Repetitive NPC dialogue is realistic

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 2:44 pm

You want each NPC to have 5 hours worth of dialogue?

No, I'd rather they be relegated to simple greetings and acknowledgments. "Good Morning." "Divines smile upon you." "Good Evening." Stuff like that.

But when (for example) Sigurd spouts off "I work for Belethor, over at the General Good's store." every time he's in range of you, it becomes rather maddening.

I don't know why people complain that NPCs keep saying the same stuff over and over.
Anybody who has worked in any kind of customer service or public service type of job would know that people say the same stuff, make the same queries, the same complaints and react in the same way to alot of stuff.
Not just at work. If you live with people you should be seeing alot of repetitive stuff going on. Perhaps even YOU are repetitive when it comes to telling people to do or not to do certain things at certain times...

So they put it in the game too, what's the big deal? What are people expecting? You want each NPC to have 5 hours worth of dialogue? Thats just not realistic.

Are you implying that you regularly receive phone calls from some guy that shouts "I WORK FOR BELETHOR AT THE GENERAL GOODS STORE" and then proceeds to hang up and walk away from the phone?

If so, then it would appear your job is a special kind of hell on earth, and for that, you have my sympathy.

I agree with you there. It's the equivalent of knowing that the only thing the Adoring Fan from Oblivion is going to say is "By Asura!" over and over.

Now that I think of it, the idea of walking up to the Adoring Fan and him going 'Oh, hello.' is kind of funny.

People complain b/c they are spoiled and entitled in today's age.

I went up to a guard after reading the complaints here and found that most have 20+ things to say, with some of them being location specific or skill specific. (At least 20+, probably more)

That is a huge number, especially when voiced. Most characters in BG2 went "Oy yah" when you clicked on them. Most RPGs have stiff as cardboard NPCs still..... even the Witcher doesn't do much with NPCs who aren't story specific and I consider that a fairly good game (1 more than 2).

People need to get over themselves. Skyrim, overall, is a masterpiece in many ways. Because of it's ambition it's going to also have bugs and flaws....

Ever get to the cloud district very often? What am I saying, of course you don't.

This is why repetitive NPC dialogue is bad ^

The guards do have some more dialogue, which is fine. Most people have problems with the characters who have one line only and who you meet often. Nazeem and that soon-to-be-murdered by me woodcutter who works at the general good store are annoying, but we could probably live with it if they weren't always in our way when we walk into Whiterun or come out of Breezehome. It's a bad sentence/too much proximity combo. And so we all want to brutally murder them.

The NPCs should have been like this: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=746

If there's one thing more tiresome than NPC pvssyr, it's people posting mods on this board.

THERE IS A WHOLE FORUM FOR MODS!

No one is complaining about that. People are complaining that other NPC's are saying the exact same thing as every other NPC. Whats the point of having more voice actors and then give them the same lines? i dont understand bethesda

Yeah, no.
Just no.
I would probably rupture a vein or get a stroke if I thought too much about a serious reply to this sort of malarky, because I would get too angry.
So, Im just gonna leave it at:

No.

Nazeem: "Do you get to the cloud district very often? Oh, what am i saying, of course you don't."

I hate to say it, but he is probably one of the most memorable characters in the game. At least he provokes some reaction, as in I want this guy dead, but that's still a reaction.

I'm a postman.
I get alot of
"You're out late aren't you?" The second its getting dark.
"Got anything for number (insert number of the very next door I'm about to post in.)?"
"Lovely weather today."
"Excuse me, do you know where (insert address) is?"
(knocks on door) "Who is it?"

As for me, I say alot of
"You're welcome!"
"No Problem."
Take care!"
"Thanks"
"Cheers"

Repetitive dialogue of shopkeepers when you say hello and they respond is realistic.
Repetitive spam talk of random passer bys you never even looked at, about subjects it makes no sense to talk about, is not realistic... Particularly when it ends up to 95% of the guards having once taken an arrow in the knee...

Then you are customer servicing poorly. I have a family member who is a postal worker. She knows all about the people on her route, her coworkers, and all sorts of other stuff. She bought a car from one of her customers, and her husband got permission to hunt on one of her customer's land. Every Christmas she gets tons of gifts from people on her route because she actually takes the time to get to know them. They're friends, or at least acquaintances.

And as I work in customer service I'll admit I say a lot of the same things to customers. But only the stuff that I'm supposed to say. I make the effort to make real conversations with people and they are happy to reciprocate.

No, not 5 hours of dialogue. But the little they say should be somewhat realistic.

If you think the npc dialogue in Skyrim is bad, try playing Two worlds, I wanted to kill myself after playing just under an hour.

Notice how the "repetitive dialog" you hear in real life is very BASIC phrases?
That's the problem with Skyrim. The repetitive dialog is along the lines of "I work with my mother, to sell fruit and vegetables. It's fun most days, but hard work."
If you had a little girl greet you with that line EVERY DAY then you'd think she was mentally handicapped.

Really? I must live in a strange city then because I can't remember the last time I was walking down the street and someone stopped and told me their life story 10 times in a row before I passed. Hm.

Ok.

There is a definite difference between being in a position/job where you get calls from people and what goes on in skyrim. There are only a handful of reasons that someone would call for and so you will often here the same thing. Quite often in the same way.

Greetings are greetings. Things like "hey, how are you today?", "hello", "what's up", "Nice weather", etc. is common small talk. Often directed at you because you are somewhat familiar to them (their postal service provider for example). This is more along the lines of the lines you get from the NPC's that you try and talk to but don't actually have any dialog to go with them. They just feed you some scripted line.

How about comparing it to a real life example. Simply walk down the sidewalk of a semi busy street. If I walk down the sidewalk of the main downtown street in the city where I'm from (pop. ~30,000), I will probably pass a couple hundred people. Maybe ~1K on a particularly busy day. I can easily walk down and not have a single one say anything at all. If I walk through Whiterun, the only talking I should hear is npc's talking to each other, npc's at the market vocally advertising their product, etc. If my character was involved in a major event, then I may hear some whispering between npc's about me as they see me (something easily missed if not paying attention), and on more rare occasions, have an npc say something to me directly.

Instead, almost every npc that you pass by will give you a line. Randomly picked from just a handful of lines. Said exactly the same way. It's not realistic at all.

I don't understand this either. There are four actors who say, "Some people call this junk, me? I call them treasures" that takes up the same amount of disk space as if they'd had a different line each.
