Playing without HUD, fun or not?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 11:34 am

I've made a http://youtu.be/o5XgJyDVQyU?hd=1&t=10s. (If you click the link it starts 10 seconds into the video, I just thought I bring you guys bit quicker into it)
If you like it, please tell and I'll create more - something better, if I get time.

So, do you play Skyrim without HUD?
I had some serious trouble without HUD, as you can see in the video.
Playing without it tho, sure makes the world feel more "real" in some way.

I play without the compass. But I like seeing my Health bar during combat.

I play without HUD, I find it better but I wish NPCs would give at least basic directions to quest locations.
P.S - Nice vid!

I didn't ask what you guys wanted me to play. I had a question for the community about what they think of the idea of playing without HUD, what problems do you often face and how do you deal with it?
Such as you have no idea what your health bar is at or your enemies at..

Thank you! Really appreciate you saying that. Took a lot of time for me to fix it up properly.
Oh yeah, one thing without having a HUD that bugs me, I can't see the name of the herbs I'm collecting or finding for the first time.

More than feeling at some kind of disadvantage because I have the HUD off, it really is just a matter of me preferring to have all of the feedback that it provides me. I tried to play without the HUD, attempting at a "more immersive" experience, but I simply don't feel like the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

HUD all the way for me.

You can tell you put a lot of time into it, and it was worth it. Yeah I find things like not being able to see what you're picking up and whether it is take or steal quite annoying at times, but I still prefer no HUD.

I use iHUD so it's normally off. The compass is toggled on/off as I like but has no markers at all (aside from the cardinal directions, of course). Health et al show up, too. Eventually, I'm sure Gopher will incorporate full customization as he did with iHUD in FONV. He missed XP as was in FO3, though. Not sure why.

I also use kuertee's auto-save and time/clock, so the time of day is stated as a popup message but in general terms such as "it's a couple hours after sunrise" or similar wording.

As far as issues, before I used iHUD, I simply turned off the compass and HUD and had no problems.

I'd say it all depends on learning as far as issues (i.e., there aren't really any issues so much as learning a certain system). After that, it's personal preference.

I think it's brilliant without the HUD. Makes you much more careful and reliant on sneaking around, peeking around corners, and standing still to listen to your surroundings before charging into places. Also makes you much more cautious in battle when you can't see your health/magicka/stamina bars. If you're in it for total immersion, it's the way to go.

The only cons are not having your health visible in bad situations and targeting small items while trying to loot. Archery and magic use takes some getting used to, but after doing it for a while, you memorize where the "sweet spot" is (where the reticle used to be). I prefer having it off, but I may end up putting it back on later.

Agreed.

Been playing HUDless since november last year. It took me about 10 mins to get used to it. The only drawback is not being able to know what books are without opening them, which can make looking for a particular book a little tedious. But the overall svckiness of playing with a HUD far outweighs not seeing the book titles.

I play without the compass. I have a mod that gets rid of the sneak eye because it feels too cheaty to know whether you are seen or not. I have the opacity of the rest turned down to about 40% but need those little crosshairs for aiming spells and bows and like being able to monitor my vitals so I don't turn it completely off.

As to directions and getting around, when I'm given a task I look at my map and see where my destination is and carefully chart a route to it (basically, giving myself directions) then do my best not to use the map again.

I wish the HUD was small and tucked away like in Morrowind, or even Oblivion. The compass is nice, but not the markers that give away any incentive to explore.

I decided to turn off the HUD one day travelling in the beautiful countryside. Killed one guy who ran from me, then got attacked by archers on a ridge and had to run round and round to get up to them.... and suddenly I had no idea where I was, where my horse was and I walked around waaay toooo long like someone who should not be out in the woods without A COMPASS!

The landscape changes too quickly.

I'm using iHud which lets me decide when certain elements of the HUD will be visible and when they won't. Haven't quite gotten brave enough to play without magic/health/stamina meters that appear when my stats are fading, and I still have the crosshairs come on if I'm sneaking or in combat so I can get my aim straight. But the compass is on toggle and I toggled it off when I started my new game. Wasn't sure I'd like it but I really prefer not having it. Now I have no HUD elements visible at all about 90% percent of the time and I love it.

It was about time for the weekly startup of this thread. As stated in the others, I tried to run with no HUD on the console. That failed, because the identification of items and doors did not show up. Now that I am on the PC, I use Gopher's iHUD. It is the only way to play. No compass, no crosshair, no M/H/S bars, unless needed. No sneak eye and no enemy health.

I get it all off and still get the item pop ups showing what is what. Great stuff indeed.

I loved it, until I tried picking up items that are near a bunch of other items I don't want. I'd love it if Bethesda gave us the option to toggle each individual aspect of the HUD. I'd leave everything off except the names that pop up for items and people.

(Yes I am aware the PC has the ability to do this, but I am on Xbox.)

I play with a mix of HUD. Since i only have 100 health, my health bar is important.

However, i play without any sort of crosshair and i recently disabled the compass and quest-arrow.
There's two mods that make that playable, one that identifies caves as belonging to any major quests and one that gives you better quest descriptions so you can actually rely on the description only to find your quest target.

I do rarely. I generally just leave it on but during those times when I do have it off I have just gotten used to paying attention to how many hits my characters can take before dying and stuff like that.
