Playing as a Khajiit.

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 5:35 pm

My first 2 characters I played as an Imperial and as a Nord. I usually don't use the Nord race, but since this was the Nord homeland I figured I'd give them a try. Tons of hours into the game and I hear how Khajiit are discriminated against (as well as most elves and argonians) and not allowed into the cities. So I decided to create a Khajiit to see if I would experience Skyrim as a minority and maybe get a different experience from it.

Unfortunetly, playing as a Khajiit is like being a Nord. The only difference is, if that Bandit Chief kills me he's gonna turn me into a rug.

I just think it is funny that I can freely do whatever as a Khajiit and then talk to someone who is basically hating on them and does not change when I use a Khajiit character. There are characters who will tell you how khajiit are not really trusted or welcome in Skyrim. And the Khajiit traders tell you as well. Yet I am able to do anything I want.

It isn't a big tragedy, just a little weird being as it seems like discrimation towards non-Nordic people is heavily used in the game.

I have not tried any of the other races, but i hope that the Dark Elves get a different experience when in Windhelm...

Same here dude. Khajiit is my main race and the discrimination just isn't satisfying. It's a weird thing to say, but it's true. The racism woulda made it a little bit funner to play as Beast or Elf race.

Only the merchants aren't allowed in the city if I remember correctly. Khajiits aren't really seen in the cities because they probably don't like the cold so they stick to warmer places.

There are a few remarks from the citizens, enemies and guards, but it usually comes down to role-playing, thus Skyrim being a RPG.

If I remember some say merchants and some just say khajiit are not welcome.

And no offense but setting up camp outside the city walls would not be warmer than staying inside the city walls. Especially in Windhelm.

And the Khajiit aren't really seen because bandits like to prey on them! I always find their caravns destroyed and their bodies strewn about. I found a cave that was full of all the minor races who looked like they were starting their own community when bandits attacked followed by Trolls who won overall. I wish a similar cave existed except with a small thriving community of the 'unwanted'.

and please do not take my reply as hostile, as it is far from it!

Yeah but when discrimination is such a big part of this game you shouldn't have to imagine it.

no offense

This was something that also caught my attention. So now my kahjiit is a ranger far from cities and civilization. Live and die in the badlands where every day and night is a fight for the survival

Fenrat used to be very hated... but then his name got around. Life was not easy, and steryotypes became a reality for Fenrat. Threw his hard life, after his brother vanished Fenrat joined the dieing theives guild. Eventually that did not satisffy the adventure in his life, and he moved on.

Fenrat loved kids, so he visted the Adoption house in riften often. One day a weak nord went into the adoption house. Curious Fenrat followed him. When he got inside, he found Grelode dead, and the Nord with a Bloody Dagger in his hand. Fenrat tackled the man, throwing the knife from his hand. With a wave of anger his claws came out and he sliced up the Nord. Thats when the assistant came in, and spotted 2 dead bodies, with a bloody Fenrat standing over them. She called for the guards, and Fenrat had to run. Chased right out of his hometown of Riften. He ran until he made it to the town of windhelm, were he bought an inn, and washed up, and rested.

Fenrat awoke in a strange cabin with a mysterious figure perched on the dresser. She accused him of killing a "Contract". Fenrat was not a murder, but the mysterious figure didnt want to hear it. He was forced to kill one of the people, who sat bagged behind him, no idea of what was to come. After he killed the Nord sellsword he was washed into years of murders, and assassinations. He became rich. He even killed the current Emperor. But then his brotherhood betrayed him...

He knew once more this was not his calling, and he left the brotherhood to there fate. As he traveled the roads, he saw his brother Gentrat. He found this odd as the last time he saw his brother was over 10 years ago, near the border of Skyrim, when there Caravan was ambushed by some black robed figures. He could have sworn they killed Gentrat.

His brother was not the same however, he was hideous, and thirsty for blood. He tried attacking Fenrat, but Fenrat fought him off, and ran for it. A distant voice echoing after him, "We will meet again, Brother...".

A Vampire had stolen the kind hearted brother he once knew, and turned him into a bloodthirsty savage. Vampires... They were to blame... they were going to pay!

(Anyways, thats kinda my roleplay, how i intergrated racism into him being forced into theivery, and then later being blamed for the murder of Grelod.

The caravans sell illegal products like skooma. That's why they aren't allowed in cities. Khajiit can go in, they just would rather not. One reason would be the intense racism towards them. They could handle Morrowind despite being the second most common race you'd see being slaves, but that place had Imperial influence by the time we got to see Vvardenfell. Not much Imperial influence, but just enough for it to be seen as something becoming an extension of the culture of the island.

In Skyrim, the racism is much more bully like. This is usually very shallow stuff, but it can get to people's heads. Even the Khajiit who lives in the Solitude Lighthouse doesn't go out of it. He acts pretty bitter, as well. I don't know if the Nords know that Elsweyr is a client state of the Thalmor right now, though. If they do know, this might be the reason they don't want them around. This seems unlikely due to the fact that Bosmer are pretty much accepted despite many being with the Thalmor.

Nords probably don't know of all the stuff the Thalmor are in control of, from what I can tell. Beast races have almost always been looked down on. Oblivion was the only game where they really were accepted, and that wasn't by huge amounts in some cases. It is too cold in Skyrim for most Khajiit, though. There's no point in going there to them because there's a war going on and they want nothing to do with it.

They are taking advantage of it, at least the caravans are.

I'm a bit on-the-fence about this one.

On the one hand, I would HATE being barred from cities and the like just because I'm a khajiit. It drastically reduces the amount of quests, amount of trading and hinders you in just about every way possible.

On the other hand, it would be nice to have a minor degree of hate towards Khajiit. Just a lowered disposition would suffice.

This is similar to how I played, having no other choice than joining the guild who would take anyone looking to make some coin. Except instead of not finding his callings, my Khajiit happened to both excel at and enjoy being a thief, going deeper into his stereotypes. The dark brotherhood just like you was an accident I entered into, but a profitable accident. He also chose to be a vampire out of his own free will, to better protect himself from the hatred of others in skyrim. Now, through controlling nearly all of the underground market, my Khajiit is one of the richest people in skyrim, and more connected than Maven Black-Briar, and although the racism is still there, most are too scared to even try to make a remark against me.

Yes, I hate the lack of disposition in the game. I mean, bethesda removed it because they thought a number didn't do it justice, but still, the number is a nice indicator to know whether someone hates you or not. Know it feels like I can't tell

RPing is fun but dang those mods look so fun. Have you checked out castle defense? That looks epic... I'd love to do that it'd make a nice patch ;)

I know what you mean, I had a ton of fun playing a Khajiit in Morrowind and running around freeing slaves.
Also Bethesda, we need marriable khajiits(and the other left out races). My poor Khajiit is feeling lonesome :'(

I remember playing the original Everquest mmo when it came up and faction was huge.

Some guards would attack you on site just because of your race. It was fun because to access some certain areas required going through territory controlled by someone you might not be on good terms with.

Some cities were strictly off limits unless you did enough stuff to make yourself friendly to the populace.

Would love to see this in Skyrim or future games.

I had a khajiit playthrough once but couldn't stand how all the bandits said the same thing over and over. "you'll make a nice rug, cat!" It got too repetitive and annoying.
