Soda Problem?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 2:44 pm

It really depends on the person in my opinion. One or two a day doesn't sound too bad, but its one of those things where if you stop drinking it, you'll probably forget about it. I used to drink so much when I was younger, but I just stopped drinking it and I completely forgot about it. With alcohol too it can be bad, maybe try juice instead?

Many, many advlts drink a beer or two each day, with food and stuff. That's just as bad as drinking a coke each day. Coffee falls into the same category too, if you add lots of sugar.

When I was younger, I use to drink around 2 to 3 24oz bottles of pepsi a day. I was honestly addicted to soda, much to my mother's dismay. However, now-a-days I rarely drink in fizzy concoctions; I'm too into fitness for that. ^_^

Whether a can or two of soda a day is "bad" for you depends on the individual. Your metabolism, any personal health issues, etc. In terms of calories, it's not going to kill you, unless you're eating a pile of Twinkies, chips & pizza along with it. And then the problem isn't the soda itself. :whistling:

In terms of teeth - drink/swish your mouth with some water after you drink a soda. Brush your teeth twice a day. For most people, they'll hold up just fine. If you're the sort who's very prone to cavities tho, then yeah, maybe diet soda/other non-sugar source of caffeine, if that's your thing, would be better.

I was told by my dentist that it isn't just soda that eventually ruins your teeth. Its anything carbonated.

It's anything with high acidic content. That includes fruit juice and many other "healthy" things.

As it so happens I drink at least 2 cans a day (mostly Pepsi) and I feel just fine with no weight problems (the occasional jog helps) but overall I don't really give a [censored] about my health. Mind you however I have a very fast metabolism and providing I brush my teeth regularly they stay in decent shape. Besides if I do go without my caffeine fix I tend to get shall we say aggressively minded (well more so).

Too much of something is when you get addicted to it. It will only make you fat if your total calorie intake for the day exceeds your caloric maintenance. You can eat solely McD's burgers everyday for the rest of your life - if the total calories consumed is less than maintenance you will not gain weight.

Of course, we're not talking about other health problems...(blood pressure etc).

I'm pretty sure I have an actual caffeine addiction.

From wikipedia - "...addiction has been defined as physical and psychological dependence on psychoactive substances (for example alcohol, tobacco, heroin, caffeine and other drugs) which cross the blood-brain barrier once ingested, temporarily altering the chemical milieu of the brain."

If I don't drink some kind of caffeinated beverage, I get headaches, and become irritable. I eat pretty poorly all around really. Oops.

I'm in Canada so I know our Ice Tea is different from America.(Cold Green Tea, Yuck) I have about a can a day but it's not to bad unlike Coke.

The only advantage iced tea has over coke is that it's not carbonated, it has as much if not more sugar than coke though. It's definitely bad for you, but in the amount you're taking it I doubt anything will happen.

One or two drinks a day is beneficial for you, I don't have a source on hand but it helps a lot with the heart. It also has way, way, way less sugar than pop does, and the carbonation is natural. I don't really see how you can say they are equally as bad.

Take it from me.. More than two a day is way too much. Soda was designed as a treat, something akin to going out for an ice cream, or pizza, and not as a staple. I went for nearly 6 years being "addicted" to soda, (Coca-Cola in particular, and other than coffee it was ALL that I drank) and I now am looking at thousands of dollars in dental bills in the coming years. Not only does the soda contain an incredible amount of sugar, which promotes enamel damaging plaque, but it contains acids which soften your enamel every time you take a swig, allowing that plaque to get a deeper and deeper foothold with every sip. Ever look at the ingredients on a can of Coke? It contains Phosphoric Acid. Yes, you read right, Phosphoric Acid. It's used in industry to remove rust from iron, to etch concrete, as flux for preparing metals to be soldered, and as an electrolyte in some lead acid batteries. When you drink Coke, you are literally pouring battery acid into your mouth. Don't get me wrong. It's perfectly alright to enjoy one every now and again,(and I on RARE occasion, still do) but for it to become your primary fluid intake is very unhealthy and very expensive. Believe me, I thought my teeth were fine the whole time I was drinking it, and it wasn't till years later that they starting showing problems. The two dentist I have seen have both said the same thing, without knowing my history. "You have severe acid erosion in some areas." Yeah, I had to ask what from too...

I used to drink 4-6 cans of soda every day. I stopped doing that about a year ago, and I dropped about 15 lbs within a few months, without changing anything except my soda intake. Currently, I only drink one 10 oz. bottle of coke (which is actually 2 oz less than a standard can) every week or two. I drink nothing else except water and occasionally milk.

Darn, I thought I had it going with my 90% Wild Cherry Pepsi / 10% Water IV. I guess it's time to stop diluting it, [censored] the doctor's recommendations not to! :P

In all seriousness, though, I have, what? 3 Wild Cherry Pepsis on an average day [Never more than 4, though, I DO have that set as a rule]? That sounds about right. Usually a glass of milk for both lunch and dinner, and a few glasses-worth of water throughout the day. Depending on the day, too, as well as the availability of Wild Cherry Pepsi, I have no complaints switching to just water, though I have to admit it tastes better diluted to ~1/3 Cherry Kool-Aid.

Depending whom you ask they'd label me as addicted, but IMHO I'm really not. I've quit drinking soda of any format a few times with minimal (noticed) withdrawal symptoms, the main reason I drink it's not because I get cravings for it so much as "It's the best-tasting thing I have to drink", though obviously that too can change depending on the day. I've had a few days where a soda sounds extremely unappetizing, etc.

Your'e nothing compared to me.

I'll finish two two-liters in one day. In three hours time.

I'll drink a carton of cans in two.

My kidney's might turn to stone if I don't stop soon.

Also, coke for the win!

Pepsi tastes like syrup and mountain dew is only good when made with real sugar.

I normally have one a week. Although when I was working in Greece it was at least one a day. I think one a day is really bad for your teeth and health.

as with any thing, it comes down to moderation and lifestyle. if you are very active, its not a problem... except maybe for your teeth. i eat fast food every day and with soda, and i am loosing wieght. mostly because i burn alot of calories at work. now my teeth on the other hand... may or may not fall out soon, but that has more to do with the fact that between the age of 12 and 17 i completely stopped brushing my teeth.

But what kind of barbarian would ruin his coffee by adding sugar?
