An rpg to hold me over?

There's a slew of good RPGs on PS2. Dragon Quest VIII is amazing. Persona 3 and 4 will also last a long time.

As far as cRPGs go, I'd say Risen is a good choice.

I just remembered one: Two Worlds. One of the "so bad it's good" games. It's pretty fun, especially if you like to collect armor and constantly upgrade your weapons and armor.

Gothic 1, 2 and 3(with the communitypatch)
Risen
Arcanum (top down view game, but it can be considered a sandbox as the map is open to run around, and it is also better an RPG than anything from recent years)
Fallout: New Vegas

Some non-sandbox good RPGs:
Fallout
Fallout 2
Planescape: Troment
Vampire - the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Deus Ex

The voice acting is worth it alone.

Daggerfall.
Morrowind.

Far Cry 2 (not an RPG, but still a lovely game, set in an open world.)

Fallout New Vegas.... Best written, best careccterization of any RPG Bethesda has released to date.

Obsidian took what Bethesda had done with Fallout 3 ( which was basicly transform it into SCI-FI TES ) and evolved the game taking basic game and combat mechanics to the next level.... they introduced faction reputation and the ability go in disguise among enimy npc's.

A large ammount of the characters have believeable and interesting backstories...even ones that arnt necessarily tied to major quests... will tell you about themselves when asked , you get a real sense of who they are, how they feel about certain things which adds to the sense that your in a real world.

Like I said, from a narritive/characterization perspective it's absolutly the best rpg to be released from bethesda.

Obsidian took the IP to such narritive hights...
that theres a good chance that Skyrim might be a let-down in certain aspects.
