is skyrim for nerds?

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 7:00 pm

Yes, we are all nerds in some way shape or form; we come to online forums to discuss a game with zero impact on life. But that is okay. Embrace your inner nerd as there is nothing to be ashamed of. Being a nerd isn't a bad thing, it just means you like games (if that is what you consider a nerd to be). If you are happy being a nerd, then continue being one. You should live life doing what you enjoy, and if that is playing vide games, then good on you for following it.

Is Skyrim for nerds? Yes. But it is also for anyone else that wants to play it. Liking skyrim does not make you a nerd, Playing skyrim does not make you a nerd. Now, if you decide to alter your entire life to be more like your skyrim character, you might be a nerd.

If enjoying various types of multimedial entertainment is considered a fair reason to label me as a nerd then yes, I am a nerd and proud of it. If it was not for us "nerds" hundreds of thousand people would have to look for another employment.

Some enjoy watching movies, some enjoy listening to music, some enjoy reading a good story. I enjoy doing it all at once

I tell people I play elder scrolls and they say "ohh cool"

But dont tell people u play games like WOW or Runescape that will hurt your reputation... (im glad I have never played WOW and stoped playing runescape once I got a ps2)

I do consider myslef to be a bit of a geek and I really enjoy playing my video games, but..... I also love things like hanging out with my friends, doing things outside (even hard work, for some reason if its outside and a nice day the job doesnt matter to me, I just enjoy it) Firearms and Quading. I only play video games when I have nothing to do. I live in a small town with only 2 good friends who live close by (the rest live in another town 20 mins away or in a different province)

Is Skyrim for nerds? NO... Anyone who says Skyrim is stupid or anything like that most likely hasnt even experienced the game. The majority of people who say Skyrim is stupid or nerdy most likely dont even play video games or think they are to cool to admit its a good game. And for the people who have actually played skyrim and still say its nerdy... power to them and good for them.... atleast they tried it out and not just say its nerdy...

The only game that I really say nerds play is WOW (sorry to all WOW players but like common.... it really is a nerdy game...) I even consider D&D to be less nerdy than WOW (but that all depends on who you play D&D with)

And like another poster said Video games are becoming a mainstream thing in society. Most video games are no longer frowned upon and you can openly admidt playing games and people wont give you a hard time about it. For example I graduated 2 years ago now and everyone in my class played video games. The nerds, geeks, jocks, babes, goths, greasers, the losers, the popular ones... EVERYONE DID.

Nerd is just a label. But if you must....

It is mostly used with some kind of negative connotation. Usually in response to when the person calling someone a Nerd feels insecure and needs an ego boost. They call someone a Nerd and then feel better about themselves. Nerds are anti-depressants.

I play A LOT of Games. If I could find the time, about 8 hours a day easy no problem. When I was a single I would play routinely for 6 hours or more a day.
I also...
Spoiler

Surf.
Play football.
Read.
Drink Alcholol.
Do many types of drugs.
Have a 3.7ish GPA in my Junior year of college at a University.
Have a Scholarship.
Have a girlfriend.
Have family.
Have friends. Close ones and those once in a blue moon ones.
Eat food.
Use the bathroom.
Write lame fantasy fiction for myself.
Write bad poetry.
Try to freeflow
Hang with my good friends, few of which are in college.
Hang with my friends, most of which are in college.
Work.
My point is that there are many other things other than gaming that could define you. Labeling yourself a Nerd is kind of ridiculous. Your a human. Sure misfortune decided to visit you more often than others but just because you do something you enjoy does not mean you "fail at life". Seems to me your making the best of your situation. At least your entertained right?

Btw I am sure there are many other things for you to do in your area. It is just that you are doing the thing YOU like to do. No reason you shouldn't as far as I can see.

I swear there is such a big stigma with playing games and "not being a nerd". Labels are funny.

INB4 cool story bro...

(no offence intended)

are all gamers considered nerds? does playing elder scrolls make me a nerd? i need reassurance :<

i have over 200 games and spend most my life playing games but there is nothing to do where i live and i have no friends due to illness

whats the difference between a geek and a nerd?

btw im a complete moron, in my 30's and fail at life in general

but im pro at games and been playing them for over 20 years

I dunno if this is a joke- Probably is.

But...

First thing you need to do is stop putting yourself down then things will look a whole lot better for you.

I consider myself a huge nerd. And I see the term "nerd" as a compliment. Makes playing Skyrim you a nerd? Who cares :). If you want to, I guess it does.

If I'm a nerd for playing computer games then so be it, I couldn't care if I'm labelled as such.

Imo playing games doesn't make you such as alot of people now adays play games of some type or another.

I wouldn't worry about what other people think, if it makes you happy then just carry on

No friends due to illness? :\ People you know must be mean.

I'm a nerd, but TES didn't make me one. (well kinda did lol.. been playing since like 03..)

I have more friends than I can keep in touch with, and not being all that modest, I don't usually have any difficulties with teh womenz (let me make the distinction that I'm not saying I'm a ladies man, but that's almost entirely out of self control/personal beliefs).. but I'm a huge nerd. RP is the bomb, and high fantasy is like my bread and butter. Seriously.. going to school for computer engineering, total nerd. I may not in appearance seem to fit in with the rest of my peers considering they look like they have spent the last decade of their life indoors and playing video games.. but I indeed HAVE been indoors the last 10 years and playing video games haha (when I'm not out with friends of course  )

Edit: I realize this post may sound super [censored], but just realize I don't generally think overly high of myself, and I was only being 100% honest for the sake of the conversation. Oh and I generally don't give a crap if people think I'm a nerd.. although me loving Star Trek: TNG and playing high fantasy RPG's all the time isn't usually what I lead with when meeting people haha.

Edit 2: Oh and OP, I have plenty of friends who are also like 10x as nerdy as me, and I love them to death. Being a nerd these days is like being Black. The people who look down on you are primitive jerks who need to get with the program. (although admittedly, having dark skin is a lot less defining than being a nerd.. so it's definitely still worse to discriminate bc of color lol (in the sense that those discriminating are complete idiots))

I wish it was, unfortunately it's not. It's more like a nerfed RPG for the masses, that's why you got short and simplified questlines.

Nerds rule the world!! There's no reason to put yourself down because you're a nerd.

Other than that everybody seems to be playing games these days. The gaming industry is bigger/as big as the music and film industry, and still growing faster than ever. Gaming has become a normal hobby it seems, a normal way to spend free time, seek entertainment and/or escape the realities of normal life. You just need to make sure you don't become a hermit, or at least that you don't become a hermit all the time.

Of course a videogame like this attracts the nerd burried in everyone (some have a bigger nerd in there than others but still) and to be honnest I don't mind being called a nerd sometimes. Just be who you are. I can play a game like Skyrim but at the same time I can go for canoe trips for a week in the Canadian wilderness or multiday hiking trips in full autonomy, go to bars and concerts in Montreal, whatever.

Just do what you want. Of course, a little balance always is better, though I have to say Skyrim has removed any sort of balance in my life for the time being. It's a good thing this game did not come out in the summer or I would have wasted precious outdoors time or summer Montreal nightlife time.

One thing it really has affected though is my reading. I read a lot less books now that I play Skyrim.
