Where are my feet?!

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 10:46 pm

I find myself looking at my feet approximately 5% of the time, and when I AM looking at my feet, I'm generally trying to look at something below me, and thank goodness there is no feet to obstruct the view.

Honestly speaking, Skyrim is not Mirror's Edge. Unlike the sceneries (which is pretty much the main attraction), you don't exactly need to to see your feet when you're exploring or fighting.

Left 4 Dead allows you to see your feet, but honestly speaking even in a game that requires me to look around, I find myself not remembering about the presence of my feet. Counter Strike never had it, so I don't really need

But that's just IMO

Hey guys,

did you ever wonder why you cant see your feet or body in first person view.
You have two arms, a sword and a shield, magicly hovering over the ground.Where did the rest go?Wabbajacked?! :cheat:

I mean games like The Darkness or Aliens vs Predator for example had a real first person view, why not Skyrim? It's not that difficult to do.

Look at the positive side; in Skyrim you don't need feet... you can walk magically without even seeing them in 1st person
so,unless you like to kick someone else's ass in a fight :bunny: they're useless in this game

Apart from joke i think that its a trivial thing, even if i understand that this would mean "less immersion" for someone.

There is a mod that gives you a full 1st person body (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=6002), but it's a WIP and an alpha, and shouldn't be used on saves. Fun to mess with, though! And given some of the issues the modder seems to have had, it ain't that easy having legs in Skyrim... Though sometimes it'd be kind of useful to know just where your feet were on that exposed ledge, lol :)

There's a mod, a WIP (work in progress) to acheive that feature, but it would be nice to have that in the DLC coming soon since the mod is not completed yet:
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=6002. It's named
Real 1st Person View -WIP-

I assume it's to avoid the "skating action" that you saw in the 3rd person mode of Oblivion and FO3.

They sort of mitigated that effect by defaulting to an "over the shoulder" 3rd person camera view in FONV and they did something similar for the 3rd Person camera is Skyrim.

....wow. Watching the latest video of that looked horribly awkward. Yeah, definitely glad it's not like that. (Even ignoring the head-bob when running....)

Chronicles of Riddike had it on the original Xbox. I think it's more of a lack of effort than a tech limitation.
It's not necessarily a lack of effort either, sometimes it's just a choice.

No. The game loads seperate models when in first and third person since animation and camera position don't translate easily. The first person hud is rendered in 2d space which means adding feet would either look weird and always be too far away instead of bending to step up with the ground (Like on slopes or steps) unless they actually accounted for that which would be a large undertaking to reprogram that part of the engine.
Or they could just, you know, make the rest of the body exist in world space. Problem solved.

Where's your nose? You should be able to see that in first person view as well. But you can't, so I'm going to be really bothered about it and conclude that BGS is an incredibly lazy developer.

Its so essential to see your feet or your nose in a videogame ? :ermm:

Well,if you were having the promenades that the Dovakhin have to do in the game for sure you were not so "fat" at this point  perhaps only a little bastard :bunny:

And don't forget that in Skyrim all the npcs have a statuary body either. well,to tell you the truth they have all the same damn' body :bunny:

Niamh is an archer and I always look through her eyes when we are in combat and I can honestly say she has never fallen off of a cliff, or indeed anything as a result of not being able to see her feet.
I would suggest it's an immersion breaker for you - because it's not an immersion for everyone.
It depends how you use first person. I agree that using a bow in third person if far more difficult, especially when it come to needing to be accurate with distant targets.

I play first person all the time because I try to "become" the character rather than be just an onlooker, (full immersion). I find that things don't get so impersonal that way, I can use my own moral compass to act in a way that I would if it really were me there. I don't just kill someone who annoys me or Belethor's General Goods in Whiterun would be top of my list, his condescending "Do come back." as if I was being a total skinflint annoyed me no end. I use his shop now only when I need to sell off the junk from quests. Yeah, I know it's only a game but I do like to roleplay so I take it personally as I would in real life. When you immerse yourself to that sort of level, certain things tend to break the immersion, not seeing your own feet when you look down is one of them.

I have played first person games where you can look at yourself in a mirror, look down and see your own legs and feet and even one where your hair can cross your peripheral view in a windy area or when you look down far enough. That level of detail allows you to get into the game and really become the character. I even get an adrenalin rush when it comes to melee combat and trying to escape capture by guards etc.
