[REQ] Retexture

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 6:38 pm

I was wondering if it were possible to get someone to retexture one of the ingame armors, the Powder Ganger Plain Outfit.

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/9491/30747174.jpg

I'd like it if the coat and pants were olive drab and dirty/faded. Also, the NCRCF tags removed, please.

If it's at all possible to remove the buttoned up shirt under the coat and leave the default undershirt exposed, that would be great.
But if not, then that's fine.

Thanks a lot!

I am trying to do it myself, using Photoshop, but when I save it, it always comes out all faded. Like the brightness and contrast are crazy high.
And the file size is huge, compared to the original.

What DXT settings are you using when saving your edited .dds? Should be DXT1 (no alpha).

Uhmm, I'm not sure.
I don't see any DXT when I'm trying to save it.

I can remove the NCRCF stuff and adjust the color so it looks pretty good.
But my Photoshop is pretty crappy, it saves it weird :S

If you're saving as a .dds from Photoshop, you should see a DXT options window after you click save. It has a drop down menu with various DXT settings DXT1 is the top one and has two sub settings - no alpha or 1 bit alpha.

I could give it a shot, I've been meaning to do something with Powder ganger stuff anyway. No promises though, I'm busier than I'd like to these days.

Mine actually turns out pretty good, but I can't seem to figure out how to save it.
I have an old, crappy version of Photoshop, maybe that's the problem.

Are there any better, free programs I could use instead?

If you can open a dds. then saving it shouldn't be a problem, at least not one on Photoshops end, which version are you currently using?

I think it is Photoshop version 6. When I open a dds, it looks weird. Like, there is the square picture and next to it is a smaller copy and next to that is a smaller copy and etc.
Also, when I save it... It comes out like 5x bigger in filesize and the contrast is way off. And sometimes it tells me that the dimensions are wrong.
Artsy fartsy stuff is not my forte. :P

Something free that's better than Photoshop? I think not....

Besides which, dds settings depend on the dds plugin, which is from nvidia, and not on Photoshop itself. Follow what I said and you should have no problem.

If you see no DXT options window when you save, something is wrong with your dds plugin so redownload it:

Actually, I'd say GIMP is better than Photoshop 6, I remember using that but it was a while ago. I'm using Photoshop CS5 right now and would never use anything else, GIMP is weird to get used to if you're coming from a Photoshop background, but I hear it's at least functional.

I use Photoshop 7, I think that's an old version. I have the DDS plugin but mine rarely works. I can do normal maps with it better, but rarely need to change them. What I do instead is save my texture as a JPEG, or .PSD then open up http://dds-converter.software.informer.com/ and convert it into a DDS with that. Works nicely :)

PS7 is a fairly old version yeah, I believe I used that back in 2002 or so, back in my Morrowind days basically. CS5 is the latest one, though I skipped directly from CS3 to 5, I do recommend CS5 greatly though, it's expensive, even with a student license that knocks a huge chunk of the price off, but it's a great tool.

I've gotten pretty used to PS6's tools while trying to edit the Powder Gangers outfit myself.
Removing the NCRCF letters from the coat and replacing it with just... the coat. And making it similarly textured. Pretty difficult, but doable. It's not perfect, and if you look real close, it's fairly obvious that some sloppy work was done.
Maybe after I changed the color to olive drab it would be less noticable.

I've messed with it ever since I posted this topic. Uninstalled the dds patch and reinstalled. It won't save properly :(

It's not a huge deal, really, I guess. I was actually gearing towards a 'Bill' from Left 4 Dead look.
That Powder Ganger outfit recolored (if you could remove the buttoned up shirt underneath the coat) + an NCR beret = Bill. :)

Use GIMP. That's what I use. Free and works great.

I didn't notice this link before I replied. If you are going by the picture on the right, I did something very similar for FO3: you can match the merc grunt outfit and the coat from Tobar's outfit in Blender. You wouldn't even have to retexture, just maybe remove the name tag.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that guy.
That is a good idea.

Ugh, but Blender is way harder than a simple retex.
I tried to fix a small problem with iron cuirasses in Oblivion and ended up destroying the nifs X)

Oh, yes please. :)
I'll PM you my email address.

Does it work with the vanilla texture files? Or do I need something special for it?

I just sent it. Let me know how it works for you. Works fine for me in both FO3 and FNV .
The .nif is mapped to vanilla textures, but I included the textures I used, which remove the nametag from the coat and match the color of the pants with the color of the coat.

I'm fiddling around with NifSkope right now.
It looks normal, except the coat is white -- no texture.
Trying to figure out how to map the texture you sent me to it.

So I click on the white coat and it takes me down to NiTriShape, upperbody01
I right click on that and click on block -> Insert -> NiSourceTexture
Then I select the coat.dds texture.
But nothing happens :o It's still white.
