37 Days, and Still No Updates

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 4:27 am

Okay, I won't buy it until the community says it's free of freezing. At least it's sold at bargain price these days, but even that is too much if it's unplayable...

Looks like you won't ever be buying it then. This game will never be free of freezing. I'm not saying that to be bitter, but it's because of the Game Engine itself. It's too obsolete for a Game like this, and you can't exactly patch a Game Engine.

Because it's not the same as the data of the game.

The easiest comparison I can think of is like trying to fix typos in a book by replacing the material the pages are made from with something else.

The engine consists of code and of course it can be rewritten just like any code. Besides, the engine works fine in other cases, such as the PC version of Fallout 3. Even the PS3 version of Fallout 3 works well enough if it's the non-GotY version and if you haven't played for too long. I finished FO3 at level 15 the first time and had no freezing at all (that was 40 hours or so into the game, I think). As I understand it New Vegas begins to freeze pretty much from the start.

Aye, it's not the same data sure.. But it sure is patchable, provided they've got the source. Which they most likely have seeing that they've been working closely with bethesda on this one. And if they dont, well then bethesda themselves may have patched it on their behalf. In any case, the engine is quite patchable.

Please look up the information regarding creating a game engine and stop posting that it can be patched. It can, but for every kilobyte of data that would get changed, tons of game data would have to altered to accept and use the new adjustments. Now with all of the problems this game has, It would take a couple of months (if not years) and tons of Megabytes (or even Gigabytes) to essentially redevelop the engine and the game. That would be pointless, as the amount of time spent doing that could be used developing a completely new and far superior engine. Also, if they altered too much, it could make your game not function with your save, as it would pretty much be a new game, so it would be a moot point if you couldn't use the save you were trying to get fixed. The main problem here is that Obsidian decided to use the same engine as Fallout 3, which had already been showing signs of problems, and pushed it WAY past it limits.

Uh, what? I write code for a living and have been working with game engines on several occasions (right now as a matter of fact), so I'm quite confident in what I'm saying here and what you're saying is just plain wrong. Sure, if they'd add new features to the engine (like a new animation system), then they'd need to change some of the assets as well and then you'd be partially right. But for bug fixes? No. Since a bug fix shouldn't change the behavior of the engine except make it work as expected. So, yea.. you might want to look up "the information regarding creating a game engine" yourself, mr. ;)

+1. An engine is an independent unit with a well defined interface, so whatever you change internally won't necessitate changes in the modules connected to the engine, as long the interfaces remains the same (which they will if it's just a bug fix).

Well, let's hope the latest patch does some good. I can live with occasional glitches and stutterings, but not freezing.

There not going to fix the engine. they would have already if they could. so as much as it may be possible, it ain't gunna happen. they have a new engine. what do they care about their old one?
