In praise of Skyrim's combat

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 1:36 am

Maybe if you're daring. If you're one of those "avont-gardee" sorts who does things differently... and to that end there are a few weapons in the games that aren't swords... nor even axes.
But obviously, most people just want to use swords, sords and sooaarddss to hit dragons with. Lots of dragons. Red dragons, green dragons, other red dragons and sometimes sorta whitish dragons with red bits.

... And maybe an occasional wolf or person or something, if you spot one and really want to hit it.... but mostly the swords are for hitting dragons.... and the dragons are for being hit by swords.
AND THAT IS SKYRIM.

To be completely unsarcastic, Skyrim's combat completely fell apart for me when I made a dual wielding warrior... because it was literally L Trigger, Right Trigger, L Trigger, Right Trigger, L Trigger, Right Trigger, L Trigger, Right Trigger, L Trigger, Right Trigger over and over and over again.

I didn't have to worry about positioning because I could literally just stand in front of an enemy and kill them faster than they could kill me.

By fluid, i'll assume you mean piss.

By fluid I actually mean flow?, since I can transition from one form of attack to another, without ever bringing up a Favorites menu, and without having to give up my melee abilities just so I can use magic. But thanks for trying.

The combat system I have enjoyed the most from any melee game is hands down mount & blade, but Skyrim is still tones of fun.

It sorta bothered me that the two can't operate independently of each other. Either left attack, or right attack, or both simultaneously.... But ultimately the DPS didn't seem to be any different with two weapons to just having one. In fact just about anything in the game can be resolved by flailing Mehrune's Razor at it.

Of course the fact that Mehrune's Razor is a dagger rather than a SWWORRDDD can just be overlooked for now.

Just like Skyrim can't.
Corrected for accuracy.

Not quite sure what people mean about the 'fluidity' of bioware style combat... unless one's referring to the fluidity with which floating power bars above people's heads and freeze-framed area effect targeting reticles can give you eyestrain.
Yes, Skyrim has menus too... but mostly you wind up just swinging the sword you brung... success isn't so dependant on the pause-based tactical planning. That may be a decent brain-training mini-game, but it's not fluid. It's hardly even a gel.

Just like Skyrim?

Funny, I seem to remember that if I wanted to switch from a bow for some ranged attacks to start the fight, and then close in for some dual wielding daggers, and then finally finish with a fireball I would have to:

Equip Bow
Open Favorites
Equip Dual Daggers
Open Favorites
Equip Fireball

And then if I wanted to go back to dual daggers:

Open Favorites
Equip Dagger

Yeah... same exact flow as KoA.

It can become a button masher if you make it one, personally I find it rather good given the fact that you can't swing while falling/jumping.But I have managed to think of new ways to run my attack and have figured out you can't swing while jumping/falling but you can swing the sec. you touch the ground and have made some rather daring moves off cliffs or jumping over tables etc...Compared to The force unleashed which is another sword play game it's really not that close to a repetitive button masher as some clam it is.

I didn't see anything on the box saying "only get two hotkeys, and they don't work properly"...

In fact, the whole hotkey thing seriously fails when it comes to dual-wielding two identical weapons. It just can't handle it. You try hotkeying both the items.... but oh, they've formed a pile. Try hotkeying the pile.... oh, but now only one item is hotkeyed... It is pretty much unworkable.

Isn't that what this is all about?

Even with the D-Pad options, transitioning from one item or spell to another and then to another is clunky.

In KoA to attack with one weapon I hit X, the other Y, and to use equipped abilities/magic I hold R and press X, Y or B, not to mention I can just press L to block without having to waste a "hand" slot for a shield.

Skyrim's focus isn't combat (despite most of the game being... combat) so it's not going to be as fluid as KoA.

To the op, Nice try Its easy to say that on a skyrim board. But any place else, KOA's combat beats Skyrim's hands down. And to say its button mashing proves you don't know anything. I played it on PC and enjoyed the game alot. And i still play both. I have a Champion Battlemage and its probably one of the most fun character's i ever made. Using spells and melee weapons flows really well. I like both games and see no need to bash either of them.

I'd bet £100 they know their own name, thus proving you wrong.

I hated Kingdoms of Alamur. It has some good concepts, like the class evolutions, but the combat was horrible and exploitable beyond all repair. If nothing else, it shows why we shouldn't have "Perfect" hit reactions. Once you can indefinitely stagger-lock everyone with bunnyfarts, all combat becomes piss-poor.

I'm only sad that Ken Rolston was deeply involved. He was largely responsible for my true gaming Nirvana. (Morrowind)

PC, 360 and PS3.

Didn't come out too long after Skyrim.
