Restless Leg Syndrome (am I the only one?)

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 11:28 am

Who here gets restless legs, to the point where they ache and hurt to no mercy? I find that stretching the legs brings temporary relief for up to 20 seconds. Pain-killers help for days at a time but I can't touch those anymore because of my addictive personality.

It's tolerable but sometimes it gets excruciating and unbearable. Anyone else here have this problem?

I used to make fun of those restless leg commercials ("just get up and walk, you lazy [censored]!"). But now-a-days my legs feel rather heavy and achy occasionally, and no amount of using them will stop it. I don't know if it's restless leg, but it sure makes getting to sleep difficult.

I get it, but it doesn't bother me as much as it used to, not sure why though. Back when I worked the evening shift it drove me insane while trying to sleep. There's never any pain with it, just an uncomfortable (almost) tingling sensation in my legs that was only relieved by moving around.

Yea, I told my two friends about my RLS and they said it's because I sit on my ass, which isn't actually true. I do my fair share of sitting like everyone else. But no amount of leg movement helps. I even said no excersize helps it, but it just gave them an excuse to mock me. That really pissed me off.

If you don't mind me saying, they don't sound like very good friends if they are mocking you for having a very real condition...either that, or they're awfully immature and don't understand, or care what RLS is and how it affects people. Either way it's probably best not to bring up the subject with them again.

It was ignorance at its finest that's for sure. They were both my best friends for quite some time, that particular conversation was a year or two ago. They were good friends and never put me down or anything. I don't think they understood, but ones in prison now and the other turned into my drinking buddy. Now I'm not friends with him either because he just wants to argue every time he gets drunk.

But that's off topic. I find that a beer to two actually helps with the RLS, but I heard it can make it worse.

Mine was at it's worst when I was still drinking, but I don't really know if that caused it to get worse or if it was something else. I'm just glad that it doesn't bother me like it used to, still does sometimes, just not at the frequency or intensity as it was.

It probably has something to do with dopamine receptors, from what I've researched. For me it can be bad one day then non-existent the next. Some people have had to resort to medications it can get so severe. While laying in bed it goes away some of the time, other times it can disturb my sleep.

Ive had it since i was a child, i found elevating my leg above the trunk of my body helps, well basically it cuts off the circulation and it goes dead, but it needs to be elevated, ive been trying to make an easy movable device and that i can raise that i can put my leg in when it aches, when im sitting at the computer, but so far no luck. I found only ordinary pain killer help more than really strong pain killers, no idea why, but i try and not take them since i already live on pain killers.

Supposedly theres a parkinsons medication thats supposed to help, but my doctor doesnt believe me so wont let me try it out.

Nope, but if I put my foot down a certain way, or if I'm nervous, my leg starts bouncing and bouncing as if I'm leaning on a nerve or something. I remember once it was actually bouncing that high it was coming down with a stomp, it was interesting to watch since I wasn't controlling it :D

My left leg constantly hurts more than my right. But I refuse to believe RLS is a real medical condition. I believe it's because as I grow older I become less inclined to do things that I once did in my youth. I don't know what it is.

I usually take Advil to help dull the pain.

I have pain in my left leg occasionally. Whether it's RLS or not I don't know, but when I get the pain ibuprofen does the trick.

RSL is a real condition and it has nothing to do with the occasional ache in your legs. If that's all you've ever felt, then you've never had it.

Anyway, I've occasionally had restless leg syndrome before. It usually happens when I stay up too late and my body enters a heavy state of exhaustion. I'll be lying in bed and one of my legs will get an awful, surging tingling sensation that is only relieved by moving them. It's next to impossible to ignore.

My other half has it, it's quite a major problem with her sleep. One of the treatments is a dopamine agonist but I think they're reluctant to prescribe that sort of thing as it often has problematic long-term side-effects of the sort that sometimes don't go away.

I shake my legs pretty much constantly while I'm sitting down, not sure that I'm doing it to avoid an uncomfortable feeling though so I guess it doesn't count as RLS.

Second time in an hour I've had to edit a post because I put 'and' instead of 'an', I'm losing my touch.

Huh, so that's what that is. I asked a doctor about it and they looked at me like I was freaking crazy. Granted mine is very very infrequent, and only seems to occur in bursts. Or perhaps I had something else, but the symptoms look the same as described on wiki.

Yeah, I'm not sure what I do is RLS. I can't keep my legs/feet still for very long. Constantly bouncing my leg or wiggling my feet. I think I could keep them still - its probably just habit. Seems to me its related to not being active enough. If I had to do a lot of manual labor for hours a day (like our ancestors did to survive) I probably wouldn't feel the need to keep the blood circulating.

Pretty much this, although I have to stand up for like 8 hours in a row at work and I still do it.

Research shows that mastvrbation/six leading to orgism reduces the symptoms of RLS.

If you're having problems sleeping because of RLS, there are ways to deal with it. :deal:

I thought it was an advertising gimmick.

I think leg twitches are sometimes normal in sleep. I heard it's something the body does to realize it's not dead. Cats and dogs do it too. Not saying it's what restless leg syndrome is.

I have RLS-like symptoms when I try and fall asleep. During the day I don't have a problem with sitting still (I do prefer more movement than non), but when I try and fall asleep I end up rolling around in the bed for 30 min. to 1 hr (and sometimes longer) before I actually fall asleep. I've tried forcing myself to just lie there but I always get progressively more uncomfortable until I move. :swear: Edit: Once I am asleep I'm like a log, though, I don't move around-- at least to my knowledge.

Reading the Wiki article apparently the leg-bouncing I've been yelled at for in public more times than I care to count is another potential symptom. I don't want to self-diagnose, though.

Yes that is true for me atleast. It's the soothing feeling after the big bang that helps.
