Skyrim Fail #142: No Ambient Dialogue

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 4:38 pm

Those are all specifically scripted to happen though, aren't they?
At least they make sense now though, in oblivion it would be like

Person A " I saw something strange in the water the other day"

Person B " Did your groceries go bad "

Person A " The end times are coming"

Person B " I have rats for pets "

it made zero sense what was said between people in oblivion. If you were lucky, you would hear something that made sense.

I love how this is saying NPC's should talk more, and the thread below it is saying they talk too much! Hahahaha!
No, this thread says the game should have more ambient, random dialogue between npcs. That other thread says that npcs repeat their greeting to the player way too often. I think both are true, but the latter is way worse.

It's bad enough that the NPC's say the exact same line of dialogue in passing to the player every single time the player passes, but they had to give the same lines of dialogue to each voice actor so that you hear the exact same words from vendors no matter who is doing the voice acting.

Scrap voice acting for non cinematic events altogether and bring back text. Ty.

What's the problem with that? I thought Oblivion was about playing as a mental ward patient, completing missions for the slightly schizophrenic gentlemen in the asylum who fantasize about a medieval world filled with demons and mudcrabs. At least the Radiant AI led me to believe so.

Uh, no. That's the worst suggestion I've heard so far.

This. It would allow higher quality and quantity of dialogue. We are all on the internet, that proves we can all read :hehe:

That's basically going against this entire threads OP.....

Imagine....that would mean NO NPC ambient dialogue at all....t

"Any word from the other provinces?"
"Nothing I'd like to talk about."
"Go on."

Me? Using sarcasm? Never!

I liked Oblivion. After witnessing the ambient dialogues then the glorious moments of NPCs walking into the wall or off a bridge, I felt at ease. There was no need to pretend I'm a normal individual among so many lunatics. So my Argonian lady took off her clothes, ran up and down on the streets then conjured 83 mudcrabs and made the sky rain cheese. Deux ex Sheogorath style.

Even if it was just text, it would still make zero sense.

Well, Beth scrapped the random dialogue because people complained about it so much. It did have a great effect on cities(made them feel way more alive), but the dialogue was pretty ridiculous.

So what we need is not terrible dialog, and maybe a bit more.

I want 2 x the fully random voice pvssyr (Oblivion), plus 4 x the personalized random voice pvssyr (Skyrim).
Guess there is this issue of being made for consoles, requiring a need to size it down, and/or paying the actors.

Not necesseraly, It can be as text only, hovering over people's heads. But i guess that woould go against this "realism" and "immersion" design, whatever that means  If i wanted realism i'd go see a doctor :P

Hmm, this thread again. I thought it had died.

On topic: Regardless of the benefits of a text based game, it isn't happening. Given that reality, I believe we need a random dialogue system similar (but tremendously improved) to Oblivion's.

Nazeem is the most annoying one and it always insulting the people in Whiterun. I heard him once talking to the grocerie woman "If you would have bought the goods from ME they would be much fresher!!" or similar like that. But only the randomly talk is missing. Your Character is also now some kind of a robot who completly ignores the people. He doesn't even look at people he talks to.

I wish he actually did insult other people, because Nazeem only seems to talk to me, as does his wife.

The scripted conversations are OK, but I kinda miss the meaningless pvssyr. Which could have returned in a more realistic way. Why not make the most out of all the voice actors?

im a bit split on this. skyrim handled it much better for the first couple of playthroughs and i loved ulfics speech when i go to windhelm (even though i sympathize with the imperials) but unfortunately if you are doing the game for the umpteenth time.......it gets really old. what i wish would happen is that the speeches would only play one time. ulfics speech isnt as inspiring when he starts it every single time i go into the castle.

as funny as oblivions dialogues were i ended up using a mod that greatly reduced their frequency which helpt alot. perhaps bring a little bit of the random dialogue back but not to the extent oblivion had.

It would be absolutely hilarious if you could court Nazeem's wife and have her dump him.
