I WANT MORE! (plus steam svcks)

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 4:06 am

I don't believe this crap to be honest, how does it punish the honest buyer? you get all of your games kept in one place, no need to use the CD so it will never get damaged. You are able to talk to all of your friends via chat or mic no matter what game you or he/she is playing. All games update them selves meaning you do not have to search for every update released and manually update your game. Now we have steam workshop where we will be able to create our mods then upload them straight from the CK. Users will be able to download and install said mods with a click of a button.

Hardly a punishment.
My games are already kept in one place: My shelf. They're safe and sound there, they won't disappear if the internet dies for whatever reason or if some company goes bankrupt. I don't mind using a disc because I treat them well and consequently they last for a long, long time. I've had a single purchased disc that died on me over 15 years of gaming.

I don't want to talk to my friends while I'm gaming and I definitely don't want them to talk to me while I'm trying to do something else. If I want to talk to them, I'll use Skype or Messenger and if they want to be talked to then they'll be logged on.

I don't want my games to update themselves without my input becausee that just causes features to change and mods to become incompatible. I don't need Steam finding updates for me because clicking "update" in a game menu button or manually going to the game developers website isn't really challenging to me. Maybe it's difficult for you but it's damned easy for me. Never caused me any problems, as it happens.

Now we have yet another [censored] feature that wasn't needed, presumably at the cost of serious delays to the CK, and with the guaranteed issue of requiring a useless third party client running on our system whenever we use the CK. Where's the benefit? And good luck configuring more complex mods through the workshop.

Worst thing is, once the workshop is up and running, if it isn't a complete and utter failure, you can bet that future TES games will eventually rely exclusively on the workshop for mod configuration. The CK will only export to a workshop format and mods have to be activated through Steam Workshop. All for the benefit of gamers, of course. Who have no doubt begged gamesas to make a [censored] internet service mandatory in order to use OFFLINE mods in an OFFLINE game. At least that's going to be the way they'll present it.

I strongly oppose DRM, and I've spend days looking into each one I could come over. You got lots of different types, you got the intrusive ones, which install themselves so deep into the system or even hardware that it's close to impossible to get rid off. They might also wreak havoc on your computer (Starforce, SecuRom). You got LaserLock, which is more or less acceptable. It makes it difficult/impossible to copy the game, however, any scratches to the disc may destroy it completely beyond any hope of recovery. Then you got some single-player games which requires CONSTANT internet connection which is completely unnecessary.

Now you might ask, what kind of DRM do I find acceptable? CD-keys, cd-checks and steam (I haven't tested origin, nor do I have any reason to). The reason that I find steam acceptable is that it is easy to remove, not intrusive and you get games for approx 50% of the original price, compared to what you'd pay where I live. Steam just works, and it takes the user/buyer into consideration, and it still works as a drm solution.

"Steam svcks" rants often translate to "I'm mad because I wanted to steal this game" or "I have stolen this game and can't get updates."
That is a completely baseless assertion and you ought to be ashamed. I don't like Steam either, does that automatically make me a pirate too?

Steam doesn't svck because of the DRM included in steam games. Steam's DRM is usually pretty weak anyway; most hackers don't have a problem cracking Steam games, and as a legitimate user of Steam I personally have never had any problems with it. My biggest problems with Steam are:

1) The system requirements. No one can deny that Steam's system requirements are ridiculously high for an application of its scope. Seriously, how good of a processor/connection do you really need to read HTML news? Look at a forum? Download software? Start a game?

2) It locks users into its system, and by that I mean that if you want to play PC games, you must use Steam. For many people, for whatever reasons, that simply isn't an option. An an example, what if they don't have the connection for it? The idea that pretty much every household in America has a broadband connection with an unlimited data plan is simply a fallacy. Many people have to pay for each megabyte they download, and when you're downloading thousands and thousands of those guys at a time, the bills pile up. So what are they going to do? Switch ISPs? Oh, but suppose they can't? What then? Are they just going to stop playing games entirely?

Steam has a monopoly on the game market, and that svcks.

3) Steam is just buggy. Granted, it used to be a lot worse; when it first came out, a huge majority of people had trouble getting it running. Nowadays its vastly improved, but it still has issues. Unexplained stalling that can last for minutes on end, random crashing, a flaky offline mode, and a stubborn auto-update system still plague thousands of gamers everywhere. But again, what can they do about it? Nothing, unless they want to stop playing games entirely. But that's not really an option, is it?

i want more too kill in skyrim and new places to do it, there needs to be more conquest battle between stormcloaks and legionaires than it being judged by a one-way questline, i like to make rapid in-the-moment desicions and maybe in the future i wanna be a stormcloak instead of a legionaire. there needs to be more giants, more dragons, more sieges more more more and more of everything, i wanna face 200 bandits instead of 2. i want this game to be set on EXTREME mode. i'm tired of slaying everyone in the towns because i'm too bored to search for more bandits, dragons, bears, wolfs, draugrs, exc, exc,EXC,EXC!!!!!

i wanna go to cyrodil and slay monsters and more EXC there. i wanna go to morrowind and murder EXC there. skyrims too small!!!! i can run from a fort northwest corner of the map and be at whiterun in 20 mins and be at the other corner in 40!!! i wanna go more places.

i want there too be a perk in twohanded line so i can hold 2 greatswords, 2 perks in archery line so i can shoot bows faster than original 30% and a knockback perk that makes weak bandits fly back from being hit with an arrow
i wanna make my guy more taller and buffer than everyone else so it accomodates for having two greatswords!!! i wanna have a nord that looks like a GOD!!!!
i want shouts to have more power and strength so they are worth shouting, i want storm call too be a freak lightning storm than a drizzle with afew cracks. OMG do i hate the cooldowns, there needs to be a manacount instead of a stupid hour cooldown so frost and fire breath can be more useful. i want my god-like nord to breath like a dragon than hiccup useless shouts!

I WANT MOAR!!!!!!
GIVE ME MOAR!!!
>!!!!!

Maybe you should spend less time playing and more time learning grammar and spelling?
"i want more TO kill..."
"ETC, ETC, ETC"
"i want there TO be a perk..."

They are not that high in today's terms technology to be honest.. if you can't runescape you will have issues with steam

Oh, but suppose they can't? What then? Are they just going to stop playing games entirely?

This is a infrastructure issue more so then steam issue. They cannot control such and if you think they can do you blame youtube for same? You have complete control when you can download games and patches if you know your capped wait till next month to install such. But if its a game such as Skyrim that is being advertised chances are is that you can find a hard copy and install from that, auto patches can be triggered on/off. One of my Canadian friends has this issue but he still uses steam and origin and he does follow a similar method.

Steam has a monopoly on the game market, and that svcks.

Monopoly no, majority of the digital market yes, Capsule for example is a growing online network with ability to trade games you have bought back in for credits, origin is new required to play ME3 and BF3 so far but also has their previous game on it that cannot be purchased from Steam. Saying steam has a "monopoly" is like saying Intel (CPU's) have a monopoly on the market.

3) Steam is just buggy. Granted, it used to be a lot worse; when it first came out, a huge majority of people had trouble getting it running. Nowadays its vastly improved, but it still has issues. Unexplained stalling that can last for minutes on end, random crashing, a flaky offline mode, and a stubborn auto-update system still plague thousands of gamers everywhere. auto update again can be triggered from the game options, I have lost a previous account due to steam worth more then $200 when it was farily new. I still use it steam I understand such can happen but its widespread again your computer can handle runescape you shouldn't have much issues today with steam unless you get into a very isolated issues that could be tied within user error more then likely.

Mods extended the play life of Oblivion for me, I'm sure they can do the same for Skyrim.
You won't be mad about steam anymore once they get the steam workshop integration working, trust me.
Nothing wrong with a bit of DRM if it actually provides an additional service.
I for one wouldn't mind DRM without the extra service. One time activation is fine for me, I don't need a bunch of extra services I'm not going to use. Sure some might have use for the extras but not all and why should those who don't want the extras have to put up the added hassle? Let those want the extra services sign up, but don't force those ones who don't want it to have to put up with the extra hassle.

Why does Steam svck? I can download any game instead of ever having to go to a store. I can find all of the games I need in 1 location. I do not need to keep CDs with games any longer. I can play offline if I want to. I can play friends/brother's games just by signing in to their accounts and playing in offline mode. I rarely ever have any issues with Steam except for in multi-player games where I could desync from the cloud which is HIGHLY rare and I can STILL play. Patches are incredibly easy and quick to do. What's your beef with Steam? It isn't like Gamespy...
You find use of the extra services? Good for you, but not everyone is gonna want them. Those who want to use them, fine, but don't expect others to like them just because you do.

Steam is GREAT ...
you don't have to stay online to play your games .. if you guys tried Ubisoft DRM you wouldn't say Steam svck .
and why to keep your games CDs/DVDs when you have the awesome steam .
But will Steam always be around? If Steam ever closes shop, where you gonna get your game from then? At least those who take good care of their CDs & DVDs still have a backup they can rely on years down the road, if they want to keep them.

"Steam svcks" rants often translate to "I'm mad because I wanted to steal this game" or "I have stolen this game and can't get updates." Often grammar is a tip-off to intent here.
So all the people protesting SOPA are the same ones who pirate digital media?

Hardly a punishment.
Perhaps not a punishment, but still a hassle for those who don't want to make use of the extra services. Even if a person wants to make use of some of the extra services, weren't those services already paid for by purchasing the game? If so then why do Steam users have to put up with pop up ads that we get read about in the posts above? If I buy a product that sure as hell shouldn't be taken by that business as an okay to start soliciting me. If I buy a car I don't want an industrial vacuum cleaner along with it. I just want the car with no extra services if I don't want them. I think the old adage,"Don't call us, we'll call you," should hold true. If I want your business, I'll come to you; don't hassle me with business I didn't ask for. It's exactly the people toting about all the services and don't get the fact that not everyone wants them, that helps to feed the "Steam lovers" stereotype. Plus disks don't get damaged by themselves, people can take good care of their own stuff if they want to.

Their host is fine. Stop using AOL dial-up imo.
And what if that is all a person has access to, regular dialup? Why should it be mandatory that they have to put up with the internet to play a single player game?

I'm not sure how G4WL was in the early days, but I recently bought FO3:GotY and I haven't even had to bother with G4WL. Sure it's there, but I can ignore it just like it's not there. Now, can I ignore Steam like it's not there? Not from what I've read so far.

You can hard copy backup any game you have in Steam on a disk or any other device. If Steam does go down finally (don't see how it will the profits they make from hat fortress 2 can keep it up) you will have your copies available some way or the other because if its installed its in your computer as well as any backups you have.

So all the people protesting SOPA are the same ones who pirate digital media?

Majority ya.. if you watched youtube of any video of any music or game your a pirate ARRGH!! I learned about sopa/pipa over youtube

Available internet again is a infrastructure issue Steam cannot handle such, now Bethesda again using a 3rd party online network is their issue. Steam is just a service that allows such and would gladly do such because if they do they get a share of the profits from a competitor.

Game for windows live is worse then Steam, in every way from its very clunky interface from its service in general. If you do not have a issue with GFWL there is no reason you should have a issue with steam at all.

Meh, I wouldn't worry about Steam.

I hate forced software, but these things have a way of self-destructing and making themselves targets for malcontent.

The fact that it is forced software is why people don't like it, it has absolutely squat to do with piracy and anyone saying the majority of discontent regarding it is voiced by pirates is being an obtuse lipserver.

How would you like to have Steam open just so you could access the forum, then approve your post? Then aggregate data on your posts? Steam is the Google/Facebook of gaming, and screw that.

OT @ OP

More is coming, and there are always prequels and sequels.

G4WL may be indeed worse, if I used it, but so far I haven't found that I have to deal with it. I'm still able to play Fallout 3 without having to sign up with G4WL. I haven't gotten Skyrim yet. Can I play Skyrim without having to put up or sign up with Steam?

I understand what you're saying about the extra service, but to be fair it's hardly a hassle. Also, the ads can actually be disabled simply by turning them off in steam settings. Although i'd never do that as steam actually has some fantastic deals during the Christmas period. I am the type of person who still prefers a hard copy over a digital copy. Yet even i can't resist some of their deals.

I can understand frustration when it comes to things such as Games for windows live, that really is waste of space. Still, each to his own and all that.

If the game has steam with it you have to log onto steam put in your code and with some hassle start loading your game from disk, due to steam always tries to download the game for you even if you tell it not too. So after a few attempts and the code is accepted you can start installing your game per disk. Now if you buy it off steam then you have to wait for it to download take about 4 times as long then installing from a disk. Then every time you play your game you have to sign into steam to use your game. Now some will say that is BS just go to off line. Well they are correct and not correct. Sometimes it will make you sign in if you have not signed in over a few day to two weeks.
I have several games with steam and have the disk, I had to get rid of my internet do to I can't afford it right now. So all my games requiring steam will not work do to it steam keeps telling me I need to sign in. Even if I go to off line steam and my game tries to loads, It will not and again prompt me to sign in to steam....By the way if you like moding your game and say something goes wrong and you have to delete the game and reinstall it. YOU cant do to you will have to resign into steam to reinstall it again...

Carrotfeets: steams svcks is because its a use to be more lazy on things you own so it can be your own fault, like instead of using a CD you need 2 more things to run it and losing your game has become more easier so you have to go buy another one from steam. if you were only to have a cd all you would need is the cd's needed and a confirmation code then just waiting for install and you wont even need internet, your done. but with steam, your game is all ran digital and it gives steam more power to make an "oopsie daisy" on your account cause it got hacked or some technical difficulty the company had with a server just erased your account and all the games you had on it. if your lucky enough to write down all your information you mite get your games back but problem with conformation codes online is like WoW "its already in use" so you HAVE to go buy all your games back. i dont like steam handling my games. so whats the difference between a corperation and a pirate?

Zuzax:i bought this game for xbox with honest work, i'm not that stupid to commit a crime and not that smart on how. but tbh in a recent article i read on the reason why SOPA exists is plain sense of corperations being whiny white collar pirates trying to bully people into buying products without letting people make a better desicion. what i'm trying to get at here is steam is the exact same thing of EA/activision and blizzard in a different mask trying to arrest more control than the others so they can come out ontop. there trying too act innocent so they can get there own way in the future when enough people come to them for less problems in playing games. if this doesnt make sense to anyone then i got nothin else to say except one thing.

steam svcks.
