Random Crashes are driving me up a wall.

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:30 am

I'm sure you guys hear this problem a lot, but for the past two days I've been getting random crashes at different intervals on my system with the game. Sometimes the game runs for 30 minutes other times it runs for 1 hour and this morning it even ran for 3 hours. The crashes are getting old and my patience is wearing thin. Not to mention when it does crash it will cometimes kill my saves (even though i save often) whatever i do in between saves it erases so this causes me to save just about every 5 minutes out of paranoia. Now i know it will be awhile before someone can solve my problem or release a patch for said problem but im at my wit's end on this one. Thank you for when this gets read.

When I used to get random CTD or game freezes with Fallout I went thru all the normal .ini fixes and codec hacks which changed how often it crashed but the end solution ended up being having air conditioning on in my room. When my room was really cold the game didn't crash. As a side note. I didn't have any crashes on XP or Win7 x64 until I upgraded my vid card/ audio card. When I upgraded my vid card I installed the HD texture pack and tweaked the .ini to squeeze all the quality out my card could seemingly handle which is what caused it to overheat. Usually when it's an overheat issue my games don't crash, instead my system crashes but for some nice reason Fallout3 just crashed.

Maybe something in there is useful.

Turning down some detail level will always make the game run smoother, that's for sure. Reducing water reflection, amount of shadows & distance lod can definitely make your experience more enjoyable.

However I'm not sure this has got do anything with game ctd's. In F3, those were mainly due to mod incompatibility issues & loading orders conflicts. At least in my case.

Patience, patience for the future patches, don't forget the game has only been out 3 days :)

Thanks for the tips, but I hate that reasoning. L4D2 worked the day it came out, Bioshock 2 worked the day it came out, hell even Civ V mostly worked.

Of course, I totally agree. I certainly don't condone the fact that we have to wait for patches for the game to work properly. Once put on the market, a game, as any other product is supposed to work straight away.

What I'm saying is that the future patches will make everything more stable. I don't believe everyone is having ctd issues, so specific solutions will have to be found.

Cheers

2 words:

Gambryo engine.

This thing needs to be led out behind the shed and put out of it's misery! I'll dig the grave!

It's a buggy engine, always has been. Some have no issues, were others are plagued with them.

Sometimes you'll get a full day of play, then the next day you're lucky if last for 30 minutes.

I see the same issues I've seen since Morrowind. (It was slightly updated for Oblivion/fallout.)

So, I refer you, and the powers that be to reread my third sentence and hope the powers that be listened for future TES and Fallout games.

I just don't get it, Video should use DirectX sounds should use DirectX Sound, hardware/OS souldn't make the game any less stable. It's not like they wrote their own OpenGL engine. But even that would probably be better than this. Guess they should stick to Java in the future.

Oh yeah and get ready for BRINK, lol

Constant crashing here too, but for me it's more like every 15 minutes. I haven't tried it yet today so maybe the newest patch fixed that?

Update: I've updated my video card driver. It crashed after about an hour of gameplay...lately its been acting like i alt-F4ed out of it. No error message at all just shoots me back to the desktop. Heres hopin that they patch the game soon. Cause i think it has something to do with XP. Oh and that latest patch didn't do anything...If anything thing it allowed me to have a little longer sessions but i still think its crashing randomly.

Ok the reason turning of music helps a ton is gamebryo doesnt handle the music playing all that well specialy when it swiches songs or you step on something odd or a pc tries to talk or or or ...With the music off the engine handles the rest much better... Dont worry they fixed it in fallout 3 and ob they will eventualy nail the bug again.

As for the water... the water is rather odd in that it effects the game even with no water around. Just turn it all the way down as frankly the water isnt all that exciting anyway.

No its not the radio its the background ambnient music. But ya you prolly should only play the radio after you have saved for the day and just want to listen to it. If you turn music all the way down it does NOT effect radio volume.

The crashes see at least to me when the game tries to clear the buffers

I'll get a little lag , then it starts to even out ....boom

my cherrios are all over the floor.

like it's looking at the RAM STACK and not finding the information.

Hmm, I haven't had a single crash except for the freeze on game exit.

Here's what I have and have done so far:

Specs:
-Windows Vista 32 SP2
-AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+
-EVGA NVIDIA 9800 GT
-3 GB DDR2 RAM
-5200RPM HD (I believe that's what I have)
-Using MOBO Sound

What I've done:
-Turned off Steam cloud, and run game in offline mode
-Use Gamebooster, also defragged game file using Gamebooster
-Used the d3d9.dll because I had the npc lag issue
-Uninstalled all the audio codecs I could in add/remove programs and installed Vista Codec (My PipBoy radio wasn't working, this fixed it. Also appeared to fix my freezing when exiting the game).
-I believe I'm using the 257.21 NVIDIA drivers
-I disabled auto save and do not use quick saves/loads, all manual saves
-Running Fraps for s**ts/giggles
-Running game on "high" settings w/ view distances turned up and water settings and shadow setting lowered a bit. 2X AA and 4X or 6X AF. Resolution is 1440 X 900
-Using the .ini mouse acceleration fix

EDIT: Forgot about this: I am running my system w/ an almost clean boot, all startup programs disabled and all services disabled, minus windows services, steam service, and video driver.

Now, I believe I should be getting higher framerates than I am currently (I'm using identical settings to what I use in FO3). But, the game is playable for me.

Having a nice little crash problem as well , however only when a NPC acts other then the ones in tow (the company npc`s) shoot a npc crash , a npc runs at me crash , a npc shoots crash , talking to npc crash, anything and everything that has to do with a npc will crash the game , trying to find out how to fix this....

just tried to fix it by doing the ini fix , the game keeps resetting the file back to what it was. (attempt fix 15 http://segmentnext.com/2010/10/19/fallout-new-vegas-errors-crashes-freezes-fixes) i am pretty pissed about this , more so since i can not return the game for a refund.

14 hours in here and no crashes... One bugged quest (oh my papa) is the only issue I'm having at this point. Pretty good for a gamebryo game on only day 3. Keep the patches coming!!

I'm having the same problem, it is completely at random with no rhyme or reason. I have turned down everything, done fresh install, turned off or uninstalled all "background" programs, nothing seems to work.
