Rebuilding Helgen

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 5:48 pm

So I have 114,000 gold on my main character and the thought just occured to me that I could use a TON of that gold that's just sitting around in a chest in my house to rebuild the city of Helgen.

I forget the name of the main village in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, but it's the first one you go to with Ezio's uncle. One of the coolest little side features of that game was the ability to completely rebuild the village. Every time you made an upgrade or restored a shop or restored the Thieves Guild and the Courtesans Guild, the city would become nicer. The water puddles and cracked stone walkways and buildings would be removed and repaired, and more NPCs would be present walking around. This added nothing strategically to gameplay or anything like that because it's not meant to, but it was a fun little side thing to dump your plentiful money into and the aesthetic results of it all were very satisfying.

Now just imagine doing that with Helgen, in a game that is designed around the premise of being an RPG. Being able to completely rebuild the city of Helgen would feel incredibly satisfying in my opinion. Anyone else agree?>

Yes, I liked that in Brotherhood. A city destroyed, a city rebuilt. It would have been a nice money sink. Perhaps you could make into something different, such as a town like it was, or perhaps a den of vice, like a new home for the Thieve's Guild? Or a military outpost?

I have always suggested that they add this as a micelanious quest line into the next DLC, though I didn't think of the idea of having to pay for it. I jsut thought it would be nice to get the Bandits out of there so the Jarl could rebuild it. This is a pretty good idea to get rid of all the excess gold, seen as once you own all the houses.... there really is not much need for mony at that point. What is the end game though?? Do you then govern Helgen?? Or does it become a private compound for you and your followers?? I liked the idea of getting it rebuilt to add additional side quests once residents move back in.

Yeah this would be a great idea. And maybe make you like the Jarl of Helgen? The thing that annoys me about the civil war quests,is that after it finishes you get no real recognition. This way after you finish the story on either side, you could get a nice little bonus: rebuild the city and its yours:D

The bolded part is what I had in mind. It would open up a few more little side quests, nothing major obviously, but something that you could do to get the city back on its feet.

My idea would be to rebuild it slowly. Instead of just having the option to BAM RESTORE HELGEN FOR 100,000 GOLD it would be more like first you start out by building a Longhouse and barracks, and then that opens up a quest to clear the surrounding area of bandits so that you can insure that the city doesn't suffer from raids before it's even rebuilt. Then after that you rebuild the houses so you can move the citizens in, and then you can rebuild the shops and the forge and stuff like that.

The only thing that would have to be worked out is how you would go about choosing a jarl and his court, because it's not like you could be the jarl or anything. I wouldn't really know how to go about doing something like that, but once you had that in place and figured out, the citizens that moved there could start buying the property for sale and setting up shops, money that was generated to the city, which would be awesome if the game had the type of economic system that we were all lead to believe it would have.

More than likely it would have to be way more simplified but it was fun to think about nonetheless.

Why couldn't you be the Jarl? There's no law somewhere that says the Jarl has to sit around on his throne doing nothing all day is there?

i definitely always thought that it would be great if the world change with the character's progress, but i'd imagine it would be extremely hard to do.

I'll build my own theme park, with black-jack, and hokers. In fact, forget the theme park

lol yeah, I would think there would be a law like that. Maybe it isn't written, but I imagine the citizens of Helgen would harbor a bit of resentment towards you for rebuilding a city for them and then just peacing out to go kill dragons or something.

How many apartment complexes can function properly with an absentee landlord? Multiply that responsibility tenfold and you'll get what it's like to see a city function without a leader.

The whole job of a Jarl is to govern his hold. You can't do that if you're hardly ever there.

I would think it would be like how
Spoiler
When you become Sheogorath in the Shivering Isles
and you could just take off whenever you want and that's a much bigger responsibility than being a Jarl. Just my thoughts though. I never really see the Jarls doing much of anything but loafing around looking drunk. I mean the Jarl of Falkreath is basically like, "I don't have to do anything!"

There are 9 holds with 9 Jarls. Unless they wrote in a storyline where you overthrew one of them you can't be a Jarl. Jarls are like governors. You can be governor or Utar but not governor of salt lake city.
Give it a different name like... Not sure what would be appropriate but lord or something.

I like this idea a lot. Wouldn't want to be a Jarl, but a statue in my honour in the middle of town would not be overkill.

You CAN'T be jarl of helgen so it's a good job you don't want to be isn't it
Unless you want to be jarl of falkreath hold where the settlement of helgen is located

We spent the entirety of Oblivion asking for the ability to rebuild Kvatch. Ultimately, mods gave it to us, but this time I'd really like an official DLC to rebuild Helgen.

Actually, now I do want to be Jarl. That's my new goal. Can't is but a word. Helgen will be the capital of a new hold and I will be its Jarl.

Does this involve talking land from whiterun hold, falkreath hold and the rift by force? Because that would be cool. Tho if ulfick couldn't do it with an army then would be hard to do it on your own.

To the people invoking Kvatch, I should point out that rebuilding Helgen would probably be easier to code. Good idea for a DLC though methinks.

The idea of being able to rebuild Helgen, and perhaps even be it's Jarl, I think would be some pretty awesome DLC content.
