Why ?

Hey all,

I was messing around with the toggle noclip command at mojave outpost when i decided to go thru the gate. I noticed that there was an entire piece of map, just sitting empty, Why?
Didn't Obsidian have enough time to populate this piece of map or are they going to use this for DLC (for cheap money?) ? It just seems weird, and i posted a pic showing the portion of map which is not used...
All credits for the map itself go to colored at the new vegas nexus, I just edited the red line and stuff....

just seems weird, such a large portion not used....

Whether it feels shifty or not. I think alot of that barren land is there because they have the DLC already planned out where these places will go. Thats why if I was a modder, I'd be uncomfortable with the idea of using that land just yet.

I'm thinking that the closed off passages in the game will have something to do with any subsequent DLCs/expansions.

I'm not sure if you noticed, but theres a boarded up train tunnel door to the far south IIRC, perhaps this is also another DLC map?

They needed a barrier somewhere. And making a box around the map might not have been geographically reasonable. Is that mountain range actually there in the Mojave? A nice natural barrier would be useful.

There are already some mods filling the land with various stuff. Nothing too large or significant yet but the general feel is that those areas will eventually be filled with DLC. Lots of speculation and not alot of actual detail though. I think Bethesda will hold off on DLC until they have most of the glitches patched. After all, their DLC tends to be horribly glitched to begin with. Incorporating it into the direct land of an already glitchy game world would be a horrifically hilarious move on their part.

There are several areas that are closed off that could be opened up in the future. Mojave Outpost (just a gate, no), Northern Passage (rockfall), Canyon Wreckage (which has things like 'Courier 6' and 'Courier go home' written), and perhaps some more. Any of those could be targeted for future DLCs, no?

At the same time, this could be the case as well. It could just be some boundaries, and maybe nothing else is planned for some of these spots.

no...the ground, don't you think it's conceivable that there's a big stretch of flat nothing in a desert? Why does every inch of land much be pock marked with crap to do?

Just so you're clear, the actual playable area of the map is the same size, or larger, than the FO3 one.

Its imponrtant to note that as the game progressed they expanded the map one or more times along the way. oblivion has massive sections of unused land all around it. Most all these games do as its much easier to generate land then it is to fill it and tweak it.

LOL!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!? that is funny. Is that your final answer for a million dollars? I've made countless threads regarding the size of FNV comparing ot FO3 and as OP posted w. a image the whole western part isn't even there. The OP also didn't mention northern and eastern part of the map is relatively the same, aside from the legion's fort on the east.

FO3's sewer / subway system was so vast that it could easily match the entire size of FNV, not to mention FO3's world map was larger to begin with, and it didn't fake advertise a world map thats 30-40% unavailable.

So, your the one we have to blame for all these threads on the map.

As I have said in countless other threads on this issue. If you are playing the game, the map is more than big enough for that. If you are playing the map, then it is lacking, but that is not playing the game.

Jokes on you, a dev confirmed them to be the same size. And the sewer system? Really? Quality>Quantity. The sewers were the stupidest part of FO3.

Here:
The approximate size of the Mojave Wasteland is 60-65 tiles tall by 40-45 tiles wide, tallest around Nellis AFB, widest around Jacobstown. The size of the Capital Wasteland is 51 tiles by 51 tiles. If anyone wants to open the GECK and load WastelandNV, you can see its exact size.

You must be pretty disappointed with all the redundant map markers FNV has then.

Wow, that is so true. Fallout 3's wasteland was epic and beautifull, but I had to play off so many Sewers and caves, it was frustrating. Very dark and closed areas who are totaly ruined and full of monsters...Man that was a nightmare. I don't mind experiencing some sewers or cave at all, some of them were epic like the train ones, but wow half of the game was closed. I really hated it. :P

take a look at the ingame map of the new vegas wasteland - compare to a real world map of las vegas (google maps) = you'll see that all the towns u actually see in the game are found in the real world as well (even a solar powerplant in the place of helios 1). same thing about fallout 3. the inaccessible areas are completely empty in real life. since both bethesda games were (for most parts) orientated on real world towns my guess is that those areas will never be accessible since they are nothing but plain desert and mountains. the area is too big to spice it up with some imaginary places like the vaults or some buildings which are actually not thre in real life. there has NEVER been a major settlement in fallout 3 or fo:nv so far that hasen't some kind of connection to a real life settlement.

my guess: its not a placeholder but will actually stay closed for ever OR will be full of completely made up towns and places (which would stink)

ok,except megaton, but rivet city is an aircraft carrier in the harbor in the middle of the dc ruins which is quite explainable. at least 9 out of 10 fallout settlements are based on pre war towns. and if they filled all the empty space with post war settlements (remember it's a big area) it would just not feel like fallout. all desert and some post war shacks to fill it all? sounds unlikely to me

I don't really care how something looks in real life when I'm playing a game. In real life it would take you hours/days of walking through an empty dessert to get to certain locations and I wouldn't be very pleased if it did so in FNV. If developers left large portions of the map empty just beacuse it is so in real Mojave then I'm about to have as much fun as I would if I was walking the real Mojave, which is none.

Besdies, the game takes places some 250 years in the future, so its not like developers can't use their imagination to design Mojave their own way.
