Oblivion DB vs Skyrim DB

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 4:20 pm

I think all the guild questlines need a major overhaul to make them as good as Oblivion. As it is it's a step backward, with too much emphasis on the stupid radient story quests to pad them out, and you're flug into the main quest too quickly instead of starting out with the little jobs and gradually working your way up through the ranks.

Hopefully a future DLC but I doubt it.

That's true about Skyrim's DB quests as well.
I dont recall any quests doing that. Or at least none that mattered.

Oblivion's Contracts were much more interesting. Each one was a unique experience. Skyrim's unique contracts don't really start until after the Wedding.

Plotwise, Oblivion was more thorough, but I liked Skyrim's theme more. It was cathartically simple compared to a lot of the "Trying too hard" Convoluted conspiracy/savetheworldwithinthisguild crap that usually happens. Restore the Dark Brotherhood by killing a political powerhouse icon.

Pacing is an often overlooked aspect of both gameplay and story, and Skyrim's Dark Brotherhood was strong here as well. Aside from the unusually early reveal of the Listener, the game paces itself within this faction extremely well. Giving the player "Breathing Room", while still having enough narrative pull to keep things going. While the Nazir Contracts were a little too basic, they served as a great vessel to break up the the action. All that said, the Oblivion Dark Brotherhood was just as good, if not better. The Oblivion version plays through two distinct "Chapters" of a story, that themselves contain Introduction,RisingAction, climix,FallingAction. So I declare Oblivion the winner of pacing, but the strengths of Skyrim's Dark Brotherhood shouldn't be ignored.

Endgame is about the one part Skyrim wins hands-down compared to Oblivion, because Oblivion really didn't have an Endgame. Sure, you could speak with the Night Mother, but that was really it, at least Skyrim utilizes Radiant Story to generate virtually endless contracts for the player, though because the reward is only gold, this allure of this is short-lived.

I think I liked killing the emperor it was better than just killing a traitor I didn't like guilds in oblivion lots of quests seemed trivial but I wish skyrim's were longer.

Honestly.. and I might be the only person who thinks this, but I actually tend to like the Skyrim DB more than the Oblivion one. My reason is because when I first played the Oblivion DB.. I didn't really feel like I was playing the role of an assassin (I didn't actually wear their armor, but nor do I wear the Guild armors in Skyrim), and then at the end you end up
Spoiler
avenging people who were murdered because the DB traitor killed all the people on that boat, where that Altmer woman gave you the Redwave cutlass

I know that the Oblivion DB questline was a fan favorite and most people enjoyed it most, but I tend to like Skyrim's a little more.. maybe it's just me. I thought the bonuses in it added fun to it at least. Could also be because Oblivion was my first TES game, and I didn't expect that in doing the DB questline..
Spoiler
I'd be so easily duped to kill so many members of it, though I enjoyed meeting the Night Mother

In the end, that's just how I feel about them. Skyrim's OB fits that assassin role I was looking for and while I agree that the Guild questlines were a bit short, both the DB and Theives Guild are among my favorites.

In terms of Oblivions questlines, my favorite was the Theives Guild and I really liked The Fighters Guild too.

Couldn't put it better myself.
I liked them but they were a letdown. The companions was what, like six quests?

I prefer my Guilds "Trivial" in the grand scheme of things. I'm sick of saving the world 8 times in one game.

My only real complaint about Oblivion's Guilds, were that they felt insular to the rest of the game. Like the Fighter's Guild, Mages's Guild, Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood didn't exist beyond their faction walls.

Skyrim actually fixed this. Each guild has a strong presence in the game. Even the isolated College is referenced by everyone who uses magic as the "Go to Place" to learn more, as well as citing it as their place of study.

It just seems to be a Bethesda habit to solve one issue, and then introduce a bunch more that didn't even exist. That's the peril of essentially "Making a new game", as opposed to more direct sequels like Assassins' Creed.

Exactly they all felt like they were over before they began. OB's made you feel like you are an assassin, a thief or a mage.Skyrim's not so much. There is one main quest that everything leads to and there isn't much to do besides.

I think the OB DB is the better of the two.

Oblivions DB was just awesome. In some strange way. Oblivions DB Members felt more twisted and sick... which is good.

Spoiler
Especially the traitor ''Mathieu Bellamont''. Did someone else read his diary? This was a nice insight on Mathieu Bellamont's mind which made him better as a villain imo. It was ironic that after all these years he planned to take revenge at the Night Mother, he had to find out that he cant even damage her.

So it had a overall deeper story for me.

Spoiler
I felt more sorry when the Skyrim DB members were killed tho

edit: Oblivions DB was hidden much better.

Spoiler
the Dawnstar Sanctuary is hidden so bad that you cant even call it hidden anymore... Maybe i'm just wrong and it was never supposed to be hidden.

Oblivion was a goody little two shoes type world. Defiantly happier than Morrowind. Skyrim put it back down to earth.
