Problems of a Homeowner

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 9:04 am

I'm a loner. Always have been, always will be. After my last successful quest, resulting in bagloads of septims, I decided to buy Breezehome in Whiterun. But the minute I unlocked the door, Lydia appeared. I didn't ask her to come, and I don't want her hanging around, pvssyring when I want to read quietly, rattling the glassware on my Alchemy Table, and so forth.

Is there any way to get her to leave?

Ask her to follow you, arrange an accident. That or delete her via console.

Thanks for the idea, but I wouldn't want to kill the young lady; I just want her to hang around somewhere else.

Take her with you the next time you go up against the Falmer. She wont come back and you don't get the guilt. Well, not all of it anyway.

"Breezhome belongs to the Dragonborn!", and then cut her head off.

It has been a long time since I used a follower, but I believe you can simply take her somewhere - like the Drunken Dragon Inn for example - and tell her to wait. Then just never go back there.

This is not a problem of a houseowner. This is a problem of a Thane. Think of it this way: Thane title comes with its perks (getting guards off) and with its social responsibilities (having a housecarl, at least they're not forced on you as full time bodyguards). The good news is, you can purchase houses in other cities without becoming a Thane (Solitude, Markarth, Riften, not sure about Windhelm) and thus without housecarl. So, I suggest, save up some cash and buy a house elsewhere, and leave Breezehome for Lydia, everyone happy, no innocents dead.

Whoa. Finally, Bethesda is using that M rating.
It's good to be thane.

Take her to one of the dungeons that has lockable cells and "accidentally" close the jail door while she's inside.

If she has a lockpick, she'll get out. Best thing to do is lock her being a door that requires a lever to be pulled.. Tell her to wait inside then pull the lever! TADA! She can never escape!

In the future when AI becomes self aware all these NPCs will be coming for us. You have been warned.

Funny thing is, the AI is sometimes like that.

Give her to the blades, if you have progressed that far in main questline. You will get a housecarl with every house you buy.Depending on your morality, you can use her to complete the daedric quest which requires the sacrifice of one of your followers.

Housecarl comes with the Thane title, not with a house.

In all cities, except Whiterun, buying house is a prerequisite for becoming a thane, meaning, you can purchase house and stop right there and not apply for the thane title. That way you will get no housecarl.

I wish they would stand outside your door or something a sentinel to watch over you or something, not all of my characters wish for the housecarls to be in my house with me all the time.

I had this same problem. After hours of looking, I found that I could do nothing but kill her.

By the way, if you do it correctly out in the wilderness you won't get a bounty and it won't go on your record.

My Lydia actually does that. That's because I spawned her (she would not appear in Dragonsreach nor in Breezy) in the middle of the road.

I asked her to guard the outside of Breezehome (ie. "Wait here.") If she decides to come inside, I ask her to wait outside again.

It got even creepier when she would always sit on the chair next to my bed and watch me sleeping. Altough incredibly hot (most probably due to way too much makeup), I was somehow glad when she did not survive the latest Dragon attack.

But I think telling her to wait outside of your house should do the trick as long as you don't hire other followers, if you do that, she will probably go back inside.

Yeah, you can get her to live someplace other than your house.

Spoiler

If you progress far enough in the main quest, you can assign certain followers to join the Blades. They then treat the Blades Sanctuary as home. This is meant to give you a place to easily swap out followers, but its also a non-evil way to get house carls out of your house.

Of course, the other option is to marry her and then tell her to move into some other house you own.

Go http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Houses_(Skyrim)#List_of_purchasable_houses.

No, it's not possible to put them up for rent. Though one could pretend the housecarls are renting them, if you were into roleplay.

If you're wanting a daily income I suggest getting married. Your spouse gives you 100 gold a day.
