I know I don't have much of a reputation on these forums, but when I play DnD and other role playing games, Charisma and speech are areas I focus a large portion of my skills in. Knowing that we were getting companions in New Vegas, I was really looking forward to taking speech as a tag skill along with taking perks like Lady killer and confirmed bachelor. however, having played as far as I did with that character and reading through my Prima players guide book, Obsidian really dropped the ball on this one. The perks are only used a handful of times at most in he entire game. Also, most of the speech challenges aren't that useful either. Sure, there are a few exceptions, but to me, they are not worth it compared to the point investment to get your skill up high.
While you can play however you want, the MO is really the same. Pick a primary form of combat for one skill, repair and lockpick. Go adventure, kill bad guys, enjoy the dialog options the game gives you, and when you see a locked door, just pick the lock.
Barter - useful, but it's related perks are a waste. Also, the games barter checks are almost all exclusive to "give me moar $$$ for this quest." It's a "make the game easier" skill. More caps makes life easier.
Energy Weapons - Solid combat skill
Explosives - Not a fan. Don't hate it, just not a fan.
Guns - that's how I play
Lockpick - One of the best skills. Get into locked stuff, simple as that. 25 skill for beginners, after level 10 or so try to go for 50. At some point get it up to 100 if you want to go back and try all those locks you couldn't get into before.
Medicine - Without mods, the game is too easy on you. With 25 skill I haven't care about this at all. There are a few time, but not many, when the game asks for a medicine check.
Melee - Fun, but not a very good primary form of combat. Sad that this game doesn't have a nice close quarters combat system. I would like this as a minor combat skill to my guns, but why? When i have shotguns, who needs a knife?
Repair - Between tiems when the game makes repair checks and the overall usefulness of this skill, it is also a good one for flavor/role playing. "When was the first time you learned the value of a good mechanic?"
Science - A very useful skill in real life and in New Vegas. Hack computers and more. intelligence is the god stat and Science is one of the better non-combat skills. The world is filled with tech.
Sneak - Everything I have read and seen indicates this is a nice skill in the early game and bad/useless in the late game. Fun at first, but in the long run, a waste of points.
Speech - Again, i am disappointed in this skill. I wanted to take it so bad, it pains me to say how almost useless this skill really is.
Survival - Like with medicine, without Mods, this is worthless skill as well. The recipes are fun, and if that's what you are into, that's fine, but this is a skill you should think about as your character is late in the game and has other useful skill filled out.
Unarmed - See melee. Fun, but not very piratical. Again, feel free to play as you wish, but I don't recommend this skill, nor do I see the value in it outside of toying around and having "a good time punching bad guys to death."

For my character I am looking at: 5, 3, 5, 7, 7, 6, 7 Guns, Repair, Lockpick, with "Fast Shot" and "Good Nature" as traits. Average strength and endurance with above average luck, charisma and intelligence. Perception was a semi-dump stat. i play with my HUD off. I didn't want it at 1 because from a role playing point of view, I didn't want to have skills under 3 or over 7.
Perks I am looking for: Quick reload, educated, toughness rank I, toughness rank II, shotgun surgeon or Finesse maybe both, Robotics expert, Jury Rigging, possibly weapons handling for those mini guns or the super sniper rifle, and finally what ever. At that point the game is pretty much over and you are a demi god anyway.
