Problems of a Homeowner

Funny thing is, the AI is sometimes like that.

My follow has shot me in the neck several times and hes killed both my dogs.

I'm wondering the same thing myself. I forgot about Lydia. Bought the house for my new hubby and I. (My second character) When I walked in there she was heading upstairs!

I'm thinking I don't want you in here damnit! That means there will be FOUR of us in such a little *** house :(

It got even creepier when she would always sit on the chair next to my bed and watch me sleeping. Altough incredibly hot (most probably due to way too much makeup), I was somehow glad when she did not survive the latest Dragon attack.

But I think telling her to wait outside of your house should do the trick as long as you don't hire other followers, if you do that, she will probably go back inside.

If a Follower Waits in one spot for too long, they will get bored and leave. Telling her to wait isn't a permanent solution.

Just have her join the blades if you don't want to kill her.

Get far enough in the main quest and have her join the blades.

You could try getting yourself an underwater breathing helmet, and then loitering at the bottom of a deep lake...she might drown.

Alternatively, take her to someplace you don't like (I'd pick Windhelm), then bash a guard and step back...eventually they should kill her, and you pay a small fine...think of it as lawyer's fees for arranging her 'dismissal'.

Nah. Followers will swim back up to get air.

Love all these marvelous solutions! The ones for killing her were especially inventive.
But I don't want to kill her: generally, I only kill baddies.
And I don't want to marry her: I'm a girl (little old lady actually) who's not into girls.
So I'll follow the simple approach : tell he to go somewhere and wait. Thanks, @SubRosa and @acetoolguy. And I'm glad to learn that I don't have to be a Thane to purchase other houses -- good info, @Liz'erril.

Dude, don't get rid of her.
If you do, your house will fill up with bread.

On my first character, Lydia and I went exploring west of Whiterun. I was jumped by a pair of sabrecats, killed one, turned to deal with the second and used a shield bash. Unfortunately, Lydia was between me and the cat and was down on one knee but I had loosed my attack before that registered. Oops. :shakehead:

On another character, I finally became a bit annoyed with her sitting in my room all the time. So I used the console to disable the chair by the door. After that, she stayed in her room, occasionally walking over to the top of the stairs, but that's it. Spawn a chair in her room and she'll stay put forever.

Housecarl comes with the Thane title, not with a house.

In all cities, except Whiterun, buying house is a prerequisite for becoming a thane, meaning, you can purchase house and stop right there and not apply for the thane title. That way you will get no housecarl.

But you can't buy a house until you become a thane, can you? For example in Riften you have to sort out the skooma problem before you're allowed to buy a house, and sorting out the skooma problem gets you made a thane. So how do you buy a house without getting the housecarl? What am I missing?

I bought Breezehome for Lydia. I was feeling a bit guilty because I just avoided her when I became Thane of Whiterun. After I bought it she showed up and moved in.

I have four homes all with attendant housecarls. I leave them where they are. People with me tend to die a lot so I travel alone.

It has been a long time since I used a follower, but I believe you can simply take her somewhere - like the Drunken Dragon Inn for example - and tell her to wait. Then just never go back there.

That is in Cyrodiil. The south-eastern part of Cyrodiil. Unless there is a pretender who opened up a DDI in Skyrim!

If there was a Drunkin' Donuts in Whiterun, I'm sure we could leave Lydia there.

Lydia was killed in a quest to recover three books for Ug (or whatever the college's librarians name is) so luckily I don't have that problem. But she can be annoying. Especially when you want to avoid having a NPC aggro you, because she will take the initiative and pick a fight most of the time.

As has worked, many times in the past.

Take her into a dragon fight, then instruct her to wait while you run away!

She either waits there for all eternity, or she'll die

Thanks for the idea, but I wouldn't want to kill the young lady; I just want her to hang around somewhere else.

Unless she dies she'll keep coming back to the house.
