Dubious game design (Mob HP's and weapons)

I don't see a problem with those things you found early game.

You can spec into Energy Weapons from the start of the game, so they should have some availability that early.

Really, you should think of it like a faux Either Or situation; either you're into bullets or you're into zaps.

Me, I'm spec'd for both, and it's overkill, but I love variety.

It's not all bleak, guys. I'm not giving the game a 0/10 review. I'm just saying, it's not progressed in a meaningful way. In fact, it's carried with it the flaws from FO3, and not brought a whole lot to the table. I remember the annoying eh.. Mutant overlords? The big ones. Not the biggest giants, but the big ones. It was nonsense. You just unloaded endlessly at them... What is this, the mid 90s? Has the industry completely run out of gameplay ideas?

seriously????
How do u expect the game to be to make it better? expect them to die faster so u can be complaining its to easy? or do u want them to change the whole f'ing game mechanics just cause you dont like it? its no different then any other FPS out there. you JUST SHOOT! what do u expect to have to do?

The only thing I have a problem on is the incinerator you find on the convict leader. 1 hit most low level baddies for a nice assortment of caps even though my energy weapons is 15.

In FO3, I had a suit of combat armor, a Chinese assault rifle and power armor that I couldn't wear yet within five minutes.

F:NV handles getting the better equipment later on much better.

1) I've played the game for 1 hour, and I already have:

*Flamethrower
*Laser pistol
*Laser rifle
*40-50 dynamite sticks

What the hell is this? Every game ever made has had a logical progression in weapons. Who rolls a D&D character with a sword of sharpness on the sheet before you even start? What kind of game gives you these weapons so early on? It's very poor game design.

I don't see the problem.

1: The flamethrower is quite weak early-on, and ammo is quite hard to find. I didn't start running into a regular supply of the stuff until halfway through the game.
2. Laser Pistol is pathetically underpowered. You can't even easily kill a bloatfly with it. Plus, ammo is highly scarce.
3. Same problems as with the pistol. Energy weapons seem to rely on crits to be effective this time around. High crit chance? High destruction. No crit chance? Useless.
4. Again they're useless early on. They do very little damage. Explosives in this game are something you need to plan for if you want them to be devastating.

2) Mob difficulty is based on two parameters: Their damage output & their hitpoints.

This is SERIOUSLY poor game design, and very much lacking in innovation and shows a complete lack of ideas by the game creators.

I just met my first rad scorpion. The fight consists of backing up (you move _exactly_ as quickly as the mob), and shooting it 100 times in the head. How is this intelligent game design? What's entertaining about this?

I met another scorpion.. The exact same method was required, because you cannot drop these creatures with a 9mm pistol or a varmint rifle before they reach you.

You honestly expect a 9MM Parabellum to go through the carapace of a scorpion the size of a small hatchback?! If one of these things existed in real life you'd still need a pretty high caliber rifle to take one down. The carapace would laugh off most pistol rounds, and some rifle rounds. That dinky little .223? It ain't got enough powder. It will either embed harmlessly in the carapace, or it will just bounce right off. There just isn't enough mass behind it to punch through, and even if it did it's such a tiny little round it won't do any damage once it gets inside.

If you're taking on something that size, think of what you would want to use if you were trying to take out a bull elephant in real life. Would you reach for your Beretta or your M82?
