Comparing BF3's graphics with those in Rage can be difficult since they are completely different games. BF3 tries to look photorealistic while Rage look more surreal.
But from a technical point of view, BF3 utilizes more effects, better lighting, destructible environments (something that Rage doesn't have at all), soft particles and plus some very very heavy shader effects especially on wet surfaces that look downright impressive.
Texture quality could be better but it still is miles ahead from Rage.
Rage manages to impress with solid performance, unique world setting and large scale environments. It's special in its own way. But the technology is certainly not cutting edge no matter how bad we want to believe it just because it's an id game.
I agree BF3 is much hyped on graphics but people who own the game and are able to play in ultra settings with zero compromise, will appreciate it better in later levels through the campaign mode. But claims that BF3 has crappy graphics and such, definitely come from people that either don't own the game or are negative biased towards it.
