Poor sound quality on the PS3

Post » Sun Jun 17, 2012 12:18 am

Hi guys! So I've watched a few PS3 Skyrim walkthroughs and after that I borrowed Skyrim for the PC (laggy as heck! on my PC at least) from one of my friends and one thing I've noticed was that the audio quality (bitrate) was so much lower on the PS3 version. I don't know why but some sound effects like when you swordfight or attack somebody with whatever weapon, they just sound very bad in comparison to the PC version.
Now, this might be a video quality issue and not the game's problem so I'd like some people who actually own the PS3 version of Skyrim to share their opinions about this.

Why? Can't you just borrow a game for a short amount of time?
Even if i tell you that i am planning to buy it for my PS3 once 1.4 fixes it. IF it fixes it, of course.

Sometimes I have a choppy sound (for 1-2sec) using headphones. But this is not Skyrim specific.
The quality is due to the developer. As the PC-section states, Skyrim hammered one core while all others were mostly just idling (before the update for Core2. Note, it still doesn't make a sophisticated use of more cores!). Personally, I think it is quite safe to assume that the ps3-version behaves similarly. Since the ps3 doesn't have a dedicated sound processor, this output has to be computed by the cell. Then, if you don't use it wisely you won't be able to achieve a good quality ... and have to turn it down to a level it is performing "acceptable" again.

My sound on my sourround is incredible. On my headphones is a different story. It sounds amazing then once the lag starts happening the sound starts to be really choppy. It still will sound good but it will start to almost mute in a way. If it wasn't for the sound cutting out it would be perfect. This game is full of problems but I still play it and love it.

Same. Problems with headphones, none without. Doesn't bother me much since I rarely use my headphones.

I have noticed the odd audio skip while playing, it could be related to the choppiness of the game in general. I would guess that once the game's choppiness is fixed, the audio would remain on at a constant.

How anyone comment until we know WHAT SOUND SYSTEMS you were testing the audio quality on?

"PC and PS3" does not tell us what specific sound systems were used for output.

A lot can depend on the TV's speaker system, mine has an Onkyo stereo plus sub and the game sounds fine.

I use a 5.1 Logitech system output in DD. It's boomin, unfortunately the sound is not the problem. It's the gameplay glitches

Guys, i was talking about the audio bitrate. An example of this is when you watch music videos on Youtube. You switch from 360p to 720p and the audio is so much crisper and clearer, right. So from the footage i saw online, the PS3 version has that 360p audio quality. I just wanted to know if that's true.
Thanks for the help of everyone, though.

Same here, using the optical out gives a decent sound, with Turtle Beach PX5 headphones.

Sometimes when in caves/mines the effects are amazing rumbling (more than once I'd thought the sound was actually from outside), dust falling, water drops, fire crackling. No problems, unless having the NPCs skipping random dialog lines (very annoying especially on quest givers) :mage:

I'm worried more about the video quality. I know the Xbox pushing out 1080p is only a result of upscaling, but it looks so nice and I want that too.

I very doubt that the audio on PS3 has an inferior bitrate. That's what the Blu Ray disc is for. Actually on my DPL II receiver it sounds just fine. Too loud even at low volume, though.

But as many other things also the audio is glitched. Sometimes riding an horse there is no sound from the horse at all for a dozen seconds. Very rarely but it happens. This using the composite as the main audio output (and the HDMI as secondary for the tv speakers).

Exactly, the video you saw online.......so the percieved sound quality was dependent upon the person making the recording and would you believe, some people actually doctor videos to make something look bad.

The audio quality is perfectly fine unless you are a complete audiophile where you would probably only listen to Radio 4 (UK) and would tend not to play video games. ;)

the only real gripe i have with the sound is in story sequence dialog exchanges they couldn't even bother to have the next npc's audio file play AFTER the last one is finished. it's as simple as not having the next sound play until the last one is finished. but nope, people are constantly interupting eachother and cutting off peoples sentences and sometimes just half of the first word of a sentence gets played then the next person speaks because they dont know how to properly work with switch coding. its ridiculous. this happens in the main story line a lot so its just poor programming and development. i mean right off the bat when ur about to be executed u see dropped sentences and audio files not completing. like the timing of the dragon landing and the people sayin what do u see? its in the clouds! and it already landed is hilarious. its like they dont even test their own games they are lazy developers who should be ashamed of themselves and im getting so sick of it. this company is a sham that releases faulty products. almost every aspect of this game is broken and legal action should be taken. i hate how the gaming industry works now and new laws should be written. im so sick of being treated like money and even talked down upon by the company themselves in emails i have had about enough of the lies, deceit, disrespect and false advertising. they told me to buy another copy even to fix a broken quest one time in oblivion because the words integrity and refund arent in their vocab. all they care about is our money. as much as i love the world in which these games take place i would be very happy if this company loses everything at this point and isnt allowed to make games anymore. it sickens me that they can treat customers the way they do and get away with it. these are mostly my opinions and i couldnt care less if u think im just whining. ill say what i want to say and so should u.

Exactly. Why would a BRD have reduced audio bitrates? Makes no sense. Some random youtube video?
