People who started with Skyrim (did you go back)

Erm, I guess the first one I played was Morrowind, but it had been my friend who had rented it, so I didn't get to play it much at that time, then I got Oblivion about two or three years ago for the PC, modded the heck out of it too, since then I've played Morrowind Daggerfall and Arena, Daggerfalls dungeons were too confusing for me though

I started in Morrowind and made my way to Oblivion. When I first discovered Morrowind I was so happy that they finally made a game I would want to play. I played it for months with no break, same for oblivion. played for about 6 years getting it on pc year 6 and modding it. Love both of them. Skyrim is here and has taken the spotlight. I have tinkered with both a bit and can see myself doing another playthough of morrowind at some point to.

i played oblivion for about an hour until i realized how miserable it would be trying to optimizing stat gains through level ups. im a bit of a perfectionist.

that said, skyrim is the only tes game ive played thoroughly.

Mostly this.I am not the perfectionist. The stat gains and level ups in Oblivion seemed confusing, counterintuitive, and complex.I don't have to have perfection. But the way I am wired, I *have* to know the why and how of a game. So that it makes sense in my head, and I can feel like I'm not severely handicapping myself while playing due to gross ignorance of a voodoo leveling system.I didn't last long in Oblivion. Went back to Skyrim, and even though it has flaws of oversimplistic systems at times.... at least I can understand what's going on and why I should be doing A, B, or C.

I bought Oblivion for the PC, but was double dissapointed. I should never buy a game on PC, the controls are hellish! And the game also was dissapointed for me, but what can you expect from a 6 year old game. I think PS3 didn't even existed then yet.

On a positive note, i was very happy when i bought Skyrim, i was so tired of all the first person shooters that i played the last 2 years, Skyrim was very refreshing and i discovered that i don't truely hate RPG games.

Skyrim is my first TES game and I am not going to play any older ones... They look ugly. . . And I am not into RPG really. I only play Skyrim because of the graphics and the interesting quirks, TBH.

Started with Morrowind, played that intensive for a very long time. Theres nothing in the vanilla game i havent found. Explored every dungeon from top to bottom a gazilion times, made everysingle possible combination of skills, pretty much know that game from the inside out. it was great, but going back? Nah, tried it, but without mods the game just cant entertain me anymore.
And theres so many mods for them nowadays i really not gonna browse everything to install what i like, gonna take forever. Its sitting on my shelf, and who knows maybe one day ill get around to it again, but i doubt it.
Next was Oblivion, loved the better graphs and combat, but it just wasnt Morrowind, played it a bit, no expansions or offical mods, heck never even got around completing main quest. And I feel Skyrim gonna be just the same although i will complete main quest on this one, ... sooner or later ...

Yep, sure, would be happy to have all menus and inventories removed and all levelling happen through completing quests and finding items, weapons and spells limited to the few worth using and easily equipped in-game. In short, I'd prefer this to be an action adventure with minimal management distractions. I just don't get off on endless skill options and items that need micro-managing.

There is little choice within quests , you usually either take on a quest or you don't.. would much prefer a focus on alternate story lines rather than endless character customization and items, and an overly complex system of determining your character's actual health , powers and damage resistance, which is often unbalanced and leads to severe difficulty spikes in the game. In terms of smooth flowing uninterrupted play, Skyrim is rather [censored].

The puzzles aren't exactly ingenious either....

I started with Morrowind, then played Oblivion, then Daggerfall and now Skyrim.

I couldn't play Oblivion without mods, with mods it became a much better game. Morrowind, with mods, is still my favorite Elder Scrolls game to date. But I'm sure that after the release of the CK Skyrim will eventually become my favorite Elder Scrolls game, it certainly has the potential.

BRITANNIA RULES !!! Lord British and Origin had all my attention for about 20 yrs and didn't even pay much attention to other games besides Ultima.....When ultima went the MMO route I started looking around and heard of Oblivion so tried it and after much tweaking of the ini's to get it to run right I liked it and still play it....a very heavily modded version...I like Skyrim....would really love it if it wasn't for steam.....and don't bother posting that I can run it in offline mode.....I do....but you can't run it forever without an internet connection. If I ever get to the point where I start looking for other games I will probably choose a console game and steal my sons 360....LOL

I started with Oblivion, then Skyrim, and I then tried out Morrowind because that Graphic & Sounds overhaul 2.0 came out (great mod!). I prefer Morrowind over the two later titles imo, it just has a lot more solid content while Skyrim is more about the dungeons and the pretty cliffs I guess.

I did go back to see just how far we have come. What's weird is that I had no problems with Daggerfalls graphics but Morrowinds put me off for some reason.

As a child I played Arena and Redguard yet I never knew of TES, they were just games my father owned and I enjoyed playing. So Oblivion wasn't my first Elder Scrolls game but it was the first one I took seriously and I thoroughly enjoyed. After playing it I looked more into TES and found Morrowind gave it a try and instantly fell in love with TES as a universe instead of Oblivion as just a good RPG. I went back to give Arena and Redguard a try and realized they were games I played as a kid. I do not think they are as good as the open world RPG's we have today. They are still fun but are completely different games.

If you already own the games then yes you should defiantly play them. IMO Morrowind is the best of the TES series, it might not be as good looking or play differently then Oblivion/Skyrim, but it has the best atmosphere of them and a better story. If you feel Morrowind is pretty lack luster as far as graphics and such go then you should also check out this website and use the mods they suggest. It doesn't bring it to the level of Skyrim's graphics but still makes the game really enjoyable to play.

The new face of RPG players, those who don't really like RPG's. Congrats Bethesda, you really know how to draw in the RPG players.

Started with Skyrim. Not yet, I don't have the time now to go back and play the previous ones. But when I DO have the time, I will certainly go back to Morrowind, then Oblivion. Heard so many praises for Morrowind. :)

Two things:

First, you're really missing out on something.

Second, you're saying that the quality of a game is heavily based on graphics. Saying you won't test a game just because it has below average graphics compared to what you CAN get today is enough to make me cry. I tried to play Arena&Daggerfall, but it was unplayable on my computer (controls not working...). From what I hear, I would've loved Daggerfall, and it would've been really nice to get through Arena just to see how the series started.

- It's supposed to be an RPG and not an adventure-action game, but it's more of a adventure-action game with a little RPG spice. Now, which spells are "useless"? Also, if you want things that simple, play solitaire or find a game that's made for super-simplicity. Also, options are options, and implementing lots of clothing, armor and weapons that uses the same animations isn't that time-consuming. It's just something for the modelers to kill time with. Also, boss fights are supposed to be hard, and by that I mean, hard enough so you can't go eat dinner while having the boss stay hitting you and expect to be alive when you come back 30 minutes later. Being more or less immortal is possible, but where is the fun in that?

In terms of smooth flowing uninterrupted play, Skyrim is rather [censored].

-If you call skyrims "numbers" hard, you'd commit suicide over the earlier games. It's ridiculously simple. Finding a wall where there is a dragon shout and then unlocking it at some random time later with a dragon soul, is that complex? It's almost as simple as you finding a chest and having that key in your pocket. Alternate storylines were in Daggerfall, and I think it also were there in Arena. I agree with you about either you do the quest or you don't. In Morrowind you often had more than one solution to a quest. The perk system is a waste of time, and it's not necessary to pick any perks at all. I've passed level 60 and haven't spent a single perk yet. Because they're not needed. Nor have I even lifted the smithing hammer.

The puzzles aren't exactly ingenious either....

- Funny thing is that you're presenting the reason for puzzles being way too easy in your earlier statements, and saying that adding two or more numbers together is hard, much harder than 22+17+9 (which is 48)?

PS: If you find enemies hard to deal with, there is always the difficulty slider if you really feel the need to stick your tail between your legs.... Also, be sure to increase your health every now and then.

PPS: If you want something super-simple you can try Trine, Trine 2, Portal, Portal 2, Cogs and almost every FPS game there is out there.

PPPS: I'm glad that I don't see posts like this too often, it makes my heart cry.......

Well there's no point in arguing about game preferences, but we're on some very different ground here. Level 60 withou perks? On what difficulty???

There is no way I would have gone anywhere in the game without enabling perks as soon as they were available, and I only started enjoying this by using the Auto Perks mod, which unlocked a bunch of perks .

I don't play video games to do maths, that's not the kind of puzzle i want to play! An example of what i like is a gate in a dungeon that you figure out how to open by getting subtle clues from a book you find nearby... That kind of puzzle, but harder.

If you call skyrims "numbers" hard, you'd commit suicide over the earlier games.

Precisely my point. If i wanted numbers I'd play board games. There are too many numbers involved and the system results in ridiculous looking difficulty spikes. Last night it took me a lot of pounding to defeat a couple of bare-chested bandits... they wore no heavy armor to be seen.... about the same amount of pounding it took to kill a frost dragon..... so i was supposd to go through my entire list of active effects, inventory and skill tree to figure out the reason? That's too much work, I play games to relax and have fun, not to do more mental work.

I am not an RPG player.... A game is possible where everybody is kept happy, though, it's all about user interface.

I just don't see the enjoyment in navigating huge inventories and menus and having to choose between so much stuff...There is no point in collecting most items as vendors never have the money to buy it.... I'm supposed to put a whole lot of perks into speechcarft to get them to have money? really?

I started with Oblivion, you should really give the older titles a shot. They're all unique in their own way. Since you own Morrowind, I'm assuming your on PC, so remember, if you don't find the games to your liking you can always mod it.

Started with
Skyrim is my first TES game, people like me I pose this question to you. Did you go back and play Daggerfall, morrawind, oblivion and if so how did it compare/feel to Skyrim? I have oblivion and morrowind here should I start playing them?

I started with Morrowind. i`ve played other rpgs before, but was strange because it didn`t really resemble earth like most rpgs. It was the giant mushrooms that first confused me. Morrowind is very much like a culture shock in which you really have to put aside your present ways and adapt. The game also reflects this by dropping you in the middle of nowhere and saying, "You`re on your own now. Good luck!"

If that scares you so you quit the game then it`s not for you, but those words made me realise there was something special here.

The game does not make it easy. There`s NO free fast travel, pay your way or walk (how I wish they stayed with this), weapons wear and tear, but you have oodles of options, 3 tiers of clothing you can wear so you can have peasant garb under bone armour. LOOK at your map to find where you are. A wealth of story if you`ll just spend the time to READ. There is some speech and voice talk in battles. I liked the battles, but Mods help make them better. Everything had that feel that the Devs were trying to make a real world devoid of Earth.
Morrowind is a major 3 course meal and you would probaby hate it.

Oblivion is in many ways like Skyrim. It was the `new` Bethesda going all out for more cash. gone went the strangeness of Morrowind and in came the obvious Lord of the Rings clone. It hand holds you so much that I got sick of it. I couldn`t even dive to find a chest without being told I found it. Oh and you have the completely riduculous GPS radar map that never existed in such a world, but who cares, eh? And you have your Fast travel too. Only Mods saved the game for me. You`ll pobably like it.

Then Fall Out 3. I mention FallOut 3 cos some of what you see in Skyrim is from FO3. The lockpicking, the darker feel...

Of course, morrowind has the worse (but still ok) graphics and Skyrim the best graphics.

After that Skyrim which is better than Oblivion, and worse than Morrowind.

I started off with Oblivion, and I've got to say. It was an amazing experience. I played Oblivion over and over again, over a year to 1,5 years.
Later on I bought Morrowind, and I've got to say. It was an amazing experience. I never finished anything in Morrowind, as it was too big for me.
Then in November I bought Skyri,, and i've got to say. It was an amazing experence. I have played 250 hours, but the game is starting to lose interest.
Two weeks ago I got myself the free edition of Daggerfall, and I've got to say. it was an amazing experience, too. Maybe the biggest game I've ever played.

So I've played them all, excluding Arena, Redguard, Battlespire and the Elder Scrolls Travels.

I'm spoiled by skyrim and don't see returning to OB and those damn gates.

Morrowinds graphics and controls were garbage. I couldn't get past that missing attack thing and didn't want to have to spends hours leveling to get it where my attacks actually hit

From what i hear we need some morrowind ideas brought into a skyrim world to have the perfect TES game but that's part of the great debate, not this 1 :)

Sounds like tons of fun and explains where they'e coming from, to deliver such pathetic combat mechanics in Skyrim.... I guess they're slow learners on that front...

If you want to put live combat in the forefront of your game, please do get it right!
