Skyrim Fail #142: No Ambient Dialogue

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 8:35 pm

And we aren't asking for a lot of dialog here. Just 10-20 (that seems good for me) random conversations people can have.

Reference: every other piece of dialogue in the game.

If we did have these, in this amount, people would be complaining about recycled dialogue, just like guard speak and vendor speak. I do agree with others that it is pointless, and that it would tax the system to a point where they would have to
take something else out.

I've already experienced the annoyance of random NPCs walking up to me and blabbering about something while I'm talking to someone else about major quest dialogue.

"Hadvar, what are you doing here? And who's this?"
"He's a friend. I--"

"DID I SEE YOU TALKING TO SVEN?"

Last thing I want is an abundance of these idiots yelling at each other in the background.

Don't play the game.
? There's no way the OP will hear any dialogue at all that way....

This. In Oblivion every single person knew and talked to every other person. The richest people in the Imperial City shouldn't just walk up to a beggar and go:

"Hello"
"Greetings"
"[insert something about rumours here]"

That's just not realistic. Instead we have semi-random dialogue, in that it only happens between certain people. Which IMO is much better.
Nah. The towns have about 15-20 people. I'm sure they all know each other. These aren't massive cities. Even if they were unfamiliar with each other, they clearly don't object to spouting trivia to strangers. So, that's not the issue.

For the most part I think the scripted dialogue is fine. If they added a few random ones I wouldn't complain. Now if they could make it so only certain people talked to eachother with these random dialogues it would be nice. Otherwise we would have a child saying to an advlt, "They say syndicates of wizards have led a boycott of Imperial goods in the land of the Altmer" or some such nonsense.

I kind of hated when random people would walk over to eachother to talk. Sometimes while I was waiting for someone to come and talk to me (quest related) they would get caught up in these random conversations and I would be waiting or have to go interupt so I could get on with actually playing the game.

"I work with Belethor in his shop."

How about instead of repeating that line five times, try maybe telling me where your shop is, saying something like "we just got a new shipment of X in today," "have you seen our X, one of our best selling items," etc, etc

Y'know what would be awesome to hear? Arcadia walking up to Ysolda or whatever he name is and saying "I hear you were wanting to become a merchant, would you like to work part time for me?"

This. Especially when the dialogue you are trying to listen too suddenly becomes so quiet you can barely hear it while some child goes on about not being afraid of you even if you are an advlt!

Same goes with the initial dialogue in Whiterun when you first talk to the Jarl. Irileth is talking and the steward starts talking before she is done and you can barely hear it until she finishes. Then all of a sudden the volume of his voice raises back to normal mid sentence.

Random conversations would be nice, but there would probably be too many problems like this. Random conversations drowning out what you are actually trying to listen to.

And we'd have even more people complaining about complaints, but at least we'd have a better game (in the opinion of some).

I wouldn't be at all against if ALL NPCs had something like 2-3 things to say to you when you aren't talking to them directly inside their place of interest (i.e. that guy in the shop) and then 2-3 things to say when you encounter them in other places.

First meeting: Hey, I work with Belethor in his shop.
Passing you on the street: Did you know we just got a new shipment in today? Come take a look. (would be great thing to say when the game actually does restock shops)
Misc.: Hello there. How are you today?

Inside Shop first meeting: Always good to see a new customer, please feel free to browse.
Inside Shop after first meeting: Finding everything alright?
Inside Shop misc.: Welcome again, good to see you.

Y'know, stuff like that.

It's rather sad that in 2011 we still have the old 90s RPG dialogue of:

"The wind feels chill tonight."

"The wind feels chill tonight."

"The wind feels chill tonight."

Agreed, the main reason is voicework is expensive and time consuming.

Same goes with the initial dialogue in Whiterun when you first talk to the Jarl.
The dialogue sequences in Dragonsreach are such a mess sometimes. Between Jarl Lazy slumped in his chair blabbering, the steward walking around in circles randomly and blabbering, Irileth blabbering, and that meathead Nord (Hrongar?) drooling on himself and making sounds with his face, I was amazed the game didn't lock up. I was waiting for the subtitles to just say "???".

Easy fix.

Not every direct conversation with an NPC, like a merchant, has to be spoken dialogue.

You don't need to have Jorlen Greymane say "By the gods!" when you ask to see what he has for sale.

So true. Text won't hurt anybody, oh wait, this is a casual game now, people can't read, they have to hear it.
But really, I miss text only. So much more content.

Nah, that post is about the repeated greetings, not dialogue between npcs.

They really should have added some random speeches for them to talk. Just like:

"A weapon can never be sharp enough!"
"I don't know if you are right with that"
"Are you serious?"
"I think i don't want to hear that!"
"As this was so easy"
"Well we have a big problem there!"
"You don't have to care about it!"
"Right! but it can't go on this way"

I feel the writing and dialogue could have been many times better if not every single piece of dialogue was spoken.

Main quest givers, have them speak. Ysolda doesn't need to ask me in full dialogue to give her a Mammoth Tusk...if y'know what I mean.
