Starcraft and Age of Empires 2. Many late night LAN games with both.

I play a lot of Medieval 2 but mostly quick battles nowadays. I just don't have the time to play a campaign which can drag on into the hundreds of hours. The modding community for it is amazing, there is a Lord of the Rings mod, a Warhammer mod and Stainless Steel which is what I use.

RTS is by far my favorite genre. I have been playing them ever since the first Warcraft. My hands down favorite is the first Dawn of War followed closely by BFME II with the Special Extended Edition mod (an overhaul mod that rebalances, reskins, adds units, slows down the game [build times etc.] and scales the big monsters waaay up where they should be, all of which make the battles waaay more epic). I like the Total War series just as much, if not more than Dawn of War, but I don't consider it all that RTSish.

I will always have a place in my heart for Starcraft. I still play it to this day. I was a little disappointed in Starcraft 2 because of big issues I had with presentation, but then again I'm not that into games like I once was, so its understandable if the new stuff these days doesn't really pique my interest.

R.U.S.E., Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, The anno series (although I don't think I've ever actually finished a full sandbox game), Rise of Nations, All good games in my opinion.

All-time favourites of mine are Warcraft 3, Supreme Commander, Age of Empires II, Age of Mythology and Dawn of War. Plus all the expansions of those games, Except Forged Alliance and The Titans, because they svck.

And since a few weeks now, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neXHcn0lV9A, which is pretty much a whole new game. A shame that the 6+ players maps don't work yet.

Also, guys, I also love Rome: Total War, but it really isn't an RTS :P

Hehe. :P

But seriously, there is a difference... even if it sounds trivial. Wikipedia has it right, classing them all as turn-based strategy / real-time tactics. There's really nothing "RTS" about them.

Well, just cause it has the name, my favorite is Halo Wars. :) Otherwise my favorite is probally Warcraft III, probally because it is one of the few I have played, and I played it the most.

Pikmin!

Pikmin counts, right? :P

If so, then it is my favorite. Happy birthday Pikmin 1! If not, well, I guess Starcraft 2.

I didn't even know there was a difference until you brought it up, but I understand now :P

Honestly, I didn't mind Halo Wars, though I know lots of people hated it either because of the controls or because it was Halo

The only game I've played that's kinda like a RTS is Tom Clancy's EndWar...I miss that game I need to play again but I need a new bluetooth headset.

Maybe I just didn't put enough time into it to see what it fully had to offer. I only played it for 10-15 hours at most. During that time it seemed very one-dimensional, with a rush for resources being the only viable strategy for winning... and almost always being assured victory very early on if I was quick. Perhaps i'm too used to slower paced RTS games which can go on for hours and hours before someone finally gains the upper hand needed to win.

I still have the game lying around somewhere, so maybe i'll give it another try when i'm bored.

I completelt understand what you are saying based on your experience with the game. But as you put more time and learn some of the build timings you start to understand why its such a good game when you start to counter the opponents builds.

If you want to see it played at what might was well be the highest current skill level, the grand finals between the last two players of a 3-month-long season are tonight at 7:15 PM PST on http://www.twitch.tv/naslseasontwo

The Total War series even if it's a mixture of real time and turn based strategy.

Being my first RTS ever played back in middle school. I say Command and Conquer: Generals. I did enjoy Starcraft II also, I think it is a great RTS.

Would have to say the original Starcraft + Broodwar along with the oldschool Command And Conquer Red Alert game+expansions. Haven't really found an RTS game that tops those games to be honest even though i've tried.

Age Of Empire Series.

Halo Wars.

And every other single Mid-evil era RTS out there. There’s not one I haven’t enjoyed.

StarCraft Series.

Command and Conquer Series.

Red Alert.

Dune 2000 (An older game! Loved it so much!) We must control the spice. Whoever controls the spice controls Dune. There are no rules for engagement! I miss this game so,so much!
