On the main gaming PC, a 23", 1920x1080. I should have gotten a 24". I still prefer single monitors, the lines and edges of multiple ones drive me crazy. Tho they are cool and all.
We sometimes hook up PC's to the 50" plasma TV too, since hubs likes to play with a controller/sit on the couch, which is always fun... (we sit about 8 feet away from it I think).

What size would it make me forget I'm just playing a game?
One million?
...seriously, for a 2D monitor, no size is big enough for that. You'd need to be surrounded by a curved/circular monitor with uber sound system and a laser/gun targeting unit (no keyboard) that you use while standing up and moving around for that level of immersion.

But for most people, I think 27" on a desktop is a good size. If you're talking about a TV/couch, bigger the better. 50-60 I'd say.

Just couldn't imagine playing Skyrim on this... (my old monitor =.=)

svcks having to lean in and squint playing shooters on my 15.6" laptop screen. And that's 140 PPI.

I find I have to do that on my 50" rather than on my 20"ish monitor.

A bigger monitor might not be much of a visual improvement, but it does make things easier to see. Similar to playing 2D games with scaling; 2x scaling would decrease the apparent PPI by half, but it still looks a lot better.
It does to a point. Which is why I think 27" isn't bad. 32" starts to be a pain, imo, because you have to push it further back from you anyway to "see" everything without having to move your head much (at least I would), so what's the point.
But then I tend to like being right up close to the desktop monitor so everything is already "easy" to see anyhow. It's also more immersive.

edit:

Hahaha!! Too true.

I'm the same way, I'm mostly a console gamer until I get a better PC so I have my console hooked up to my PC and I sit pretty much right in front of my monitor and I find it more immersive than sitting on the couch and playing. Heck, my computer habits are so intense that when I do play on my 50" tv in the living room, I grab one of my comfy computer chairs and park it right in front of the screen so it's just like I was playing on the PC.

Not a million. Assuming that you're sitting 2-2.5 feet away from a monitor, and display with a pixel density between 200-230 PPI with a game playing at a matching resolution would look the same to a human eye as looking through a window (of course assuming graphics are realistic).

I wasn't talking about technical or realistic graphics stuff. I was talking about immersion and the aspect of forgetting you're playing a game. Nothing is going to do that.
Games can make you "lose time" and go to bed later than you planned, but I never forget I'm playing one, because, well, I'm sitting in a darn chair in the middle of a room in my house. A bigger monitor does not = immersive virtual reality.

I interpreted the sentence as meaning, not an immersive quality, but one where at which point would someone be able to confuse looking at a screen to looking out a window.

Gawd, we had a CRT in the office for the longest time. Such a headache-inducer. I installed a VNC server on it and just remoted in because otherwise I'd always get a headache (to make matters worse it was stuck at 60 Hz with no way of increasing it)...

Ol' reliable hasn't induced any headaches (that I know of) & it's at 60Hz (can't change that at all)

what always induced headaches for me with a screen is when color & brightness is way off

Asus VW246H, but there is no 24" monitor in the list above. I had to go for a 25" monitor.

Same, it's a 24" Samsung ToC (Touch of Color) LCD at 1920x1200 widescreen.

CRT monitors never gave me headaches or eyestrain. I dunno why. I miss the CRT "look" graphically, honestly. LCD's still svck in comparison, to my way of thinking. Not that they can't look very very good, mind you, especially vivid color wise. It's just a .... technical difference? Contrast issue? Motion and pixels (especially pixels in text vs smooth but still readable letters)? eg, I prefer plasma big screens to LCD big screens, too.

I don't miss the CRT weight, however. Those 19"+ CRT's could get darn heavy.

30" Apple Cinema Display (LCD/2560x1600/Matte), right up in my face.

*The pitiful little box in the middle is 720p

Eventualy, I'll want an MBPr with the 2880x1800 screens, but not until matte and >= 2GB VRAM/I sell a kidney.

That's what happens when you sit too far away from any screen given its size.

Dell U2311H 23" and a Sony Bravia EX400 32", both 1920x1080.

~22-23" is my sweet spot for gaming. I tried using the Bravia as my main monitor and even with a really deep desk it was just way too big. It only gets used for couch+controller situations now.

I wish I could find my old CRT monitor. LCDs are great for displaying their preferred resolution, but anything lower just looks bad in comparison. (and most games I play are much lower)
