Kindle Fire

Don't need a decent laptop-like gaming device either

It seems the dock costs $150 extra? That's $750 total for the 64 GB version with dock. Still pretty impressive for what you get, but not as great a deal as it seems at first. Apple could probably top it when they update the iPad, the question is will they? Or will they let brand loyalty float them like they do with their laptops and desktops?

Erm, you find me a laptop with a 64 GB SSD designed for gaming for $750 and you'll fail miserably. Apple's current offerings at the same price point aren't even close to the Transformer Prime. Not to mention the dock and extra 32 GB are completely optional. Since you can expand it to 64 GB through microSD and any bluetooth gaming controller or keyboard will work with it they are quite optional indeed.

At $500 what you are getting totally kicks the butt of anything Apple offers, and is at least twice as powerful as the iPad 2's $500 offering (using completely objective hardware measurements, honestly I think it's 10 times better)

I'm not a fan of fake books.

If you read much e-readers are awesome. I never used to understand the draw, but then I got one and it changed my life as a reader drastically. That said, I have no interest in the new Kindle. Unless you're going to make a full-blown tablet rather than a glorified e-reader I MUCH prefer an http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E_Ink screen. You can read an e-ink screen in bright sunlight (looks pretty much just like ink on paper), it's much easier on my eyes, and the battery lasts for a month. Yes, a month.

This is one of my gripes about ereader marketing (not ereaders themselves): the battery time suggested is incredibly contrived to the point of being pointless

example: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-18438_7-20066005-82.html?part=rss&tag=feed&subj=Crave

A single charge lasts up to two months with wireless off based upon a half-hour of daily reading time. If you read for one hour a day, you will get battery life of up to one month. Keep wireless always on and it lasts for up to 10 days. Battery life will vary based on wireless usage, such as shopping the Kindle Store, Web browsing, and downloading content. In low-coverage areas or in EDGE/GPRS-only coverage, wireless usage will consume battery power more quickly."

I'd much rather have them tell me straight-up how long the battery will last just reading books than how long it'll last when Jupiter is in retrograde and Sagittarius is waxing in strength.

Does it have one or more USB ports? If so, you can effectively expand the storage waaay beyond anything Apple is offering (I'm not up to date on their products, but I don't recall the iPad having USB in). Sure, you have to lug it around and plug it in if you want to access any of it, but realistically most of what you'd be storing on it would likely be videos and such, which could probably be swapped around once a day (or two, or more).

But 30 hours doesn't sound nearly as impressive as two months :(.

Yup, no USB port on the iPads. The Transformers all have a USB port, but only on the dock.

They can't tell you, because it depends largely on how often you make the screen refresh. E-ink screens use almost no power when sitting idle, so things like font size can have a large effect on battery life (due to "turning pages" more often). All I can say is that when I use my e-reader for reading (which is pretty much all I use it for), I average about 1000-1300 pages per month, and that's about how often I plug the thing in.

Hey guys, didn't want to make my own thread for this, but I'm seriously considering getting a kindle. I like reading and I feel like I would really like one. Now I have to decide on whether I should buy the Kindle Touch or the Kindle Touch 3G, so I have some questions.

How long does the battery last with wi-fi on?
How often do you use wi-fi on your kindle? (For those of you with a 3G kindle) I have wi-fi at my house and I'm not sure how often I'll download books somewhere else to warrant getting the 3G model.
Can I read comic books on the kindle?

To be honest, I've never timed it. It does go a lot faster when you're using wi-fi, though.

3G is convenient, but I don't think it's necessary if you're mainly using your Kindle to read. I rarely turn the wireless connections on at all.

Can I read comic books on the kindle?

Yep, but unless you go with the Fire they won't be in color.

Thanks, guess I'll just go with regular Kindle Touch. Well that's a shame but I guess I could live with it when I'm on-the-go or something, I still like to own physical copies of comics so I'll probably buy a regular copy before getting the kindle version. Novels I don't really care about having physical copies for though.

I read my Kindle DX everyday. My personal experience is, as long as you turn off wifi, far more than 2 weeks.

BEHOLD! A real tablet:

http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/09/transformer-prime-detailed-10-inch-super-ips-display-12-hour/ ($500)

12 Hour battery life + 6 with dock for a total of 18 hours of available battery life -- Nvidia says it'll get 12 hours of battery life watching constant 1080p video
32 GB internal memory (upgradable to 64 GB for an additional $100)
Guaranteed ICS update by year's end
An incredibly impressive 1280 x 800, Super IPS+ Gorilla Glass display
1 GB RAM
HDMI out, GPS, gyroscope, microSD (allowing for an additional 32 GB storage), 1.2 MP front-facing and 8MP back-facing camera

Dock (additional $150) adds:
already mentioned 6 hours additional battery life
full-sized USB port (allowing for additional storage)
Standard SD slot (allowing for an additional 64 GB storage)

http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/09/nvidia-says-tegra-3-is-a-pc-class-cpu-has-screenshots-to-prov/

Starting price of the iPad 2? $500 for 16 GB internal memory, not expandable through SD cards, no USB, not a quad core, not an IPS+ screen, not widescreen, only rated for 10 hours of standard use (not 12 hours of constant video watching), no keyboard dock (at least not as integrated as the Transformer's).

And of course it's completely laughable to compare the Kindle Fire to this beast of a machine.

I'm sold. You should get a commission for this.
