My 2 cents

I agree 100%, Tank7. Bethesda's use of Gamebryo has been extremely buggy since it was Morrowind and Netimmerse, and it's only gotten worse since then. Morrowind is the first game I remember playing on a console that would reliably crash within a few hours. Before that, I didn't think such a thing was possible.

However, after all these years of struggling with it, I won't be buying another Bethesda Gamebryo game. I think in terms of pure design, New Vegas is the best thing Bethesda's released since Morrowind (and Bethesda didn't even develop it!); but the problems are unforgivable and I'm sick of dealing with such a crappy engine, especially when the bugs only get worse with each new game.

No problem, Layman ;)

There is one thing I do not udnerstand: How do you know so much about the game, when you label it as "unplayable" and put it in the list of games that you cannot play? You must have already put a decent amount of hours into Fallout New Vegas, since you have already been in New Vegas??

Another thing is that I believe you are overestimating the amount of people who are experiencing problems compared to people who are playing the game just fine. Unless you have some statistics of the percent of all sold games that are in the hands of PC players, who are experiencing serious problems, I could just as well claim that most people play this game fine, and it is only a very small minority of people who are experiencing problems.

I think there is something here you need to understand. There exists billions of different configurations out there that all have different ways of interacting with the game. That is why I say it is unrealistic to think that they will test each and every configuration. And if you think about it, this problem grows each and every day (ie. the number of different unique configurations grows).

I really like the "buggiest game this year/decade/ever" label. I think I have read that label to be put on each and every major game I have followed ever since the release of the first Splinter Cell game.

In this day and age, you should expect that each game released for PC needs some kind of tweaking from your side. That is just how the life is for us PC-gamers. If you don't like this, you might want to start playing Wii games - they are always flawless and without any bugs.

With regards to the game engine, I see no problem in them using it for new games also. I really do not care if the game engine is old or new, as long as the game (and the gameplay) is fun and as I said, I believe that most players do not experience problems with the Gamebryo engine. You say I can verify for myself that Bethesda/Obsidian know of all the problems with the engine - can you please point me in a direction where I can verify that?

Do you honestly believe that by developing a completely new and very advanced platform, that has never been out in "real life" testing would mean less bugs/problems??

But again - if you really want to play the game, I urge you to post your DXdiag in the support forum, and there might be someone there that can help you.

O. K Acolyte, I certainly didn't mean to offend you or hurt your feelings, you can believe what you want. I am just trying to bring forth info on the common issues of gamebryo in all of it's games, and the admitted fact (by them) that is was rushed.
To let you know I have logged 42 hours from 12 midnight on the 19th through Steam, the moment it became active. So yes I've played and struggled and been frustrated with it. I have told you the truth.
And you think I'm overestimating, ok. Or you can look yourself, if you really want I can do it for you. But I have the feeling your mind is made up, sounding a little butt hurt.
The buggiest game title comes from reviews not me, and I don't see the other games labled that, unless it's cities xl with super mem. leaks. If you have read that as you say with every other game I have missed it.
As far as wii goes, get real, xbox and playstation are totally controlled platforms and they are having huge issues issues. Read before you explode and make a mess. I just point out that if you look and actually go over the history of this engine and it's games it is IMPOSSIBLE to miss. Or you can kill the bearer of bad news just because YOU don't like it
It's easy just to right off everybody else, like the guys commenting below this, and think we're all nuts, OK. with me.
I wouldn't care about it's age either if it wasn't so problematic, It's been pushed to far, I mentioned reading tech reports from tekkies or pro's that evaluate these engines professionally and work on them. They talk about all the technical pro's and cons. It's their job.
Now if you really want me to get some for you I will do it.
And gamebryo is not a completely new and advanced platform, you must be referring to New Vegas coding on gamebryo, and if you listen to interviews from the head designer of fallout 3 and others they talk about how easy it is to make quest and all that stuff on gamebryo, don't make it sound like going to the moon! Thats why they like it, it's fast and easy = saves a lot of money. I am not here to argue with you or anyone. People can believe what they WANT and usually do, OR they can be objective and evaluate this themselves.
I'm sorry but you sound hurt and like your just taking up for a team because you like it. I like it too, just wish it would work better, a lot better.
For goodness sake don't you go around the internet and read this stuff, or have you convinced yourself that everyone that actually does have problems are jerks with nothing better to do. All these people in Steam, and on the internet everywhere, and in gaming mags and sites, are just out to get Bethesda?
Now thats a conspiracy for sure.. Sorry Acolyte you sound like an apologist for your fave , blame everyone else, ok.
Have a heart, I am on the side of the people getting the short end, and trying to inform people if they don't already know, and for Bethesda to do better, for all of us.
SORRY

It really is time to let go of this dated engine. Just read up online for all the proof you need. This engine is notoriously buggy. This from someone who has always been able to play Morrowind, (Netimmerse then.) Oblivion, Fallout 3 and NV. Sure I had to tweak things and apply community fixes but they always work.....why? Because it's the same outdated, broken engine underneath.

Don't get me wrong, if the next TES/Fallout game is on this engine it will not stop me from buying the game, though I would be a little disappointed with their decision. (As in: "They should know better by now".)

I'd just love to see what they could do with these games on a modern well optimized engine. *Lights blown using imagination*

Thanks for the reply, and I tell people to read up on it but a lot just want to believe what they want instead of looking. I agree totally and have tweaked Oblivion a lot from the community, usually tnexus. Look at all the fixes made over the years for these games on this engine, it's amazing that people do this and Beth. doesn't. Already a total patch out. I love the games too and would love to see them on a really good engine, and it is coming, maybe next year ! Have a good one.

You could also see it from the bright side: By using the old engine the community very quickly find fixes to most engine related problems. :)

Maybe Bethesda counts on that to save money. IT'S AMAZING, good point.

I agree with pretty much all of you posts...

But I keep asking myself this question:
Why is it that I can go to a store and buy any number of games,
install them on my PC, and play for 10-15 straight hours each time
I play them with only a very minor glitch here or there????

I've already finished both Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2,
which are a couple of my favorite games and I have had little to
no trouble playing them in all those hours of gameplay....???

With FONV it took me almost 2 hours just to install the game
because of all the problems with steam, then once I finally got the
game installed it wouldn't run at all and instantly CTD, finally
after troubleshooting for days I can now run the game with
only a rare CTD in which I lose progress and in which forces
me to CAD and end task...

Then I can reload and keep going... but I haven't got that
far in the game yet so I don't know if I'm going to be getting
the infamous "save game corruption" problems that others
are having and I've read about here in the forums...

Say what you will, but that's not a good track record for a
game I've only played a few hours and still have a long
way to go to finish...

Keep in mind, I can run these other games for a whole
day without a single problem... know what I mean???

just my 2.5 cents...

M

You are totally right and on the money! I pointed that out too and it's obvious.
I have been doing civ 4 and 5 and started noticing how when you move the camera it stutters just like the games we're talking about and sometimes ctd's, not as bad as the others though.
So I went to the forum just to see what kinds of issues people had , and it all sounded like gambryo problems, Sure enough I checked and it's on Gambryo. wow another one !

To be honest I did not read your last posts - too little time right now, but I did wonder why you still have not posted you dxdiag on order for someone to maybe help you with your problem?

Thanks, and I know what you mean ! I am just trying to shine light on this and help in some way all the people who are having problems, by focusing on the real issue, Brokenbryo. I read all over the place, and the ones that touched me the most were from young kids crying out for some one to help them, you could tell their desperation and wanting to play this game so bad. Others just seem to want to blame us just for talking about it - jeeeze. And you are totally right it has gotten worse. I am not against Bethesda like some people might think I am, corporations have to make money and I understand, these games cost, but sometimes with all the different interest involved things get murky, STILL, they have had a lot of experience and time with this and thats why it's time more people stand up. And there is no good reason to rush to market such a shoddy product. But fact is, as long as they are bringing in the dough they will continue, and use their pr machine to counter and blow smoke. To me that shows no respect for us !
Watch out for the cheerleaders that think they're on the Bethesda payroll, they're actually hurting the situation by blaming it on everyone else and their computers, just adding more confusion to the issue instead of actually looking and learning.
And there in every forum doing the same thing, they hear someone say something they think is smart and just repeat the same crap over and over. I have been reluctant to get involved in a forum for just that reason, like above, check it out, rude and crude, just above this.
Back to the top what you said, it looks to me that if the game played right it would really be a good one, I can only hope that the community will fix it because Bethesda/ Obs. might patch a couple of times but based on past experience they will never fix it.
Thanks again !

Tank, the "wall of text" they are talking about is your posts. Put spaces between some lines, like this.

See the space? Not
like this example
where everything
becomes a wall.

As for my experiences, I'm on WinXP 32 on a solid and fast rig. I can play anything smoothly. Also, I built this rig myself less than a year ago, so it's fresh and new. Since installing Steam and FNV, I've had crashes (of course), but also hard drive thrashing, a corrupt system file, and slow performance.

Yes, I scan everyday, so i don't think it is malware or a virus. Naturally, it could be--or any number of other problems. But the big coincidence is that I just started having trouble with this FNV/Steam mess.

If I knew more about diagnostics, maybe I could find out. I've played through FNV once without a major stopper (I had crashes, weird sound sync, and other "normal" problems), and I'm going to try it again -- but first, I'm going to back up my hard drive.
