In praise of Skyrim's combat

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 7:08 pm

So I bought Kingdoms of Amalur last night and I had always read that the combat is amazing. I popped it in and right away I was put off by the combat. Everything felt cartoonish and unrealistic. Nobody can move like that.

I was thinking about how some people bash TES combat but I love how much more realistic and less arcade-like it is. Don't get me wrong, it could improve some. I would like to be able to thrust with swords for instance, but the more realistic approach is what I like and Skyrim has the best I've played so far.

What do you guys think?

I definitely enjoy the feel of Skyrim's combat. When I got into that first scuffle in Helgen and had a chance to take my sword for a test drive, my immediate impression was a resounding, "WOW!" Gotta love swords. My playing style tends to consist of rushing in and hacking at anything that moves so I steered clear of bows and daggers at first, but, boy, am I ever a convert. The stealth kills you score with daggers are fun to execute and getting that perfect shot with a bow and arrow can be downright satisfying. So, yup. I'm a fan.

I've played both games, and I think it really depends on what type of combat you enjoy. Kingdoms' combat flows a lot better than Skyrim's, but Skyrim's combat feels more personal and gritty.

I agree, KoA combat looks like something from a children's cartoon. While Skyrims combat can be improved, its good enough for me.

in KoA you can mix it up and it never gets repetitive in skyrim however it gets repetitive fast the only combat that I think is good is sword and sheild for a game based around combat skyrim's combat is meh

Skyrim is not based around combat. Where you get that idea from?

I went ahead and highlighted the important part of that post for you.

For many (if not most) players, there's a lot more to Skyrim than combat. That said, I think the combat system is pretty good. Nothing to write home about, but again, it certainly isn't the main focus of the game.

If the responsiveness of movement controls was better or we had a roll of sorts combat in this game would be near perfect for my standards

Of course Skyrim is about the combat! The vast majority of skills are purely for combat or almost completely for combat!

If Skyrim really supported other things, there would be deep dialogue, consequences for your actions, long questlines; but there aren't, the combat itself is quite poor for 2011/2012 anyway.

It's fine. Combat in Skyrim is more about preparation than actually fighting. In melee it's not 100% about hack n' slash but it's pretty close. There's blocking and some movement but that's pretty much it. The only thing I hate about the combat in Skyrim is that you can't jump out of the way of something. For example, I see a Deathlord getting ready to shout and I don't want to get hit by it. I should be able to execute a move where I can suddenly leap behind a wall. As it is, all you can do is try to shuffle away. Outside of that, it serves its purpose well.

Combat is KoA is more about button combos and power attacks. Combat in Skyrim has a more personal feel, like reaction time in blocking and swinging.

So your one point to make in favour of Skyrim combat is that you like it a bit better than some other cartoon game or other?

That isn't exactly an accolade... ?_?
Plus we all know Skyrim is all about hitting dragons with swords and not much else (occasionally hitting dragons with axes).

I can't understand anyone praising the combat in KoA. Tried the demo and it seemed to be more of the same Dragon Age type; pause... multiple layered option wheel... animation... pause... wheel... crap. That, plus even more headache inducing technicolour.

Surely it's a virtue in an RPG that you can feel you're playing a role, not that you're playing an RPG. Skyrim hands down for being more 'combatty' rather than 'wow I'm definitely playing an RPG-style combat'.

Um... the only wheel you ever pull open is if you want to use potions other than the quick Health/Mana potion, so no idea what you are talking about...

Not to mention Skyrim basically does the exact same thing with its "Favorites."

The Favourites Menu ... Where you keep your best swords for hitting dragons with... and then completely fail to effectively organise them to any extent.

I'll take Skyrim's clunky, unresponsive and minimalist combat over the glorified dance routines of KoA and similar crap any day.

Maybe if you're daring. If you're one of those "avont-gardee" sorts who does things differently... and to that end there are a few weapons in the games that aren't swords... nor even axes.
But obviously, most people just want to use swords, sords and sooaarddss to hit dragons with. Lots of dragons. Red dragons, green dragons, other red dragons and sometimes sorta whitish dragons with red bits.

... And maybe an occasional wolf or person or something, if you spot one and really want to hit it.... but mostly the swords are for hitting dragons.... and the dragons are for being hit by swords.
AND THAT IS SKYRIM.
