Refugee journal game

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:45 pm

Alright, I just wanted to try a little something. We have a game for guns, and attachments, but I thought that the Brink forums might be mature enough to not completely ruin this game.

Rules are simple:
-Every post is 1 day of the refugee's life, (yes, its one of those games)
-Should you get ninja'd and they take your day, simply look to the right of your post, and see what number is there.
-The story is about a refugee just getting to the ark, no resistance is started... yet. Security is present at the time, but is mainly police force.
-The refugee WILL NOT join any side, it is from a spectators view.
-If the refugee ends up joining a side, within a certain amount of time, something must cause him/her to leave the side they have joined, so that this remains a spectators story.

I tried searching for anything like this and only got the gun/attachment game.
My apologies in advance if this somehow breaks the forums rules.

Day 1: I've just reached this ARK, as they call it. The world has flooded and we've all fled to this floating wonderland. I've been directed to someplace called "Container City", it looks absolutely terrible it is seriously, a city made up of nothing but containers, tarps, scaffoldings, and I swore I saw a machine gun nest above someones house. Is this the normal thing to do here?

and now its up to you guys to tell the story of this person.

Day 2

Boy i am glad food is not too crummy here... though i do hear people fighting with the security, but crimes are still on the low. Container City seems to be getting worse with more people coming here, with today a ship of 100 new people arriving. nothing really new today, still trying to find work and a way to keep food on the table, money is slowly being depleted.

Day 3: Met the guy with that machine gun on his roof today.
actually a pretty cool dude, he came from Russia and has two kids, I didn't see them in his house though, which was odd. I didn't want to ask him anything about the machine gun, lest he use it on me as an explanation.
I start work tomorrow, not yet sure what they're gonna have me do.
guess I'll have to wait and see. hope it's nothing too difficult

Day 4

Some rumors going around about someone burglarizing houses up in the Security District. I hear the Security's gonna come down hard on us, which means more guards and longer hours. So far, I'm wishing we had stayed out there. But the kids seem to like it, and my job as an engineer isn't too bad. I bet we'll get through this whole mess sooner or later.

EDIT: Dang you person who took day three before I could respond

Take that! I just decided he was an Engineer AND that he had kids!

Day 6

The home is starting to look a little better, still beat up, but better. Planning on meeting up with some of the other guys around here to introduce myself. Just got hired as an engineer by some random guy I met outside, going to check on the details tomorrow.

Day 7

A huge drought just hit and supplies are almost unheard of. I thought they were scarce before. I start my job tomorrow but I don't know what kind of place its going to be. Security seem to be looking around here a lot lately.......what are they looking for?

I hope its cool that he has kids because I added them in. Personally I think it adds another element of interest to the story and may even help it out.

DAY 8

Heard some gunfire very close by last night. Jack and Rebbecca, my kids, fell asleep an hour or so after I finally calmed them down from the scare. I however did not sleep much, which is great because I had a very long day of work and it was very hazardous. On my walk the Russian man is typically up on his roof with his gun but he was not in his spot and his "house" seemed silent. I asked his neighbors but they looked incredibly paranoid and refused to answer. Something is very wrong with this place and I'm not sure what to make of it. I fear for my kids, I have nobody I can trust or know to take care of them when I'm not around.

Day 9

Still no word on the Russian man. Was he taken by the Security? Was he what they were looking for? Was he the one shooting last night? I can't think straight do to another sleepless night. My minds a blur and things are happening so quick. I hope it calms down soon. Rebecca scraqed her knee pretty bad on some of this rusted metal and needed medical help. Too bad the hospital looks similar to abandoned apartments back from the mainland. I got to try to get some sleep, boss says we are starting something that will change the ark forever.......

Day 10

Jack woke up crying in the middle of the night. Before I ask what's wrong, I hear something like thunder far off in the distance.

I don't like any of this. I think he might be missing his sister. Rebecca had to stay overnight in case the infection developed into something much worse. I'm more worried about the fact that the thunder is in the general direction of the hospital. In addition, the boss wants us to build barricades.

Barricades.

We were handed blow torches and heavy-duty gloves and told to get any scrap metal lying around to weld makeshift nests, while some of the bigger guys, armed with dilapidated guns, went out to seek some machine guns for the barricades. I'm not going to repair the guns, thankfully, but I don't like what we have to do. It means there's something big brewing, and eventually down the line we will end up getting assaulted by the Security. Sooner or later they're going to hand me a gun and tell me to defend our land.

I can't do that. I have kids. I keep hearing talk about how the Security will take anybody, even civilians, and forcefully question them about what's going on around here. They know because they found a dog tag lying around. It was an ex-military sergeant who threw a Molotov at a patrol boat the other night. Some of the guys got anything that would burn and had a ceremony for him. The thought of being taken into custody and never seeing my kids again is a scary thought. I don't have a gun to defend myself. And if I did, firing shots would alert everyone, and what I did would be taken as a hostile offense. Then the Security would have every right to kill me.

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. It's nothing I like. I can't afford to affiliate with either side, but neither am I going to live long if I stick with nothing.

Day 11.

Rebbecca is still in the Hospital. Nurse says she isn’t doing too well and medical supplies are so limited. More gunfire last night. Talked to the neighbors again before work: they still said very little. All I found out was the name of the Russian: Ivan Tarasov, but he is more commonly known as "The Sweat". Nobody seems to know his whereabouts. I would have asked more, but I didn't want to be late to work and they looked as if they wouldn't say anymore. Security is cracking down harder than ever. People are just disappearing with no warning. I’m working hard at my job: fixing anything they tell me. I can tell things are becoming very desperate around here. They’re starting to use anything and everything they can get their hands on: dissembling old tires and using them as armor, attaching old soda cans to pistols as silencers. This place is a total mess, and things are going to get real bad if this continues.

Day 12

The first two barricades are completed. The work is strenuous and frightening. As we worked we kept hearing gunshots still quite a distance away, and an unmarked helicopter flew right by us. I assumed survivors. They assumed Security thinking we were too stupid to suspect an unmarked helicopter flying at a suspiciously low altitude, surveying the region for quite some time before leaving. Either way, we aren't able to handle either.

I took a visit to the hospital when I got off my shift. They've used a few epi-pens on Rebecca to keep her going until better supplies arrive. If and when they do. There's no place that manufactures them except the medical facilities in the mainlands. A team of soldiers dropped by the hospital, and promised Rebecca personally that they would find some top-quality equipment for her. This was probably the first time I endorsed an armed maneuver. I don't side with these men, but I have literally no one else to turn to.

Some of the kids are working around us, doing little jobs like hoisting remnants of girders or cranes or cleaning up potentially dangerous zones, and I'd hate to see them suffering just like Rebecca because they don't have proper gear. There's so few scraps of clothing around, some people have resorted to extremes. Many walk bare-footed. Some have made a joke of the entire situation and made sandals out of any scrap metal left behind. I have too many holes in my shoes, but I got some sheet metal and more malleable strips of metal and tried to reinforce Jack's shoes. It's not good, but it'll do.

When Jack fell asleep, there was a loud commotion going on outside. I headed out of our shipping container to see what was the hubbub. Some soldiers had come from the Shipyards, requesting support because they were losing a vital fight. Hundreds of our forces headed out with them. I had never seen so many guns or so many angry people in my life.

If the war wasn't where we were, it would find a way to do so. That squad had been war's harbinger.

I really do think I need a gun. Just something I can defend myself with when worst comes to worst. But I can't bring myself to go by the armory, lest they think I'm a volunteer. And if I insist that I need it for self-defense, I'm worried they'll falsely accuse me of treason and betrayal. I can't afford to do that. I can't get a weapon anywhere else. Unless Ivan had others. I don't even think he took his machine gun, but I can't carry that.

Day 13

Things have escalated fast. I heard yelling and chanting outside our home last night. It kept us all up, but I dare not go out. It was the armed men, they were rallying, burning, and rioting in protest against the Security. More and more are joining their cause, but as desperate as I am to get what I need for my children, I won't associate myself with armed thugs. The Security are just people like us, just doing their job. I'm sure they, and whoever runs this place, are willing to listen to reason despite all the things they've done. Hell, I bet those men joined the Security to get out of this dump.

A few fine people in the slums have fashioned rudimentary clothing and are giving it out for free to anyone who needs it. I'm not sure the Security will be too happy with this, but I don't care. I need what I need.

I found something to defend my family with earlier this morning. It's just a rusty old pistol that was abandoned next to some leaflets, but it will have to do. I just hope I never have to use the damn thing.

Day 14

Got home late last night for two reasons. One I had to work late because tensions continue to escalate around here at an alarming rate. Two is that I went into Ivans house to see if his stuff was still there. Before this started I would have never considered entering into another mans house without permission but to stay alive I had to, and he was long gone anyway. His gun lay next to an overturned table with some rotting food beside it. It seemed rather odd that the gun was still their at all but that was perhaps the gun was incredibly heavy and bulky. Still I had to think of something to do with this thing. I did my best to pull it into a corner and threw a bit of tarp over it just in case anyone else was thinking about what I was doing. I visited Rebbecca in the hospital again and on my way out I bumped into two of the soldier guys that said they would help out my little girl. They seemed far nicer than the normal soldiers I ran into on a daily basis. I brought up the topic of the gun I had in exchange for another and a few other things. They talked amongst themselves and I heard them mention extra money and water rations in exchange for something, the gun maybe? They said they would come speak to me within a day or two at night about this gun I had and to keep quiet about it. I know I already have that pistol but I'm not even sure it will work properly if I need it and it seems increasingly likely I will.

Day 15

I overheard people talking about a russian man that was going to be tried for supporting the rebels, i wondered if it was Ivan, but i had to continue working. The boss wanted us to make some strange looking stands and boxes, i am thinking they are MG mounts and Ammo cans. I am starting to wonder by working for this guy am i helping the rebels? am I going to be taken away by the Security? I need the money to get supplies for Rebbecca and jack, so should I keep working and risk being seen as a rebel or should I find other work?

I haven't seen any other job open up, so i am stuck, still got another night before those soldiers check on me, i hope that the promise made for better medicine for Rebbecca comes through...

Day 16

The two guys I was striking a bargain with dropped by in the middle of the night, and they brought a friend along. In a deep Jamaican accent, the man explains he needs a bigger gun than his assault rifle, though I don't think so. An assault rifle is scary enough. Either way, I show them the MG in Ivan's crate. The men exclaim what a beautiful gun it is and tell the big Jamaican that it would be a worthy weapon. Beautiful or not, it fires more rounds than a pistol can. A rusty old pistol can't do much against such a massive weapon. I hope Ivan doesn't mind, if he is still alive.

In exchange, the two members of the strike team tell me that they've already gotten some better medical supplies delivered. As I anxiously awaited what they found for Rebecca, they told me that in one of the hospital rooms, they found a few tetanus shots. I was very relieved. After thanking me for the gun, one of the guys remembers he had something else to give me. He pulled out three epi-pens from one of his pouches and told me to keep them safe. I thanked him, but he told me no worries and that contributing such a gun to the Resistance would be a fair trade for such valuable resources.

I dropped by the hospital early in the morning to see if they had administered the tetanus shots. The hospital has tried everything--tetanus shots, antibacterial paste, epi-pens--and Rebecca is improving. Again, they want to keep her overnight to make sure that all of the tools worked.

Jack followed me to work today. When asked about what job he should do, I told him to go any useless scrap metal and stash them in our house. In the event that the Security do show up, I need some armor in case I am mistaken for a member of the Resistance. I also realized that in order to use my gun (if it actually does work) I will need some basic weapons training and extra magazines of ammunition. I don't know how I will get those.

It poured all day, and I think the gunfire was intensifying off in the distance. Our boss told us to cover the machine guns with tarps and help in making armor vests for the bigger guys. The work is extremely long and requires more hours than one would think. By the end of our ten hour shifts, only three suits of armor were done. Supplies for armor are hard to find considering that most Resistance members take what they can get and use that for armor. Once I saw a guy with at least five car fenders stacked on his shoulder. Another guy grabbed a giant sewer grate, the top of a stop sign, and a piece of a crane, and fashioned some sort of odd gauntlet out of it. I'm not sure if any of these makeshift armors are effective, but most of these guys come back alive, so perhaps they are.

Off topic: I'm surprised we got this far to be honest. Good job guys!

Day 17 Unfortunately, it's still raining and I've been doing nothing more then talking people around my house, I met this Scottish fellow by the name of Zeke, guy doesn't talk much says hes seen me walking from place to place. I don't know if I can trust this guy, he isn't exactly bulky but hes bigger then me in comparison. After I was done talking to Zeke we parted ways, I had to stop several times to make sure he wasn't behind me. Goddamnit, I'm just being paranoid, I haven't seen this guy anywhere and he already freaks me out.

I hate to be a hypocrite, but when I say this guys lifting things out of Ivan's house, I starting shouting and picked up some bottles and whipped them at these guys. Well.... they didn't like that, one of them ran up the walls with incredible speed, I couldn't help but watch him. Then his buddy knocked me on my ass.

I woke up about half an hour later or so, and I was bleeding, looks like the guy hit me with brass knuckles or something. I looked at my watch to realize the bastard took that too. Well, I headed to the hospital to see Rebecca, but the interns told me that I couldn't, when I asked why a familiar voice told me that they needed to do blood tests to see if the infection was dying or just weakening. I turned and saw Zeke, I wasn't exactly hoping to see him again, but I guess hes been keeping my daughter from getting worse, so I naturally asked how long they planned on keeping her here, its been too damn long. Thats when Zeke said that it will be just a bit longer as they needed supplies, thats when I handed Zeke the supplies I got from that Jamaican and his friends. Zeke questioned where I got these, and I told him that I'm done playing games. He looked a little angry the second I handed him the supplies. Just before I left to go home, he said one last thing, "We'll talk about these sometime", I didn't even look back but those words are starting to make me think as to what that means. Guess I'll find out soon enough.

Day 18

Zeke's words are starting to scare me a bit, after i went back to the hospital to check on 'becca, i saw him talking to a guy in all black. Was he Resistance? was he Security? he looks very scary with the amount of weapons and ammo on him. They seemed to talk for an hour then another man in black joined him, though he didn't seem to speak, but never the less he seemed to be one they listen to. hopefully there isn't any type of raid or something going to happen, well my break is over and i got to get back to work to finish making those armors and MGs... maybe thats what they are talking about, maybe they are thinking about raiding the shop, hopefully that isn't what they are talking about...

well it seems like Zeke isn't too happy about that talk, the two guys in black were walking away and i noticed the one that he was carrying a really big rifle, which seems like overkill, but who knows what those two have been through...

as I was leaving the hospital Zeke gave me a cold look, but it seemed like it wasn't hostile but more of a look of pity, i know that Rebbecca is doing some rehabilitation to make sure she can walk fine, but i can't seem to understand the stare....

Got back to the shop, we had a pretty efficient day, made another 4 armors, i guess i am getting better at this, though i still need to figure out where to get some ammo and training for that pistol i got. Jack seems to have been getting more into what job i am in, i guess he wants to be just like dad, only if Sarah (the wife) was still here, i think it would have made this a lot easier to deal with...

Day 19

I was fiddling with the pistol on my first day off since I started working. It was in pretty poor condition and I wasn't quite sure how to fix it. Luckily I have become friends with some of the people I work with. A few talk of guns a lot so I thought maybe they could help me out. I brought it to one of them and he gave it a look over. He asked me if I had fired it and I told him I had not. He lined up a shot on a can and fired. The shot hit it dead on but he told me not to expect that every time and that it was probably abandoned for a reason. Jack has been keeping busy lately by starting to make me and him some armor. He promised to finish mine first although I told him to focus on his. It actually looks pretty good so far considering its made out of rubber and various bits of metal. The hospital told me Rebbecca can come home tomorrow and when I told her she seemed so happy. The people that work here at the hospital are nice but I can see why she would want to leave. Feeling lucky I decided to go to the "market" district and see if I could find some ammo and an extra clip for the gun with some of my limited rainy day money. I found an old man with a surprising amount of wares. I bought thirty bullets and an extra clip to use for my pistol for a very reasonable price. The night ended with me and Jack up on the not rusty/tarp part of the roof enjoying the stars. For once things were quiet and things seemed better. Barely any gunfire and it was a nice cool night out. A year ago if I had read what I just wrote without knowing it was me I would have assumed this came from the journal of someone in a third world country and would never expect to be this guy. Funny how we can adapt and how things can change so quickly. Life is full of mystery.

Off topic: If you notice mine is a bit more upbeat. The journals were getting bogged down with a bit to much doom and gloom in my humble opinion.

Day 20

I awoke to the smell of smoke in the middle of the night. I awake my kids and got out of the house to see what was going on. A few houses down, Security forces were burning a "home", just a few poles, a tarp, and some scrap metal, down to the ground. It seemed to be that guy I ammo from in the market district. Was he a supporter? People around me starting looking up at the 3rd rim of housing, and a mysterious character was standing there. I could barely see him in his black hoodie and some red rag over his mouth. Seconds later he opened up on the Security and a firefight ensued. People ran like frightened sheep and screams of horror filled the night sky. Then Frank came out his house with a raddy machine gun. I asked him not to shoot at the hooded figure because he might get killed and the wierdest thing happened. He asked me "Why would I shoot the Anger? were allies." I backed away a few steps and wondered what have I gotten myself into........

His wife is dead dude. So please take that out of the journal Italian. Also we are off because someone posted something that wasn't a journal. Just like this post. DO NOT add the wife as alive in further posts she is not, to anyone who may want to contribute.

Off-topic: I really like the idea of this thread. Good work, Blaven. Enjoy a :ninja:

@ItalianDevil: as The R Man said, a guy on the first page made an off-topic post and didn't continue the story. Also, the wife isn't alive.

Day 21

"This entire thing was supposed to end in two weeks!"
"We got a lot of missing guys, they don't want to lose 'em out on the front."

First thing I heard when I got on the job. This is the end of the third week, and I'm still alive, and Jack is still alive, and Rebecca is still alive. I think those are very good odds. Work today was just gathering materials--we are running low on supplies to fortify the MG nests and making heavy armor. As we fished for some good pieces of sheet metal, I find some things that look like knee pads. They're too small to fit my knees, but they would do just fine as shoulder pads. If I find some sheet metal, these could really help a lot.

The aftermath has everyone at high tensions. In addition, two MG nests have been razed and only one MG seems okay. I don't know my way around a gun very well, but judging by how many reports it made last night I'm willing to bet it's done. Surprisingly, we hear no gunfire.

Rebecca is back and quite tired. I am too. Stress has been eroding at my hours of sleep, slowly but surely. You'd think that hard physical labor to keep yourself safe would do wonders for shut-eye, but stress is like caffeine. At least the kids can sleep well.

Work was out earlier today, so I went by the range and tested the gun. I was hesitant to use some of the precious bullets, but a soldier who got really lucky on the front stumbled upon a bucketload (literally) of pistol ammo generously let me use as many magazines as I wanted. After about two magazines I realized why the original owner had left his gun to rot. The inaccuracy was frankly terrible. I need someone to patch up this gun more, but I'm worried the cost will be somewhat extravagant.

The armor, on the other hand, is pretty good. The kids stared with wonder as I tried it on. It's amazing what the remnants of a barrel, some knee pads, two coats of sheet metal, and a messed up tire rim can do. There's still too many areas exposed, but the armor is heavy enough as is. Considering that a lot of other workers wear armor as actual clothing, I'll do the same to get used to the weight. I spend some time polishing it because I'm still awake late into the wee hours of the morning so that I can give whatever's left of my shirt to Jack. Still am surprised there's not much gunfire going on. I like the peace and quiet, but at the same time it's discomforting.

day 22

Rebbeca had to go to hopital and spend one more night for a final check-up .the gunfire was geting nearer and nearer every night. i was laying asleep after a long day of figuring out how i was going to survive on this city. i was awoken by gunfire, screams and breaking glass. i grabbed jack in my arms and ripped off the tarp on top of my container. i hoisted us both up to see up to 6 helicopters flying so low from the ground. i could see a familiar figure sticking the top half of his body out of the chopper. i looked a bit closer and recognised the body as zeke with a tatoo of the security symbol on his arm. after hearing him say ''see you in hell, [censored]!'' he signed a signal to the pilot and immediately a rocket emerged and headed straight for the hospital. after that it was a blank.

Day 23

After what I can only describe as complete terror I swiftly came back to my senses after i saw the rocket fire. It hit the hospital dead on but it was a dud thank god or whoever else is watching over us. Still it was quite the scare and I immediately got Rebbecca out of their and back to the house. I saw now more than ever how dangerous this place was. I don't know if staying here will be any better than out at sea. Either way I think we will all end up dead. It seemed odd that the Security who are peacekeepers would blow up a hospital. I know their have been some fighting going on but that just seemed very odd of them to do. I went to work as usual and everyone looked incredibly paranoid. Any noise from above us caused paranoid looks to snap around at the sky. I decided to build a bunker in my "house" for the kids and I. Last nights scare was far to real for me and I had to keep my kids safe at all costs. I'm going to get jack some kind of weapon as well to use. Not sure how or where I will get it but I have to I feel.
