I put tape over my compass.

You use the map.
Hmmm... Underwhelming. I use the compass as, well, a compass. I'm not going to keep tabbing back to the map just to see if I'm walking in the right cardinal direction. Quest markers can be turned off by unticking the quest in your journal.

I just don't look directly at it when I don't want to, that way what ever symbols are on there are just sorta blurs that I choose to ignore.

You still get the icons for places with the compass though. It's not that hard to keep a general direction in this game and you don't have to check the map often.

I almost have the map memorized..

Same here (the lay of the land I mean). If I spy a rabbit trail or a hidden foot path I just gotta follow it, I end up wandering around and forget all about what ever quest I'm doing and I'd rather travel cross country there's more to see then on the main road.

Side tracking is what makes it more exciting, not knowing where you'll end up or what you'll find :)

It would be nice to have that option :) But the tape doesn't do jack to the tv so I can live with it :P

I turned off the compass recently too; it's made for some fun adventures so far from relying on it less. On a quest to raid a bandit lair, I ended up rescuing some Argonian in a Falmer cave along the way and brought him along.

The cave was supposed to lead somewhere close to the destination, but somehow I got hopelessly lost and must've passed the same wizard fort like four times, so I tried to claivoyance my way to it and it ended leading us to Windhelm. On the second attempt, I got to a tower in the right area and thought "this must be the place", but it turned out to be an Imperial base, and clairvoyance started saying "there's no path to the target."

The guy must've been starting to wonder if there ever was any bandit lair and questioning his choice in adventuring companions by then, but we found it soon after, right next to that fort.

If I could only loose the compass then the feeling of being lost would rise 10 fold.Believe it or not, it is possible to navigate using the position of the sun and stars in the game this is what helps me forget about the compass( unless I have active quests).

I think it's funny that, in quite a lot of threads, people's idea of fun in Skyrim often includes removing or limiting options that the game itself provides because it does not offer some of the things that it should have.

Why is this funny? It's part of the whole reason mods exist for this game/series.

I have NO idea how to read direction and time from looking at the position of the sun, and the shadows it casts. Creds to those who can :P But as Ar-Feiniel said, just use the map, and one will have a clue as to where you are :)
Personally, I like exploring, so even if I am on a quest, I really don't pay any attention to the compass and just stroll off to see what I find :P I tend to forget I'm on a quest and enter god knows how many caves and stuff along the way :P And then suddenly I look a bit higher up on the screen and "Wow, there's a compass! Oh [censored], that's right, I was on my way over there...". :P Good times, good times :)

What kind of tape? If it's a double-sided tape? Duct tape? Silicone Rubber Tape? Heat Shrink Tape, for example, is not recommended for TV's ...

Sun rises in the east, sets in the west. Shadows I can use to judge time  And I don't really know if they put in a north star or not I just picked the brightest one that was due north and made that my north star.

It's funny because now instead of being just players we are also having to take on the role of designers.

Because Bethesda didn't do a better job with the quest log and toggle options, we now have to step in and fix that mistake.

I'm an outdoorsman through and through. Do a lot of hunting, fishing etc.... When you spend as much time in the woods as I do you need to know your stuff just to be prepared, 90% of my country is wilderness so it's a big pass time.

Yep that's hockey tap, almost as useful as duct-tap but duck-tap is the handyman's tool
( unless you have seen or watched the "Red Green" show you might not get my joke.)
