backpacks...

Well I'm sure your school bag isn't filled with metal guns, knives, and bullets that clang around. And if you take issue with the noise idea than just have it cause (-1) agility because it's so big it makes us a bigger target to spot?

Edit: And add what Robotoh just said into this post too since it applies to me as well. I want backpacks too, I never said "no way they make too much noise".

Actually I sell antiques. I do have metal knives and old machinery in my school bag. It makes a little noise, but idk dude. I have to walk all my stuff to the Antiques Dealer, it's like 2 miles up the road from my house. Granted, I've never bought or sold guns. But, meat cleavers, knives, a crow bar, hand scythe, a few cogs, a sprocket, and some 1920's door hinges. When I carry too much, I use my C-Bag, and it DOES make a lot of noise.

If your concerned about noise... http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:7sQSMefsdz1tJM:http://www.ephotozine.com/articles/Lowepro-backpack-for-travel-4292/images/lowepro-StealthSM.jpg&t=1

Yeah..but when I picture the type of backpack that would be in FO:NV I picture one of those big, soldier type packs made of tan khaki fabric or something similar. Something that can really haul.

Exactly, when you need to carry something that's a "post-apocalyptic survival" size load you wouldn't be using some fancy snug brand new bag. Right???

You could always get some webbing, holsters, and semi-rigid bandoleers to fix that.

A Ruck Sack, or C-Bag. Rucksacks are the ones that are like regular backpacks with a lot of pockets. C-Bags are the ones that are like giant green duffelbags.

My school bag is like 10ish years old. It's really not very new in any way. :^P

But how readily available would those be? I mean I could walk into 'Springvale Elementary' and find schoolbags in Fallout Universe.

Ah, a rucksack. That's the name thanks. I mean not "brand new" as in it could be up to 200 years old..unless people started making their own I suppose.

Yeah those Blackwolf packs look like just about what I'm picturing.

You can buy them in Craterside Supply and a few other places. There's also a stash in a Talon Co. hideout.

I see what you're saying though, if food can withstand an atomic holocaust and 200+ years, you'd think that there would be some backpacks lying around. Their version of uber Science! Nylon if nothing else.

As far as I know no one ever modded anything like that though. I could be wrong, I haven't been paying much attention since the beginning of the year, and I was on an Oblivion kick at the time.

Since my post was apparently taken as offensive, I'll try to elaborate...
How would they even work? They free up your hands but they still weigh a ton so I don't see what benefit it would have in-game. I think they'd look cool, especially if I had a hermit character again. Maybe they could (for some reason) allow you to carry more weight but just make more noise so it's harder to sneak?

-Why should we take a negative hit from something that should make sense. You are taking real world logic "backpacks would make noise, and thus they should make sneaking around harder" and comparing it with "magic". Having a backpack in the game would make the idea of carrying a ton of supplies logical, but that should not come with some horrible side effect for realism's sake, unless it was an option to the player to take it or leave it, but that raises the problem of only being able to carry a max of like 8 items without a backpack, and that wouldn't be fun, so the backpack (if there was no pipboy) would be a must have to almost everyone, and making everyone take a negative hit because it's an element of the game would be stupid.

Having a big bulky bag of gear on your back would just make even more. Basically it's like an agility (-1).

-As opposed to the magic pipboy? or carrying all your gear by hand? why should we get -1 agi or something like that when the alternative is to solve the problem with magic and say no negative effects are found.

Huh? What "lulz pipboy black hole!" approach? Making noise in FO3 was a factor, that's why we walked slowly when sneaking. That's why I said noise could be a trait of the backpack.

-Yes, making noise in FO3 was a factor of stealth, but when you take situation A (magic pipboy = no negative effect on stealth) and compare it to B (a backpack to carry our gear, which makes sense, and then penalizing the player for having a logical way to carry supplies.) is a bad design move, because the previous "fix" for carrying gear was "magic".

-I get that you both want backpacks and I'm trying to argue with your "there should be a negative side effect associated with the backpacks" point.

---

Uhh. So I was agreeing with you, genius. I'm saying backpacks would be a good idea, but they would still have certain drawbacks. I never once said that a blackhole pipboy is a better alternative.

-You're saying that having a backpack added should have a negative effect on the character in-game when it should not, because the prior solution was a "magic" pipboy (with no negative side effects), if anything there should be backpacks and they shouldn't be louder and make it harder to sneak, and they shouldn't weigh a great deal, because it's a logical solution, if you had a backpack and it was full of guns/knives/and bullets, SURE it would make noise and make it harder to seak around IRL, but when the alternative is a Magic device that stores all your gear in your wrist, we should not be penalized for having a realistic approach.

But how readily available would those be? I mean I could walk into 'Springvale Elementary' and find schoolbags in Fallout Universe.

-I always wished there was a schoolyard backpack there :foodndrink:

Edit:Sorry for thinking you didn't want a backpack because of the noise variable. read that part wrong.

Oh my gawd some of the people around here...

Backpacks would be cool. I don't understand why anyone wouldn't want them?
And even if you didn't want one I'm sure it would be an option, so you wouldn't HAVE to pick one up.

And the whole, simply [censored], argument that claims "a backpack adds weight so it should reduce your overall carrry weight". OMG I can tell most of you have never been on a backpacking trip IRL.

It's the DISTRA-FRUCKING-BUTION that matters. Try carrying 100 lbs of junk/survival gear in your hands, then try stuffing it in a pack and strapping it to your back.

backpacks would be awesome. theyed be limited to how much they can hold. theyd make noise. they could break and they could be used offensivly (proxcimity mine and a curiouse npc) to set traps. also u could take um off and lose any hinderance such as speed loss due 2 weight or noise factor. also u lose them if u forgot where u put it. but it would take us better prepare for what quest were going on and more selective as to what we loot.hell they might enable us to rent or own a caravan enhanceing the rwalism of maneging our charaters in the wasteland. also i think it would open up other pip boy options such as haveing to find or buy one, n if they can be bought then there would be differnt kinds to buy. such as a streanth boost pip boy to enable us to carry more. or a recon pip/stealth boy. i could go on all day so im going to end with this. bookbags open up [censored] tons of possabilitys as well as make the played not only more selective but more realistic which could lead to new sub classes or even better multiclasses.

If anyone here has ever played D&D (yes I'm a nerd :P ) you'll know that your character obviously uses a bag of holding.

I didn't think your post was offensive, I just didn't understand it and it sounded like you thought I was against backpacks.
I was under the impression that the backpack idea was always going to be optional, and I added a drawback to them so they wouldn't be overpowered and so that people who didn't like them would have something to support their decision not to wear them. Kinda like power armor.

It was just a suggestion, I'm not saying that's how they should be. I just decided to throw it out there so that other people might read it and post their own ideas on how they would want them to work.

So a back pack weights 10 pounds .... and now you have lost 10 pounds of your carrying capacity!!?? :nono:

Unless it a Bag of Holding .. ah, that works ... but that's another game and another time ...

i dont know what kind of backpack you carry around, but iv never had a backpack that weight 10lbs.... unless it had 10lbs of gear

lets face it, it doesn't make sense that you would leave the vault (or Docs shop) and struggle to carry everything. You would look for a bag, a backpack, a shopping trolly, a brahmin, a wagon, anything that would help you out. Which is why I bought a large Blackwolf backpack from Moria (when I could afford one!) and later (different mod) I bought my own pack brahmin. Didn't break immersion in the slightest, just added to it. Because, if it WAS me, that is what I would do.

imo the game should limit you, 3 guns max or something, then you would need backpacks, army bags, etc to be able to carry more. Hitting up a perk to make you stronger is the thing that doesn't make sense to me.
