is skyrim for nerds?

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 3:55 pm

We live in a world full of hypocrisy and appearances.

There was a time where noone got Internet, and those who used to surf a site at the university, or chat, were "nerds". Now everyone has its own blog, Facebook page, Youtube video page, etc.

There was a time where a few mobile phones could be heard ringing here and there, and people looked at the guy holding the phone disrespectfully, as some kind of... worthless snob, using that useless devide, only as a show off. Now everyone has a cool-state-of-the-art mobile phone. With Internet, of course.

Now some consider nerds those who play on computer. Console is "cooler".

And anyway, you're cooler (meaning not-nerd-at-all) if you spend the morning playing Need for Speed, or Call of Duty, but you're a nerd if you play an RPG where you have to read dialogs and use a playstyle that doesn't involve FPS and killing.

There is still, anyway, some people that for not being considered a nerd for playing Skyrim, they act like a psycho, killing everything on sight and posting about it on the forums or on Youtube. They specially do it if they bring buddies home.

It`s true to say that the `nerd` is everywhere now.

I remember seeing a ring of teenagers all twiddling on their smart `computer` mobile phones sending text messages and what not to eachother. Once upon a time we would have been laughed at doing the same thing.

Funny, how as long as everyone`s doing it it suddenly becomes cool.

It seems to me the `nerd` has won!

Considering that people who normally calls other people nerds are the same people that are totally confused when it comes to certain simple things, and has to call a "nerd" friend when they need to "install their new printer-ma-thingie and don't know how to connect it to the harddrive-ma-bob", I'd say that nerds rule .. no matter if they play Skyrim or not :D

I'm sure that the cavemen who decided to cultivate crops of plants were also nerds.

True. Main society becomes edgy when faced with new tech and feel stupid because they don`t understand something `clever` that someone else does.

How to redress this feeling of inadequacy? Call the `smart` person a `nerd`.

Happened in school all the time.

But it`s the nerd that generally make everything work.

Firstly, being a nerd is something you should feel pride in. ironically, the negative aspects to nerds which are at the heart of it's criticism are almost all present in the people who do nerdy things but worry about being a nerd or actually feel the need to deny being a nerd.

There's not much worse than a nerd in nerd denial, they will lash out at others and make fun of nerds.

I don't think one can actually be a 'nerd'.

I can relate to the OP here. But it seems that anymore, whoever would be considered a 'nerd' or a 'geek' is in the eye of the beholder, and those terms are now seen by many in a positive light rather than a negative one.
Me, I proudly consider myself a nerd/geek on account of being a gamer (particularly an RPG gamer), a fantasy/sci-fi/b-movie/grindhouse fan, a 70's progressive rock music fan, and someone who has Asperger's syndrome.

Sadly, there are fake/pose(u)r/wannabe "nerd/geek" types who've tried to fit themselves in with the clique, just because either they see it as the "cool" thing to do or they think that true nerds/geeks aren't "cool" enough to really be considered nerds/geeks... :ermm:

It depends on what you play skyrim on.
If you play it on consle then you are cool.

Lol. Console ok, PC not.

That is such a contradiction since the console is just a pc that makes you think you`re not a `nerd` when you are exactly that!

But this falls into the `You have to be smart to use a PC, but not to use a console` thing which makes consolers feel bad so what happens. PC users become `nerds` again.

Funny.

I did some testing and found out I was wrong earlier.
Doesn't matter what you play the game on when coolness is to be determined, but how you interface with the game.
Since I play skyrim on PC, but use an xbox controller, I retain my coolness factor.

So in the end I am still cool despite playing on PC. Also, my coolness is in no way affected by how nerdy this post sounds.

TES used to be for nerds, like most RPGs... but I think Skyrim has well and truly taken the series into the mainstream. Sure, Oblivion was popular, but Skyrim is on a whole new level of widespread popularity and appeal.
