Restricting Fast Travel to Make it More Fun

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 8:38 pm

This game already has plenty of ways to travel between places, inlcuding carriage fast travel, normal fast travel, actaully walking from one place to another. Fast travel however look too much like teleporting and this way it misses a lot of role-playing options that could come into work if the player was to chose the destination path.

My sugestion is that when the player fast travels from one place to another he has to click on all intermediary road destinations to select a path in the world map (similar to what happened in Fallout 1).

The world map the shows the player marker move along the path with the possibility of any random and special encounters happening along the path the player has choosen.

This is a more role-playable way of fast traveling and many skills can come into play with this method.
  • The player may choose to travel day and night instead of traveling by day and resting by night, taking half the time however iand ncreasing the chance of encounters during the night.
  • A survival skill which allows the player to automatically collect ingrideants and hunt for food typical of the region / path he his traveling into.
  • This survival skill increases the chance of beneficial random encounters and reduces hostile random encounters.
  • Fast travel requires proper water and food resources and proper clothing for weather protection depending on the region the player is traveling.
  • The player may choose to stop at road taverns for resting, spending a certain amount of gold per stop making fast tarvel more safe.
  • Traveling in caravans follows the caravan pre-destinated path.

I agree with you!

I was starting to get a little bored/overwhelmed with Skyrim until I decided to make a non-fast-travel character. It's totally rekindled my love of Skyrim. :P

I don't know. I feel fast travel is meant for people who don't like/have the time to walk across the map all the time. If you're looking for roleplay wouldn't you just walk/take a carriage instead of fast travel?

Honestly, Skyrim is a game where it is actually FUN to NOT fast travel. Just go for it.

I think it is more interresting to wander through the wilderness - you can explore the world. Okay, it takes a long time, but for me it is worth and a part of roleplay (like primary needs).

Well, traveling without fast travel is very fun and i spend 10 mins walk while i can fast travel in 10 sec is luxury.

Seems like i could do that after i retired, it just won't happen now.

As always, there is no need to change a completely optional mechanic.

The people who want it changed are usually not the people using the feature in the first place.

This. Sheesh

People who use fast travel use it because they want to get to a place ASAP. If you don't like it, don't use it. We're not going to RP your idea just to appease you.

sometimes i like to wander, if im near an objective...

if i've never been in that area before then possibly yes but....

but no fast travel would annoy me...

traveling from one side of the map to the other = tedious...

I never fast travel anywhere.
The ONLY times I ever did in Oblivion where just to pick up armour mods - about 3 times I think.
Fast travel is an immersion breaker for me.
In Morrowind it was justifiable as you had to pay someone in a mages' guild - Oblivion/Skyrim - no.

I could barely stand not having fast travel at least being available. Of course, I started this series with a game (Daggerfall) where fast travel was almost mandatory due to the long distance and featureless wilderness between towns. <_<

Ive disabled fast travel and increased the carriage prices. Its so much better walking everywhere. You see so much more of the game.

I really don't understand how the first one makes the game more fun, since you already don't have to fast-travel if you don't want to. But if you need it, cool, I guess.

it removes the temptation of using it at all for us players with no self control :)

Yeah, but there was still a chance for random encounters. There was a sense of danger when fast travelling.

Well, since i have to visit 3 every half hour to empty my inventory, it would be dead for me^^ (and yeah, i'm a total "hmm i've entered a new room in a dungeon now lets see where can we got free stuff" guy:P)

Meh. I'd rather just keep fast travel the way it is. Those that don't like it already have horse carriages.

You...you use a "no fast travel" mod...seriously? Is it that hard to control yourself?

I am so ashamed that such a thing exists right now :sadvaultboy:

...There was? I've been playing Daggerfall for fifteen and a half years now and I've never had an encounter while fast travelling (though of course I understand that was originally intended to be in the game). The only danger I ever had was if my character got diseased during a dungeon crawl, and I had to make sure I had time to get to a temple.

They were referring to the fact that fast-travel is completely optional, so having a mod to remove it is basically acknowledging that you don't have the willpower to just not use it in the first place.

Yes it's more fun not fast traveling due to (sometimes) crazy random events happening, however due to the quest layout it gets old rather quickly. Pick up a quest in Riften only to find out you have to travel to the other side of the map and then back again. Pass.

Keep it local.
