Repetitive NPC dialogue is realistic

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 2:15 pm

I don't know why people complain that NPCs keep saying the same stuff over and over.
Anybody who has worked in any kind of customer service or public service type of job would know that people say the same stuff, make the same queries, the same complaints and react in the same way to alot of stuff.
Not just at work. If you live with people you should be seeing alot of repetitive stuff going on. Perhaps even YOU are repetitive when it comes to telling people to do or not to do certain things at certain times...

So they put it in the game too, what's the big deal? What are people expecting? You want each NPC to have 5 hours worth of dialogue? Thats just not realistic.

Personally I don't think its too bad, mostly just background noise to break the silence.

Although Adrianne really bugs me when I'm busy working at the forge in Whiterun because she repeats the same line over and over again while I'm busy. They should have added a better timer for those lines so they aren't too frequent.

Yeah, the annoyingness mostly comes from Adrianne and Lydia. (I know you're ssSSSWWWWWOOOOOOOORRRRNNNN to carry my burdens, woman! Shut the damn hell up a minute!) The guards occasionally get a trifle annoying when they say stuff like "Hey, you're like me, you don't bother with those clunky two-handed weapons" while they've got a battleaxe on their backs, or refer to me as a "sneak thief" or something.

"Hey, how are you?"

Option A: "I'm fine." (Lie and get the f*k out of there so you can go home and blow your whole day on the internet)

Option B: "I feel like sh*t. And so do you." And end up starting a conversation with another human being, which is uninteresting in every way.

Huh... You may have a point.

Imagine that. Some guy walking around a market, every day for his entire life, just to poke fun at random strangers with the same line.

I worked as a meat Clerk for three years and I never heard the same thing spoken by the same or different people over and over and over again. Nor did everyone I pass find my wolfish grin 'unsetteling', noooor did everyone know that it was me (though they never met me before in their lives) that I had slayed the Glenmoril Witchs..though I never did that in real life. Point is, its unrealistic that everyone says the same thing over and over again, even to the same people who repeat the same dialogue with no new reactions or responses. Anyway, I find it about as realistic as one can get for a video game, but to say its realistic as in it mimics real life is going too far. Personally, I would love to go back to text.

Have you met my husband Nazeem? Check the Jarl's backside, that's usually where he stuffs himself these days.

So OP, your saying that every time you speak to your partner/friends/co-workers, they say the same single line over and over, and nothing else?

/thread.

Then people would complain that NPCs are "lifeless" and have "worse AI than Oblivion". You can't win.

At least it's better than the old mudcrab line from OB. I swear Imperials only ever talked about their crabs,

They already are... It's just when they say the same line, they are reminding you of how lifeless they are... Atleast this mod helps to hide this a little.

There is a reduced greeting distance option in that mod.

Hello.
Good day.
I saw a mudcrab the other day, nasty creatures.
Is that so?
Goodbye.
Good day.

Yes, much more realistic.

Think about the little things.
The girlfriend who always nags you about the same thing.
The sibling who you get into the same argument with over the same thing.

Predictable stuff is what I'm talking about. When you know someone will react a certain way everytime. Or a place of work where people always say the same thing to you, or you say the same thing to them. Think reception/sales type jobs.
Thats what I'm talking about.

The main problem is that the trigger for them talking to you is probably too far. I find myself walking "around" some characters (Nazeem, I'm looking at you) just to not trigger their sentence.

Apparently it's quite realistic that every single guard was once an adventurer that took an arrow in the knee and is also a member of the dark brotherhood.

I don't mind the repetitive dialogue at all. The only thing that bugs me is when they say I'm fetching the mead for the companions.

As I said, I was a meat clerk for three years and I know nothing of what you talk about. I saw the same people just about every day (co-workers and customers) and they always had something new to say. Comparing the game to real life isn't the best platform to stand on in that aspect.

Okay the darkbrotherhood bit is a bit false but the arrow in the knee thing was clearly just for laughs

You'll notice that alot of NPCs say stuff like "I used to adventure but (insert whatever)" or "I wish I could adventure/travel but (insert whatever) or even "I used to be a bandit but..." etc etc.
That's realistic. Its all pretty much the same stuff from people who've been through the same sort of thing or had the same sort of ambition or whatever.

One day, I will rip out Nazeem's tongue and feed it to a mudcrab! Oh and the next guard who says "pst I know who you are. Hail Sithis" will die a most painful death, because he knows too much!

Oh and the Fletcher in Whiterun saw me sneaking in the other room (killing the meat vendor lol, but he didn't see the kill). Now, every time I ask him what he has for sale he goes. What do you want you miserable retch? hahahaha I'm like DUDE I just invested in your store, is that how you treat an investor? sheesh! LOL

What about the alchemist in Whiterun. She pvssyrs on and on and on and on, when you are mixing potions. And I wouldn't mind if it was various pvssyr, but no, it's mostly. I have all kinds of potions and ingredients on my shelves. Feel free to browse. lol

"You know i was fearless..."
