"Unlock All" DLC?

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 5:09 pm

After Battlefield:Bad Company 2 offered the player the option to pay 9.99 to unlock all weapons, perks, camo and attacks I was starting to expect every other game to do this. I am thinking BRINK developers have a little too much swagger to allow such a travesty to occur for BRINK. There was a time when in MW1, a gamer took pride in the infamous "golden cross" prestige emblem, knowing that the player in the lobby who owned that emblem earned with plain hard work and dedication to the game. With MW2, titles and emblems became a joke thanks to cage match servers. I hope that as I work hard to unlock all of the customization options and abilities that BRINK finally returns us to an FPS era where you cant hack or buy your way to fame. . .

Not being able to unlock things is extremely boring in a game with unlockables. I'd rather have to be a dedicated badass in order to get my unlockables rather than pay for them. Part of the fun of playing a game with unlockables is the anticipation you get when you have 100 XP left to unlock a gun within the next 20 seconds so that you can use it in the next match. Or when you need 10 headshot kills in one match to unlock an epic attachment or camo. One of the reasons I was so disappointed in Black Ops is you can just use CoD points to buy camo and emblems and titles. You didn't have to be badass getting headshots or killing enemies to get extra items. I'm really hoping Splash Damage doesn't allow me to work hard as hell to unlock items while some says "Hey I have $10 to spare*BAM* everything unlocked!" But I highly doubt they will do that with all the talk about balancing and what not.

The option to pay for all of the unlockables is such an odd concept.

"So I pay you guys $10 to get all of the stuff that I can unlock by playing the game that I initially bought from you for around $62? I can then use those items to play the game game and level up which would have unlocked those things anyway?

WHY YOU DO THIS?

Umm, Isnt that the point of thus "Game"?

I find as the same people above - It really seems (lazy) and some-what pointless, To just pay to unlock everything.

You bought the game to play it through several times - complete it in different variations/modes etc, So you will unlock everything anyways.

Makes it more "achieving" when you play to unlock things, working towards a goal for a reward so too speak.

There used to be a time when I embraced stuff like that, because I was a lazy gamer in my youth.

Now, I play games on Normal or Hard -- I memorize 30-hit combos -- I retry a challenge until I nail it, and I don't take the easy way out in terms of unlocks.

It's a pleasant reward to get for doing something cool, after all.

Progressing and unlocking things is part of the fun for me, so there's no way I'm going to pay precious money to bypass all of that. Some people play just for the actual gameplay though, and don't care about any of the details. Nothing wrong with that, really. For those people, I can see why some games offer things like that.

And some people are just lazy. But if the devs can get money from their laziness, I say go for it. It's a business, after all. :frog:

I think Skate 2 was the first game to offer the ability to "unlock all". . .since then BF:BC2 and few others have jumped on board. What I hope doesnt happen with BRINK is the only way you can unlock a certain something is for a specific scenario to play out. For example, in CoD: Black Ops, in order to get GHOST PRO you have to destroy an enemy turret, which means that your depending on another player to use that perk (which was rare) plus being in the right place at the right time. As long as all unlocks are all XP based I will be happy.

They're not all XP based. You unlock a bunch of stuff from doing the challenges, which are separate from the multiplayer. Still, it's nothing random and arbitrary like the CoD perks, so it's all good.

If you wanted to save time and money why would you even BUY a game in the first. Wouldn't it be better to simply rent games or use the Gamefly service.

The logic of a gamer who wants to play a game for months on end and would unlock these things anyway is why I am confused as to why you would want to pay extra for something you get anyway.

Of course for the gaming casual crowd it works out great. In fact here are other ideas:

1.) Tired of spending hours PLAYING an rpg? With the Movie Goer DLC you can just watch all the cutscenes including the ending!

2. Man, playing through an entire season in sports games is difficult, isn't it? Well with the A-Rod DLC Pack we'll have a trained professional play the game and you can watch! It's like watching an actual baseball game on television but paying to BE at the game.

the "unlock all dlc" is for the casual gamers, or even the people that jus rent games and want to get everything before they get rid of the game. personally the game industry is goin to fall apart eventually because of catering to the casual gamers... just go read any of koticks (head guy at activision) ideas on dlc.

Oh yeah, I've known and read some of Bobby Kotick's writings. You can tell he enjoys the idea of "bleeding every nickel" from his customers. I was surprised there wasn't any Horse Armor in the CoD franchise as of yet.

im not too surprise just because theyve found a really good spot with selling the dlc map packs for $15, theyre more focused on gettin the most money they can. i wont be surprise if they start selling weapon packs soon tho or maybe implementing their own subscription fees.

As a business I can understand that making sure they pay their bills and employees is their top priority. When it comes to giving their customers quality at a fair price I feel like they've not done all that they can.

As for the subscription plan, I believe some time ago there was talk about something like that but it never got past the board room and it was a terrible idea anyway.

eventually playstation network will require a yearly fee but until then it leaves room for CEO's to dream up ways to make money. I would not be surprised to see a "online pass" requirement for PSN users in the future. You see them in the new Mortal Kombat and other games that if you were to buy the game used you have to pay for the pass.

For me, If I can unlock something by playing the game, I'm not willing to pay for it.

it may be something AWESOME, it may be something I'm honestly NOT skilled enough to unlock.

But I'm CHEAP - If there's a way to get something free, I refuse to pay for it.

In the context of a game with a level-up system, I don't normally mind someone paying for something which does this, though. For some people, starting with all the unlocks is basically an equaliser to level the playing field - particularly in online games.

Imagine a game with a level system like Brink has. Now imagine that the reward for reaching level 15 is a super-gun that's basically a rapid-fire rocket launcher that can 3-shot-kill the most damage-resistant enemies in the game without upgrades. Now imagine, also, that at level 20, you unlock a special universal ability that you can activate at any time to gain 30 seconds of invulnerability. And finally, this game wouldn't have the rank-based matchmaking of Brink, so your level 20 invulnerable rocket-wielding madman could be playing against a first-time player with NO upgrades.

In that type of situation (which is only slightly exaggerated from the reality of some online games), I think it's fair to give players some way to dull the edge of that.

Of course, I also disagree with Endwar taking the opposite approach of releasing totally game-breaking DLC and requiring people to pay for it - The basic rule is, Gunships ALWAYS beat Tanks. So they release a DLC that mounts AA guns onto one faction's tanks. Suddenly that faction becomes all-powerful, and the developers are sitting there WONDERING WHY... It's not hard to figure out that when you DIRECTLY AND OBVIOUSLY BREAK YOUR GAME, it turns out broken... One of many reasons why I stopped playing Endwar...

Really...does it matter if they release full unlocks for a price or not? I hate saying this, but if you don't like it...don't get it. It doesn't affect you at all, and if other people want to do it, let them.

And it might be the opposite of casual players who would get this; in fact, it might be competitive players. Competitive players will not be playing at levels 1, 7, 14, or 18; they will most definitely be playing at level 20 every competitive game. Do you think these competitive players interested in the gameplay and shooting aspect of Brink will care about the RPG leveling system and level up their characters? No, not at all.

I see competitive games allowing players to make a temporary, one-game character at level 20 with all the weapons and abilities available, but if this is not possible, I could see competitive players purchasing this unlock all DLC.

And if a ton of casual players purchase this nonexistant DLC, let them. Who gives two rips?

Yeah, I understand the business idea behind the Online pass since they are losing out on extra money that retailers like Gamestop get through the trade-in and resale deal. Understanding and liking though are two different things.

By that reasoning, what's the point of playing once you've unlocked everything?

This is a real problem today. People don't judge a game's multiplayer on whether or not its fun; they judge the multiplayer on how many unlocks they have from the start. Developers are using Skinner's methods to attract video gamers; give players a reward for completing an action, no matter how insignificant, and you'll have them hooked. The whole point of video games are to be fun. I see the gameplay as fun, but too many people think the reward system as fun, and once they've unlocked everything, they quit.

Ok I see your perspective but with a game like BRINK, that is based on heavy customization and XP, dont you think it would be amazing to unlock a difficult face paint and outfit to go along with your cold as ice SMG with a beer can silencer, being admired by those who dont possess it? Its good stuff man! Why cheapen the experience by allowing others to simply buy it? It takes away from the experience and I think it insults the gamer who puts a lot of hours into the game.
