"Unlock All" DLC?

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 4:08 pm

I know I was actually just thinking about this last night. I remember them talking about how you can transfer xp over to your other characters and it made me think would I really want to do that with my other character or level them up individually so I get accustomed to the body type and abilities of that role. By doing it that way by the time I get the the big dogs again I have figured out what abilities work the best for me personally and if it is a new body type how to best use it.

So I don't know if I will actually use that feature personally maybe if I am real close to the next level or something like that.

The XP transfer didn't make the final cut.

I got this cheap little action RPG off PSN called Dungeon Hunter. Classic hack n slash. . .very satisfying. Anyways, throughout the entire course of the game you have the option to reset your character at anytime, retaining your attribute and skill points. You have to pay gold of course but it sure would be nice to reset your FPS character and spend your XP where you want it.

I love BFBC2 but I hated it when they released a way to get all the guns with money. There's so few weapons anyway, yet people are still too lazy to actually play the game long enough to unlock al of them. Maybe in the future we will be able to acquire other pre-order packs as DLC but please Bethesda, do not sell gun packs with unlockable weapons in them.

I still don't see why not. I know I'm just going to play and get unlocks that way, because I'm cheap and I know I'm going to dump some time into Brink, so paying for full unlocks is a lose-lose for me...but if someone wants to buy a level 20 character...let them?

And the whole idea of "we played the game, we should have something to show for it to differentiate us from those who bought it..." I just don't understand it. Are people really that insecure? That they need something, in a video game, that tells them they earned something rather then bought it?

No one cares. Really. If you're playing a game at level 20, are you really going to be thinking, "Who on my team has bought weapons and who earned them?" No. You are just going to play the game. Because that's all it is; a game.

And to those that say this will just encourage people to buy it and start off at level 20, so everyone at level 20 will be bad, that idea has zero basis. You don't level up by your skill, but by time. Someone could be really bad and get to level 20, and someone really good might not like the whole RPG aspect and buy full weapon unlocks because they like having options, and they like their competitors to have options.

I know that after I get one character to level 20, its going to be a chore getting all my other characters from levels 1-5, where they can only learn universal abilities.

While I agree with the "its just a game, why care?" ideology to a degree, I still think that it cheapens the experience in the sense of creative expression. For example, you kill me in game and I notice that you are flossed out in some nice tattoos, headgear and gun camo, etc. . .then I look you up to find that you had to do some difficult challenges to attain those customization options. . .it deepens the gameplay experience and adds a layers of depth to the online MP element.

I wasn't arguing for the customization items quite so much as the weapons and abilities. Especially with the competitive community Brink will have, some people won't want to level up to unlock guns and abilities, and will just want to play, compete, and win.

And ItalianDevil... On the same note, getting a lot of the things you unlock during play is more about patience with the game than skill. When something is pure grind, like leveling up, and that's not what the game is meant to be about, the people who don't have time to spare should be given some way to bypass it. I'm happy if they pay for it, because paying money means you're putting something into the game to get through those levels, even if it isn't time.

And half the people doing that wouldn't learn anything from losing a few thousand games and reaching level 20 the "hard way." But you probably already knew that.

3 star challenges are all about skill since they are going to be hard as hell. You can't just beat something by playing it for hours, you have to be good enough to beat the challenge to get the weapon or attachments.

If I recall correctly, there are no unlocks for three-star challenges because they're built to be so hard that even the developers have trouble completing them. Instead, there are leaderboards.

I don't recall hearing that but until the game comes out I'll take you word for it. Still, I bet 2 start ones will provide at least some difficulty. Not insanely hard but not easy either.

I don't like unlocking (except maybe cosmetic stuff). I play the game for the game itself, not for the feeling of gaining power and ranking up. I'd like for everybody to start out with all abilities so that everyone is always on the same level.

The only good part for me about unlocking as that sometimes the level 1 vanilla matches are fun... like KZ2 beginner rooms when its just rifles and no spawn points, bots, etc.

I agree with you, tangolibe, but I think unlocking new weapons, gadgets, and especially abilities is a part of character development, alongside cosmetic choices.

Really...does it matter if they release full unlocks for a price or not? I hate saying this, but if you don't like it...don't get it. It doesn't affect you at all, and if other people want to do it, let them.

And it might be the opposite of casual players who would get this; in fact, it might be competitive players. Competitive players will not be playing at levels 1, 7, 14, or 18; they will most definitely be playing at level 20 every competitive game. Do you think these competitive players interested in the gameplay and shooting aspect of Brink will care about the RPG leveling system and level up their characters? No, not at all.

I see competitive games allowing players to make a temporary, one-game character at level 20 with all the weapons and abilities available, but if this is not possible, I could see competitive players purchasing this unlock all DLC.

And if a ton of casual players purchase this nonexistant DLC, let them. Who gives two rips?

I agree, I'm very competitive. I don't like losing. Don't care much about getting to level 70 or prestige. Just like to win. Why would this be a cheat (to some of you)? Do you send a trained solider into battle with an air soft gun till he ranks up, then gives him a M4?

It takes to long to get everything.

They've confirmed something like this will be in Brink.

You drop one level to reset.

So you get to level 20, then want to totally rebuild your character, you reset, drop to 19, and only have one level to regain to be back on top.

I really do not see the point in early unlocks, it spoils the playability of the game, the point in the game is to play towards something such as attachments, body types, weapons and challenges.
Hopefully SD won't do such a thing as it could spoil the multiplayer, who knows? :unsure2:

I'm personally against the idea of an "Unlock All" DLC.

In BFBC2, I worked hard to earn every weapon and item that I wanted, just as I would have in every other game. Also due to the fact that unlocks are based on level, and that you will not be able to unlock everything by max level, so it would be pretty unfair.

There's also a similar idea in Mass Effect 2, of re-attributing all your skill points at the cost of some resources. ^_^

Kinda irrelevant, but still. There ya go.

Yes I think that allowing new players to unlock everything at the start is poor idea, an idea driven by greed and supported by players who lack skill and respect for a game. However, proponents of the idea would argue that allowing new players to unlock everything at once will even the playing ground against veteran players who have access to better equipment. I would much rather work for each new unlockable, feeling that sense of accomplishment is what drives me to continue playing a game. BF:BC2's replayability was cut somewhat short due to being able to unlock everything too quickly (and of course no new DLC map packs). I believe with all of the customization options that Brink boasts will allow the game to have a long and healthy lifespan so long as those options are treated with respect i.e. the need to perform some specific task in order to unlock it.

Sorry, off-topic but, BF: BC2 did have new map packs, they were just free and downloaded automatically.
Anyway back on-topic. Most games with this type of DLC waited at least a year till releasing it.

its a cheat because they think that because they play more they deserve an advantage. Its not about pitting skill against skill for them.

I am sorry, but play time does not, and should not, be rewarded more than skill. You may parrot that "unlocks dont give an advantage" but the fact you guys are against it, prove otherwise or you wouldn't care.

First thing, we don't know what weapons are unlocked to start or how much we have to do to unlock them. If all the weapons are there to begin with and you just have to earn the XP to buy them then earn the XP. We've been told that "later weapons aren't better, just different" whatever that means. Personally, I don't care if they're all unlocked at the beginning or if they stagger and I have no problem with SD selling them early (as long as I can still unlock them), they're just guns with similar stats.

Abilities are unlocked as you develop your character; they are attached to character development and should remain attached to character development. You can play without them on even ground, so there's no reason to "sell levels". You can rank up fairly quickly and should want time to develop and test skill sets.

Outfits serve no benefit except distinguishing yourself from others and are considered "earned" rewards. Instead of a little emblem next to my name that says "I play too much" I get a nice shirt that you don't have. And I believe they're actually unlocked through challenges which are a game mode specifically there to "show off" so those items should not be "unlocked for money".

We know that at least some weapons and attachments will be unlocked through challenges, but most challenges have co-op, so if you're really stuck, you can work with a friend to unlock something you really want.

But the important thing is the "we don't know what weapons are unlocked to start" point.

If all the "best" stuff is available from the start, and the extras are less directly powerful, but are great situational weapons, that would be cool. If you're good, you can take a handicap that might turn around and win the fight, in the right conditions, but also might get you killed horribly because it's really not that good a weapon you're running around with.
