Everybody so open to Homosixuality

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 12:23 pm

This argument is automatically debunked due to the fact that ghouls are discriminated against.

Besides, wouldn't prejudice be at its HIGHEST when someone is concerned with survival? A person's instincts tell them who to trust, and as man naturally behaves, they will hate those who are different. Couple this with poor or lack of education as well as general ignorance to much of the world, it seems comical how the Mojave is some giant politically correct wonderland.

You get that type of distrust between factions instead - people in their survival mode have banded together (whatever race, sixual orientation, whatevs) and so distrust other outside of their communities. like I said earlier, stigma and distrust are there, it's just moved on to other avenues.

Goodness, homosixuality is pretty open these days and I find little odd or shameful about it. Last time I was in New Vegas some chick hit on me pretty openly in front of my hubby. Heck, last time I went to the lodge up here there was a couple of women smooching at the bar. It's a less judgmental world than it used to be. Hello...it's 2010 and a live and let live world today.

Stop confusing cultural indoctrination with instinct.

Curiously, you have this backwards. Bronze age societies not only tolerated but in some cases ENCOURAGED homosixuality. This is one reason the Legion is the way they are: they're emulated the ancient Romans. See also just about every Greek city-state ever.

And I never said there was no discrimination, just no (strong) discrimination based on sixual preference.

EDIT:

The guy is annoying for the fact that he would hit on me every minute

You're seriously gonna have to qualify this, as no-one else has seen/heard something similar.

I've lived in Los Angeles for the last 20 years and I don't agree with this statement. Sure, if you go to west LA you will find homosixual couples walking the street... But they are all in one concentrated area. As soon as you drive over a one mile radius then you don't seen that blatant homosixuality.

The way they did Arcade is cool, he is more realistic because he isn't so open about it. Or the homosixual prosttute in westside. But the others in the game, get a swift shotgun to the face.

I've seen very openly homosixuals in San Fernando, Monterey, Pasadena, Burbank, Long Beach, Beverly Hills, just about everywhere but Compton has areas with high homosixual populations. Perhaps it just doesn't really jump out to you but they're there. Granted they are more concentrated in communities in West LA.

The wiki mentions that he calls male couriers "my little buttercup."

Of course, this obsession with one NPC hitting on him is kind of funny. Yeah, he's annoying. So what?

I heard that the buttercup thing was only if you have Confirmed Bachelor.

Edit: I never take the perk and I've never seen him call me that.

I'd guess people are not openly homophobic because nobody wants to get shot. Almost everyone in the wasteland is armed out of necessity. Making enemies doesn't help your chances of surviving.

The only people I would expect to be openly oppressive is the Legion, and they are towards women. They aren't towards homosixuals but really that isn't that weird either considering the society the Legion is based off is one where homosixuality was considered pretty normal.

Are you going to start a thread complaining about how too many people are open about being Grannies? And that you think people instinctively fear Grannies, so it doesn't make sense that they're not all hiding it?

Why are you taking obvious satire so seriously?

You all need to watch your posting content in this topic, I have already deleted posts.

Better idea - be moderatorphobic before you post.

Because satire is, by definition, fairly serious. Even if not in tone, but in subject. It's a form of derision, not jest.

People in the wasteland have probably learned to appreciate everybody just for who they are. Ghouls, mutants, gays, etc.

...almost makes me wish for a nuclear winter, am I right?

Like Ralph in Freeside says "A polite society is an armed society"

It just goes to show that Obsidian is openly homosixual. That's why there's so much of it in their fantasy land.

hmm... the gay characters in NV don't bother me, but this thread does. It's one step away from "the sheriff of Megaton is black! omg! how unrealistic is that! shock!".

Because homosixuality is akin to racial profiling/discrimination. And effects the same number of people as racial bigotry. Yes. [/sarcasm]

My understanding is that, culturally, the US in the Fallout universe never evolved past the 1950s. If I'm wrong, please let me know as I'm fairly new to Fallout (FO3 was my first foray into it.)

With that in mind, homosixuality shouldn't be something that's terribly open in all places in the Fallout world. With some notable exceptions (Gomorrah ... well, really, it's a [censored]house. What do you expect. The Strip is something along the same lines) I believe that having the 1950s mentality towards it (and some other things as well) wouldn't be out of character for the world. Or at least have someone in the game be as homophobic as some people are ghoul-phobic or anti-female.

I didn't see the OP as a homophobe (which is a misnomer anyway but that's a different discussion) but more as a gamer taking the time to give his opinion about a facet of the game which he found annoying.

That being said, we live in a Politically Correct world so the developers decided to be PC on this particular issue (while being completely non-PC about many others ... odd). Look at this thread as a perfect example, one guy comes in posting his thoughts on the homosixuality in the game and suddenly he's a homophobic bigot. Yet the game discriminates against ghouls in the manner that the quoted message above talks about but that's fine. Or how the Legion is militantly sixist against women. Really, people? Pathetic. The game environment isn't politically correct and it makes perfect sense within the confines of the world ... why should this ONE issue be PC in the game? I'd rather see it be believable for the worldview that they've built in the game ... not compromised simply to make people who're overly PC be less inflamed by it.

World believable within the confines of itself > politically correct, IMO.

I didn't see the OP as a homophobe (which is a misnomer anyway but that's a different discussion) but more as a gamer taking the time to give his opinion about a facet of the game which he found annoying.

That being said, there's been a fair amount of comments that haven't been appropriate for this forum. We're going to go ahead and shut this thread down for now.
