PSP2

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 9:22 am

So Sony just announced the PSP2 :celebration: Looks like it's gonna support 3G and wifi, has a 5 inch OLED screen, and launch lineup with heavy hitters like KIllzone, Resistance, Uncharted, and Littlebig Planet. Anybody else picking this up on launch day?

Looks awesome, but I didn't really end up using my PSP much, so will probably pass on this.

Yeah. The PSP developer support dried up pretty quick, but I'm willing to give Sony another chance. They did do pretty well for going toe to toe with Nintendo though.

I was hoping the OLED was a rumour, why couldn't Sony get at least S-LCD? Sony makes S-LCD, don't they?

Iirc samsung and Sony make slcd together but samsung has the major in the corporation. I'm fine with the OLED screen but battery life could be problem with this kind of visual horsepower.

I've never owned a PSP and this seems like a decent reason to finally play some of the games I've been missing out on. I might just buy this.

So it might double as a phone at some future point, from what I gather. That's neat. Trophies, flash card games, possible PS3 streaming in the future... Neat. Really neat.
But what I really want is this not to turn my hands into claws for a few hours after playing. I hope those dual anologues help.

Meh, currently if I had to choose between this and the 3DS there's very little that would sway me to get this. The 3DS has the huge benefit of being backwards compatible with DS games, while the PSP2 is starting fresh with it's game library. Graphics may be a lot better on the PSP2 but I couldn't care less about that really. It's a shame they couldn't have made this an actual phone, instead of leaving that to the Xperia Play. They really dropped the ball on that one IMO.

But the 3DS ditches GBA games, just like the DS did with GB ones, and thus you'd still be left with less games and the need to keep another handheld. I don't see anything bad there, so it's fine with the NGP, too. ^_^

Don't think I will get one, the last game I played on the PSP was Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, and I wasn't keen enough to get Portable 3.

I'm not saying it's necessarily a detriment for the NGP, but you have to admit that the 3DS being able to play every single DS game released is a pretty big incentive. Plus, it's a bit much to ask for the 3DS to support 2 generation old games, when all the NGP had to support was last generation games. But I understand why they wanted to ditch the UMD. It's a shame they couldn't just incorporate them both though.

It sounds awesome, but I only really used my PSP when travelling, and I don't know is it worth splashing out on this. I'll probably wait for a price drop.

Ah, this I do understand. ^_^
I've not seen it mentioned anywhere, but I guess downloadable PSP titles will still work on the NGP. At least that's something. Still, not all titles are available that way and Go! owners are rightfully mad about this.

I belive the 3DS introduce GB and GBA games too (although maybe it was just GB stuff), with the upcoming DSiWare virtual console thingy. But granted, you will need to buy the game again and can't use the old cartridge.

Any word if the NGP is backwards compatible with PSP games bought on PSN?

I assume at some point R&D just gave up completely on making it fit in your pocket.

It's still smaller than the Classic Gameboy. :hehe:

OLED supposedly gives a better battery life since it doesn't require a backlight.

Link please? All I found was http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2011-01/27/sony-psp-2-ngp

I never got a PSP and I'm not exactly interested in the 3DS. So this might be a day 1 purchase if I have the money. Especially if Sony makes some good tweaks between then and now.

Sweet. Is it backwards compatible? In other words, will it play UMDs? I wouldn't want to buy a PSP2 only to discover I can't play my PSP games on it. Not that I'd be able to afford a PSP2 any time soon, of course. I bet the price tag will be almost as much as a PS3! :o That new Nintendo hand-held costs more than a Wii!

Guess I'll wait for someone to break their screen or something and try to put it on Craigslist for cheap, and then I can repair it.

I hope regular PSP games are still made, or at least new games that have support for only one anolog stick. There are already so few good games for the PSP, it'd svck if no new games supported the controls.

With the touch screen, do you think they might port Okamiden to the PSP2?

EDIT: Holy crap, it has a built-in GPS? Front and rear cameras (Isn't that a little excessive)? Quad-core CPU? :dead: This thing is going to cost a fortune!

Damn, sometimes I hate Sony. I want to play the games, but I don't want to spend a fortune on a gizmo half of which's features I'll never use nor want to use.

No, they save that money on the UMD drive. UMD seems to be mostly dead by now. Let's blame the skullduggery of those blasted not-swashbuckling imitations of our noble kin, yarr.
