say that a character who did that was perfectly good. Just possibly less evil than someone who chops people's heads off regardless of whether there's another option.
