Playing without HUD, fun or not?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 5:49 am

I tried turning it off.
It was very eerie as I suddenly felt like I was back in Morrowind, those old feelings of wandering about in the fog came racing back.
I actually had to pay attention to signs, roads and such and overall made traveling more fun.
I also kind of liked not being able to see what the lock level of a chest was.

However not being able to see my vitals was just too much of a downside and turned it back on.

I play with it. I find it more immersive to KNOW how much health my character has left, which doors are locked, what type of ingredient he's picking and so on.
I tried without it, but it annoyed me to no end.

I will give this a go, but I rely on it alot lol, I hope I can keep the compass..

I would love it if I could make the menu more opaque, sometimes it's hard to see due to the in game showing in the background.

one that gives you better quest descriptions so you can actually rely on the description only to find your quest target.

DO WANT. I'm assuming this works by fleshing out the journal entries? Can you post a link or just the name of it? I'd like to check it out. Thanks!

I play with a mix of HUD. Since i only have 100 health, my health bar is important.

However, i play without any sort of crosshair and i recently disabled the compass and quest-arrow.
There's two mods that make that playable, one that identifies caves as belonging to any major quests and one that gives you better quest descriptions so you can actually rely on the description only to find your quest target.

My game is similar, though I do have still have quest markers on my map, only. So I tend to rely on my map and visual cues for navigation.

And I would not go back at all. Magic can be tricky to aim without crosshairs, but arrows are surprisingly easy. And the badly intrusive compass is gone, which is the best part. When I had it on, I tended to watch the compass more than my surroundings, since most important info would appear there before I ever saw it with my eyes, whether it was a cave or an enemy.

We use a gimped compass - so that only things we have not visited and the custom marker are on it. It doesn't show anything else. We don't use the map unless we absolutely have to.
Works ok actually.

Right now I play Skyrim without compass and cross-hair, but could someone describe what playing without the HUD exactly implies? Can you still have conversations with people, search containers? What about the subtitles and the notices when a quest starts, completes, etc.? Thank you. :)

You take the HUD down to 0 (all the way to the left) on the menu in Skyrim.

I play without the compass. But I like seeing my Health bar during combat.

Same here. I like to see my health bar because pain in real life you feel it; in a virtual world, you must see it or hear it.

I play without it even on console -and without crosshair of course.

I play without HUD, I find it better but I wish NPCs would give at least basic directions to quest locations.
You can use the spell "clairvoyance" to reach your destination if you play a mage

Well, you have the "heartbeat" for the "pain"..

So, do you play Skyrim without HUD?

No. I tried it once. With the HUD off, I tried to fight a bear using a bow. I succeeded (but badly) and then tried to loot the corpse. And then I immediately turned the HUD back on.

I am unable to enjoy the game unless I have HUD feedback.

I've played hudless since around February after finally having enough of the ridiculous undiscovered locations been on the compass at all times, It was hard at first but very happy with it now, I can pick up the correct item 99% of the time without the crosshairs and I'm pretty accurate with the bow too. The only negatives are when I need to go to a certain specific house for a thief guild job I need to keep opening the local map to see where the persons home is. I tried playing a pure melee char hudless but was hard not knowing how low my health/stamina was. Ranged/Magic is much more manageable just add most points into magicka and you should not have too many problems without the stat bars.

I play without the compass. Thats easily turned off in the SkyrimPrefs file. I've just installed the Better Quest Objectives mod so hopefully that will make playing without quest markers viable for me.

I fixed my .ini so that it only disabled the compass. That way, I can't magically sense enemies, and I don't magically know where what is. I have to search for stuff, like in Morrowind.
But I prefer to be able to see my Health/Stamina/Magicka, so I keep those on for practical reasons.

I like it for immersion but i cant use magic without crosshairs....i think they should change the crosshairs to a small white dot like you could do in gta and red dead redemption

On consoles it's not very fun to play completely HUDless. On PC with mods you can disable individual parts of the HUD like just the compass.

I couldn't even play the game with the compass markers. They bored me by taking excitement out of the game. The sneak eye indicator does it too.

I play without crosshair, sneak eye indicator, quest arrows, and markers in my compass. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b148/ActionDragon/Skyrim/HUD.jpg (compass is visible only when sneaking)
