Just another OMG IT WOULD BE LEIK SO COOL IF!

It's canon that horses didn't survive the apocalypse. It's been said that they're extinct.

The best fast mode of transport in fallout would be small chop shop buggy's like from road warrior.

this. OMG this. I would kill for the game engine to support dune buggies so's I can do donuts on the NCR's front lawn. Then blast my dixie horn(Don't ask where that got scavved) and speed off into the sunset.

Screw horses. They can't do burnouts.

Horses are a lot harder to catch than house cats and owning to wild mustangs, they are pretty damn sturdy. They can live off of dirt and weeds and still be healthy. I don't care if they are in there just arguing for horses surviving the wastes.

Agree 100%, I never liked the assumption that horses didn't survive the apocalypse. Especially when the cars stopped working, horses would become as invaluable a mode of transportation as they were Before the advent of the car. No one ate them or killed them because their ability to travel fast was Precious then (even moreso than it is now). If horses were not a complicated animation to build, I'm sure they would have been modded-in.

If we did have horses, that would be my fast travel.

If cats were all eaten, I don't see why horses weren't. Just imagine it with a nice side dish of squirrel and a cold bottle of Nuka Cola. Mmm-mmm

Cats weren't all eaten, I remember in the first 2 games I saw several cats.

Have you ever played TES IV: Oblivion? Did you ever ride the horses in the game?

Vehicles (that includes horses) do not work well with the Gamebryo engine, or at least Bethesda hasn't found a way to make them work effectively. Horses in Fallout: New Vegas would work out the same way as in Oblivion; horribly.

Horses were not that bad,It was a pain during combat but otherwise they were fine.

LIEK OMG WOULDN'T IT BE COOL IF WE COULD HAVE HORSES WITH MOUNTED GRENADE LAUNCHERS?

But seriously, think about it. Riding a horse, while pwning the [censored] out of the Powder Gangers with a mounted grenade launcher?

Horses couldn't survive the last ice age in North America. They seem to get sick at the drop of a hat. Ever heard the saying "sick as a horse"? Most animals didn't survive the environmental devastation after the Great War, so horses, who have flirted with extinction multiple times in the past on an environmentally healthy planet, were doomed when the nukes rained down. Besides, in every historical instance of starvation where horses are concerned, the horses were the first to be eaten.

And the ability to travel fast is not precious when you have nowhere to go. Seriously, think about this. The nukes have fallen, you have no idea who else or where else may have survived. You have a little community where you are at. You all have enough food, if only barely. Most people are going to stay put where they are currently secure. Even if they did decide to travel, using a horse would be foolish. Going to split some of your meager rations with it? No? I guess it can eat the irradiated grass and die. The best use for it would be as a pack animal, and brahmin do that better. And what do you think you will do when you run out of food in the middle of nowhere with your horse? You'll do like every other stranded and starving cowboy, pioneer, and explorer ever has and eat the damn animal. And these were people that lived in a world where foraging was possible without poisoning yourself to death!

So that assumption? It ia a pretty well thought out, educated, extrapolation by many different people.

Cats appeared nowhere in FO1 and FO2 except as images on one magazine, and in sad stories of them being eaten because they were easy to catch. As far as we know at this time, cats are extinct in the Fallout universe. So, yes, hallucinations. Sadly.

You are thinking of sick as a dog and you are thinking of domesticated horses. Wild horses are very sturdy creatures that are also native to Nevada. Just because they couldn't survive an ice age doesn't mean anything. If dogs could survive horses can. Like I said, I don't care if they are in or not, just don't attack me on a subject you don't know about.

edit: sorry I thought you were talking to me

Here's a link to the http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Keeng_Ra%27at page.... The pic there is pretty much the same as the biggest rats in the original games.

I just find it odd that the Vault talks about the Giant smart Mole Rats like Keeng and Brain but there is no mention or picture of the common giant mole rats I run into all the time that attack me in FO2 or even the ones people farm.

I don't want to see horses, they were too difficult to ride in Oblivion, and they won't be as good as the horses in Red Dead Redemption.

A couple of problems with your logic:

1. Your article and argument are based on what Early humans did to horses before we learned how to ride and domesticate them. Certainly I could not agree more that early man would have eaten horses and anything else that moved, but that is not the case in a post apocalyptic world in which man knew very well how to use horses and what the value was. This part of the argument is thus not valid to the Fallout time-frame.

2. Throughout the civilized history of our race (post horse domestication, circa 3000 BC and forward), human beings valued horses more than people in most cases, horses were treated with extreme care and had great value because of how fast people could travel with them and because of their value in war. History is full of examples of how great sacrifices were made for horse care (including over-seas voyages) so that they could have mounts on expeditions and in warfare.

3. I absolutely agree that many humans (raiders and ghouls) would treat horses as food in many cases, and certainly many horses fell victim to hungry creatures. However this is a far-cry from saying they would be completely wiped out, and those humans who keep horses and rode them would not so easily give up their mounts as food, and given there high value it is unlikely that they would All be destroyed.

4. Your argument that horses are fragile is invalid, I own horses and know better. They are no more or less fragile than humans are, I would argue that they are actually much more hardy than we are and can survive temperatures and exposure that we never could. A grass/grain diet is one of the few that would still be viable in a post-apocalypitc world, and they can outrun just about anything. We could argue this point all day, and I would argue for their sturdiness.

Now this entire argument is pointless because Obsidian chose not to add horses into the game. :) From a realism point however, your right I like horses and know enough about them and about human history to presume that they would have survived - IMHO. ;)

I always thought it a bit weird that there was no "Noahs Ark" type vault (nevermind whether the animals inside had survived or not in game). Surely if you build to safeguard humans you would do so for their potential resources? But then I've only played FO:3 and that might have been discussed in other games somewhere. I know it's already been debunked, but even if they did turn up it wouldn't bother me - if they played awful I just wouldn't use them.

There are 122 Vaults and only a small amount are known. 26 Vaults, 28 if you include the demonstration Vault in LA and Vault 6 from the cancelled FO extreme. Chances are there is such a vault somewhere. Maybe there are vaults that aren't apart of project safehouse. The Jungle Vault in FO New Vegas could be such a vault.
