Yeah ... could be mod tools
Pretty poor communication with the community i guess ... anouncements of the announcement of the announcement of the release date announcement .... he can't even tell what it is ... you can't make surprises letting people in silence when people beg for it ... not even knowing if it's confirmed or canceld or what the heck.
This "
no-gaming-mindset-from-a-capitalist-marketing-department-based only-say-what-boss-allows-on-special-time-schedule-with-strategic-deceptive-tactics-with-special-prepared-statements-with-no-comment-policy-for-a-few-more-bucks" communication is just not working at all, - i don't see the community getting bigger .... this behavior like they have stockholders and that would lose cash by letting some progress updates out regularly. I don't see how this marketing could make them more sales ... a few off the shelf non-gamers ... it's not worth it.
One thing is when you want to surprise and you're silent because of the "silence before the storm" ... it's fun for the community but that's the point when the community has legacy and track record to hold onto that the company is expected to deliver ...
But in cases when there's barely a community, ... you can't DO THAT. And the down side of the larger gaming communities forgetting the brand as well as mixing with bethesda as "a bethesda game" which is not.
But obviously those that very track record from id software know they will deliver ... that's why were waiting - we know it'll be worth it.
But the point is those that are waiting ... surely is somewhat boring ... i would be lying if i said not.
So sad that the forum is abandoned for social sites ... I mean - im 10 years in this industry ... not developing but i understand ... and i know for me personally, i didn't like these kind of surprise, we seen what happend with DNF.
Surprises only worked for Nintendo first party games (zelda, metroid, etc ..) and blizzard entertainment .... i knew the games will blew me away ... i didn't need no updates no nothing i was doing the exatly the OPPOSITE, i was totally avoiding all the media and trailers as much as possible - because that's all spoilers and i don't want to spoil the surprise .... so they were wasting money on me hah.
So you have to calculate the money spent on the marketing - and the actual effectiveness of the marketing that makes the return in sales ... i can say for sure ... about half of marketing is ineffective. 1000 people see it .... 500 are grandmaas , 300 are parents , 100 are gamers , 100 are children, 50 of gamers would check it out ... 25 would actually buy it, and depending on how deceptive marketing is ... some parents might buy it for children ... that's about it

Oh a few grandmas would buy for xmas.
So you see ... how marketing is wrong to the actual community, marketing departments are biggest enemies of the hardcoe communities, they obviously hate people like me explaining this now ... marketing BETS on the easily-deceived people to get sales because those are the only people they can effectively target to get actual return on their investment(marketing cost) ... the vigilant people have marketing filters ... pretty much nothing will EVER make me buy something i didn't intend way before the marketing campaign, and if it's something new that surprises me that i didn't catch before myself then it's only used as a notifier and after that i ignore any further mentions. I don't go into shopping mall and spend 30 mins watching ads ... come on,
who the heck does that.
Speaking about the filter .. it's not like that i would be approached by an ad and actually watch it and think about it and then decide that i won't buy or comply with it -- it's way more than just refusal; this has evolved to a point that i have true resitance to it, my mind does not register it unless i want it to, it does not get into hard memory, it's out of the temp memory in a second - total ignorance to any sort of marketing BS.
So basically you would have to market the game at the beginning heavily ... you don't need so much marketing wasted money after the community and franchise properly establishes people won't need to se tv commercials and trailers .... does minecraft make ... i mean ... everyone knows about that game in the community and it's never EVER had any marketing around the globe like the mainstream publishers.
There wouldn't even be a need for marketing department if everyone were hardcoe people ... (pretty much impossible on this planet)
Stupid capitalistic mindset ruins everything

- just because if they don't have a larger profit margin with the second game it's outed as "not as expected, not as good , not as we hoped for ... so we will dumb down the next title to get more share of the stupid people who will buy it"
So you see how proper genuine quality and legacy sells ... i don't need marketing ... i know i will buy the next Starcraft 2 expansion at launch, whenever it comes out. (obviously ... we must make some revolts on the forums a few times a year to make sure activision didn't take over heheh)
