Pre-order Disappointment

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:32 pm

When I went to my local gamestore and pre-ordered FO:NV I was informed I get a pre-order bonus. I immediately went home and looked it up on the internet, to my chagrin, it was extremely underwhelming. Another Armored Vault Suit, A 10mm pistol, and 5 stimpacks. I guess the 10mm packs more of a punch or whatever, but with the new weapon mods, I'm hoping it at least has a sweet custom skin, the stimpacks will probably be useful early in the game.

The real bone I have to pick is with the recycled Armored Vault Suit (Armoured Vault Suit for those of you in the U.K.). It just isn't practical. Yes I understand they've written it in by having Doc Mitchell being an ex-overseer or something, but come on, it's just lazy. It made sense in FO3, you were in a vault, the vault was near a town, and they explained it within the world. However, as you do not come from a Vault, and while I assume there are Vaults in the Mohave Wasteland, it does not mention them im anything I've seen and they could be far away.

Now to whine about this (lets be honest, that what I'm doing) without providing an alternate solution (albeit one that is too late to implement, outside of mods) is useless, so heres mine: Armored (Armoured (U.K.)) Business Suit. It's a suit, (obviously) but altered in appearance and effects to be more resiliant to damage, and wear and tear. I imagine it would look like a combination of the Dirty pre-war business wear, Merc Charmer outfit and yes, the aforementioned, now tired-out Armored Vault Suit. It would look cool, and more importantly, it would make sense. It's Vegas, they've mentioned they wanted to maintain a Rat Pack 50's era feel, and I've seen screens with many more folks wearing business suits than they did in the Capital Wastland, so this would provide an outfit that fits the setting and adds something cool for the player to own that they haven't seen before. In an ideal world, it would come with a cool fedora too.

Anyway, that's my two cents. What does everyone else think?

I'm a day one Fallout 1 purchaser. And I still don't like it, not to mention that the events of Fallout resulted in Vault 13 being abandoned, and one of the few remaining vault suits was worn by the chosen one, years later. Since this game takes place over 100 years later, how has a cloth item survived despite what looks like a great amount of wear and tear? Nostalgia aside, I still feel it is a disappointing pre-order bonus. They could have just as easily put one of these in game, possibly in the ruins of a vault (13) which I and I'm sure other original fans would agree, would be much cooler than just getting one for no reason. And as I previously mentioned, it is explained by having Doc Mitchell being an ex-overseer. I'm sure it's not for Vault 13, so how did he get a 13 suit? It just doesn't make sense.

Looking at my sig I just thought of this. If there is a .223 pistol, all will be forgiven. I won't give two craps about any suit if I can use my favorite weapon in any video game ever once again.

Ekhem, Jim, read that quote
Also, you can just throw away that suit and forget about it, or get another Pack, so I dunno the complaining ;)
PS. Speaking of the .223...

since the .223 round isn′t in the game I wouldn′t count on it, but of course with PC mods you can still have it.

I pre-ordered and apparently I'm getting some Tribal gear. I'm in the U.K., not sure if that would make a difference concerning what free stuff you would get with a pre-order.

Eh, considering all it really is is a homage to Fallout 1, I really don't mind. Of course, it was my fault that my last hope of pre-ordering the CE was at GameStop, or else I would have gotten the Mercenary Pack.

The Classic Pack was never shown as being anything other than a tribute to Fallout. If you don't like it, then pre-order from somewhere else... the classic pack isn't the only pre-order pack out there.

I don't see a real problem with the armored Vault 13 suit; you're probably not going to be using any of the pre-order armors after the first several hours anyway.

The Chosen One was a freaking Tribal and wore that jumpsuit through all of Fallout 2 under his armor.

So looking at the pole options I notice that according to the last option, if you get the CE you get a special armor depending on where you bought it. I too, ordered from Gamestop and have the Classic pack. I ordered from GS because they are near my house and I honestly had no idea about about pre-order bonus packs or that they were different from retailer to retailer until I had already ordered mine. That said, can someone tell me what kind of armor I will be getting for getting the CE through Gamestop?

IMHO, the "Tribal Pack" which has a recycled Raider Blastmaster Armor as it's "exclusive", is the worst themed back. I would have preferred a stripped down "tribal power armor" similar to the one from the Pitt and perhaps a "http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/images/2095-5-1230086715.jpg" as seen in some of the FO2 promos.

It was enough of a disappointment for me that I was willing to change my normal buying habit of purchasing through Amazon and changing my pre-order to Gamestop instead.

As for the "Classic Pack" the best exclusive bonus is not the Armored Vault 13 Suit, but the exclusive Canteen, which will serve an important function if you plan to play hardcoe mode.

My favorite pack is the bonus from from Walgreens/Steam, the "Caravan Pack" because of the Light Caravan Leather armor. It's like the Regular Leather Armor minus the shoulder guard. Very cool...

I must say, i really like the throwback.
On the pistol though, i am glad. As a firearms enthusiast (aka gun nut) it really irked me, it's just so illogical... If it were an alternate version of the PLR 16 or something i could handle it, or even an ar-15 pistol.

Note: I realize that not everything in Fallout is logical, but that was just one thing that stood out to me over time.

I thought there was only one piece of armour unlocked, and for you that would be the classic pack.

Pre-order bonuses were Never meant to be concrete / critical aspects of the game. I'm glad the bonuses are not significant, as it's all low-level equipment anyway and will get surpassed for better stuff very quickly - so its not something that is worth getting stressed-out over. Its a bonus, an enticement to get folks to pre-order and get some extra goodies for Fallout freaks like me - but I would not want it to be more than that.

Heck we're getting the All Roads novel, and that in my book is a better pre-order gift than we usually get (and its a RL item!).

I'm happy with my bonuses, I think it would cause more problems if they added Sweet items in for pre-order, as all the non-pre-order folks would get just as mad.

Yea, the more I read about the pre-order bonuses I realize that it's not limited to the Vault Suit, they are all essentially just recycled armors from 3, with a different name given to them. Pre-order incentives, with no thought or planning from the actual dev team involved. So, I may whine and complain about how a 13 suit makes no sense, but it doesn't really matter, I just have dreams of a Fallout with a sweet Armored Suit and the .223 pistol. Theres plenty in this game to be happy about, Obsidian seems to have taken the FO3 package and re-dressed it to be more like the fallout we old-school fans know and love. At least from appearances, I just hope they deliver. And I think they will, I have faith in Sawyer, Avallone and Urquhart. Oh, and Marcus is back, and that kicks ass! Jacobstown is the first thing I will attempt to search for.
