Why ?

I've been over to the west side of the map, in my opinion it's great for death valley, I'd like to see it become a huge expance of desert complete with dunes, add some settlements at the extreme edges, drop some random stuff in the middle of it, random severe sand storms and so on, but generally keep it baron.

I can just imagine having a character trying to cross it, do they have enough water, will the food last out, the burning sun during the day, the freezing cold temperatures at night.

As a modder I agree, but I do not forget they are not obligated, just as they are not obligted to take NVSE into account when patching,

I don't really care how something looks in real life when I'm playing a game. In real life it would take you hours/days of walking through an empty dessert to get to certain locations and I wouldn't be very pleased if it did so in FNV. If developers left large portions of the map empty just beacuse it is so in real Mojave then I'm about to have as much fun as I would if I was walking the real Mojave, which is none.

Besdies, the game takes places some 250 years in the future, so its not like developers can't use their imagination to design Mojave their own way.

250 years after a global thermonuklear war a desert will most likely still be a desert. i say the developers will leave it either empty and work with areas way outside the actual map (like they did with the dlcs for fallout 3 except broken steel) or they'll have a really hard time filling an area this big with interesting and believeable landmarks while having NOTHING pre war to work with, this would be the very first time bethesda did something like this in the 2 games +dlcs they made.

I hear what you are saying, I'm already modding in one of those areas, it's a risk.

The map is deceiving. It is taller that it is wide, and not a perfect square. Just because the map at a first glance looks the exact same size and Fallout 3, it isn't. The game world is about the same size. As for the DLC, I would prefer all of the blocked up areas in the game were just multiple gateways to farther off locations in the west. I like traveling to places outside of the regular map.

The world map is larger than the Fallout 3 map, it's just reduced to the same scale in your Pip-Boy map, which is why it looks the same.

To quote Mr. Sawyer:

The 2D borders around the Mojave Wasteland world map do not have any relationship to the size of the game world relative to F3's Capital Wasteland. The Mojave Wasteland is not a perfect square. It is taller than it is wide and the boundaries are mostly defined by natural features: the Spring Mountains, Colorado River, etc.

The approximate size of the Mojave Wasteland is 60-65 tiles tall by 40-45 tiles wide, tallest around Nellis AFB, widest around Jacobstown. The size of the Capital Wasteland is 51 tiles by 51 tiles. If anyone wants to open the GECK and load WastelandNV, you can see its exact size.

—J.E. Sawyer

So, instead of the "you can't go any further" messages that plagued Oblivion and Fallout 3, Obsidian decided to use the Mojave's natural borders instead.

I'm of two minds on this. On one hand I'd love for there to be more stuff all over the place, even if it's just to keep 10 of these threads from popping up every day. :P I'll admit it would be cool to have more random places. At the same time, FO3's game world felt artificially filled with "theme park rides" for the player to the point that it was a bit immersion-breaking for me. If they're going to have that much stuff they need to make the game world bigger. I think the feeling of desolation and emptiness is not only VERY appropriate for the area in which NV is set, but it also contributes to the wasteland-y feeling of the area. The Mojave Wasteland is soooo much more immersive to me...it just feels more like a real place.

Anyway, like I said, it would be neat to have more random places to explore, but (IMO) not if it's done the same way it was in FO3. NV's game world feels a lot more real and genuine to me. FO3's world felt a little forced and "plastic." Somewhere in-between would be good. I would not like to see the Mojave Wasteland simply filled with junk for the player to do in the same manner FO3 was. A lot of that stuff didn't make any sense to me and overall the wasteland wasn't convincing to me. If they're going to add a lot more stuff I just hope it's sensible and they put a lot of thought into it beforehand.

Wow.
I didn't realize the real Mojave desert had invisible and impenetrable walls on most of their mountains - or slopes even.

Every inpenetrable wall I've come across has been on a pretty damn tall mountain, so honestly, I don't see what you people are complaining about.

The walls just aren't realistic, man! Look, if I stroll up the side of a mountain on foot with no climbing gear I expect to be able to stroll all the way up to the top. You know...just like in real life.

Wow, in the TES forums Morrowind vs. Oblivion threads are rampant, even today. So are these the Fallout ones?

Yes exactly. If you stroll up a gentle slope in real life you will eventually stroll to the top. In NV you stroll into an invisible wall then flounder around trying to find another way up until you give up and walk back into Obsidian's designated fun zones. These walls aren't on just mountains either I've leapt at plenty of chest high walls after climbing a ledge only to hit a wall and fall back down.

I'm finding it really hard to believe that the walls are that large an affront to peoples' enjoyment of the game, though. FO3 didn't have any terrain features at all and they funneled you away from plot areas by other (equally un-immersive) means, so they didn't have to deal with this. I guess they (Obsidian) just should have set the game in a flat-featureless area and placed all of the important plot points inside places behind doors and loading screens like Bethesda did in FO3. To me it's six one way and a half-dozen the other. I prefer the varied terrain and larger world set pieces of the Mojave Wasteland, but to each his own. I'm not telling anyone they're wrong. I never really did much mountain climbing in FO3 or Oblivion anyway. It's not something that would be possible IRL, so I avoided it as part of my own role-playing.

I understand their affront though I'm not as intense about it, they just irritate me because one of the things I like to do is getting to high places, so I spot a slope(not a steep wall) and begin to climb, only to be stopped by what?, that's the problem, you see nothing blocking your path but you cannot continue on, it's not the fact invisible barriers are used, but the fact they are used in inappropriate places.

I get it...it's weird that you can't see why you can't keep climbing. It would be cool if they could have found a better way to do it. I'm just saying I don't get why there's so much rage about it.

Assuming there is any new content to come ;) (IIRC, they haven't announced any plans for DLC, have they?)

And, don't forget to tell Homer to tackle that guy....I think he's getting away.... :P

Change the invisible walls to the same effect you get when you're knocked down before you reach them. It could be like you lost your footing on the slope and fell down which is a realistic effect that you'd experience when you're trying to stroll up a sandy/rocky slope while you're carrying 200lbs of equipment.
