race of the dragonborn

Post » Sun Jun 17, 2012 2:43 am

i was wondering, would it makes sence for mer and beast races to be dragon born? it just seems strange to see an elf or argonian to be the dragonborn.

It would make sense, I'm not sure why you think they can't be dragonborn. Just because the Dovahkiin in the trailer is a Nord doesn't mean all dragonborns are.

Not really, dragon born doesn't mean a dragon was a part of your conception (that's a funny image) it just means that you are given a gift from the gods to learn shouts more easily and kill dragons.

Being dragonborn is being born with the soul of a dragon. While it culturally have been limited to be of major importance to the Nords and Imperials, all races makes sense as a dragonborn since it is Akatosh who decides who becomes one.

im not saying they cant, im saying it just seems fairly uncommon and different to see mer and beast races with the gift that is found on men

but i bet in the actual lore he will probably be nord. unless they do it like the neverine in morrowind. but the dragonborn is bigger then the neverine in my opinion. he has to conquer tamerial form an empire and be a major figurehead.so hell probably be a nord in the end though. just my opinion

Technically speaking, anyone can be a Dragonborn, since the gift is given from Akatosh, and it basically means someone born with the soul of a dragon.

Skyrim, however, seems to be written primarily for a Nord player in mind (although there's wacky hijinks you can pull in the Thalmor Embassy if you're a High Elf/Altmer, and there's some style points for an Argonian dragonborn.)

I think "a gift to (hu)man" isn't an accurate description. I think it is more of a "gift to mortals", which would also make sense since dragons are technically immortal unless killed by a dragonborn or another dragon.

The dragonborn gift should only be for the human races. Not the filthy beasts. Or the altmer and orcs. My one dunmer build was awesome so I have no qualms with them. I wouldn't care as much about this if in TES lore there was one. But where is that proof?

There are tons of Dovahkin whose race is completely unknown. If you don't know them all, how can you say that they were all humans?

This is the one very large aspect I hate about Skyrim. It's written with a Nord player in mind, it even goes as far as to make you feel not right if you choose to be any other race. You don't feel as through you fit in with the Dragonborn plot if you're playing a RedGuard or a Altmer.

I never had that feeling while playing Oblivion, it's a real shame.

thats why u prove the of world tamerial wrong that u are the true dragonborn no matter what race.just like in morrowind the ashlanders didnt think u were the neverine so u had to prove it to them. and in the end, they accepted u no matter what race. same thing here

considering that dragon 'blood' is a gift bestowed by the gods, it makes sense for any race to be one
it isnt a strictly inherited trait, even though it can be passed down like it was in the septim line

In the actual lore the Dragonborn's race/gender etc. etc. will not be known.

How is the game written for a Nord player character? My first character was a Nord, and I enjoyed it because I enjoyed getting into the whole Viking thing, but I can't see how any other race is made to feel they don't fit in the game.

You could say they're somewhat alien to Skyrim the country, sure, but then they are somewhat alien, just as everybody except Dark Elves are somewhat alien to Morrowind, and so forth. Most games are gonna have a majority of the characters be human anyway, because the fantasy races should be somewhat exotic.

as a cat you can freely walk through towns.. no matter what.

play dunmer. go windhelm. especially talk to rolf and have him making hate speeches about dunmer completely ignoring what you are.

play a mage, ask in inns where you can learn magic and get insulted 90% of the time.

maybe you have to play more, but for me it is pretty obvious and i have over 600 hours in. my examples are actually quiet bad, because the real hints are way more random.

Maybe that's the whole "Skyrim is the homeland of the Nords" thing?
With the whole civil war going on, I'd be surprised if the land's major race WASN'T favored.
