Sad that Bethesda Couldn't Fix PC Interface

I mean, seriously...all these years of development, and they have to saddle PC users with a cumbersome and ineffectual console interface.

Just unbelievable. Now we have to wait the modders to fix this mess...again.

I remember Todd Howard raving about how good the interface is in every single preview.

I guess he forgot to say "... on consoles! Derp!"

Who's to say it needs fixing?

(You disliking it doesn't make it "broken," I guess would be the point I'm making here.)

It's not like it's a surprise. Bethesda clearly stated their design intent was console oriented. Everyone knew modders would have to fix the mess they gave us.

Remember when Pete hines said that the Interface wasn't final and that PC users would have something different at E3?

Not surprised, but I was planning to play with a controller anyway :P

So, basically a repeat of Oblivion, which also had a console friendly UI. Oh well, modders will fix it, as usual.

It's not just OP. The PC interface is broken. It's counterintuitive, sometimes clicking is an option and sometimes not (no clear reason or distinction why), you have to scroll via the keyboard and can't using the scrollwheel, radial interface only lets you look at one item at a time, can't see an item's stats unless it's selected. Compare this to Morrowind where you can see your entire inventory at a glance and equipping something is as easily as dragging it and dropping it onto your character.

Luckily, I have a controller. And the modders are on it.

I'm not sure if it's universal or if just for my PC. I was so disgusted with it I switched over to a controller without bothering to try and fix it.

I don't understand how their developers can write this amazing engine and create this huge game, but can't take the time to make a proper UI for what is likely to be half their user base.

I'm pretty impressed with how the game looks at low settings. It will be interesting to see what Modders can do with it.

I'll have to try out the interface myself, but there's always a few people who make interface modifications.

They know that 1) PC users will buy it anyway and 2) modders will fix it. They don't have to, so they don't. Business.

If what people say about the key-bindings and interface are true, then this is a total [censored] shame.

Easy, it's called time saving. Developers do it all the time, nothing to be surprised about really.

No offense, but I hope it is just your PC, as no scroll wheel for the PC is just stupid on Bethesda's part if they really did leave out the ability to use the mouse wheel.

I have to agree with the others... the PC interface is really bad. Getting through it is horrible (you kinda have to have one hand over in the WASD section, another hand on the arrow keys and another hand on the mouse... Wait... that's three hands...).. You run into all sorts of problems, like the mouse cursor not really registering on what you are pointing at, it not selecting the thing you click on (annoying in dialogue when you say something other than what you wanted), etc. Plus creating a character at the start was kinda painful (the sliders do not work like PC sliders should). You really need to use the keyboard instead of the mouse if you want stuff to work a lot of the time.

Don't be discouraged though... Game is still awesome. And for those modders interested, looks like the Interface is made of swf files. Plus there are some txt files that map the buttons.

If noone else has, I might have a go at altering the interface when I get home from work.

Mod the damn UI. At least you can.

It's not really fair for Bethseda to charge full price for a broken product, and then tell their customers to do their job for them if anybody complains. Yes, PC users can develop mods for the game. But it's a little annoying that Bethseda expects them to and charges full retail. It's not ethical.

Lolol the poll on THIS FORUM!? Try looking up the worldwide numbers dude.

Yeah, come to think of it.. probably not a lot of console players visit forums then do they?

Okay, I can admit when I may be wrong :P

Anyway.. Go Mods! :)

The game was developed with Xbox as the lead console. That is obviously a major benefit to console gamers. The benefit to PC gamers is the access to the modding community. This will be fixed, quickly too. I know it must be a bit annoying but keep some perspective people, you have potentially the best game of the next few years combined with a huge and talented modding fanbase. It's a gold mine!

You're getting more than your money's worth for the content in this game, and the creation kit is free. I really don't wanna hear it. No offense.

No, I'm not getting my money's worth, not relatively. That's my point. I'm paying the same price as a console user, correct? The console user's product is polished, the menus work well, the graphics are top notch, etc. The product I'm getting has clear UI issues, but I'm getting charged the same price as I would be for a working one and told to fix it myself. Obviously I don't care enough to avoid the company because of this, it's still a fantastic game and I'm going to enjoy it, and there's workarounds (controller, eventual mods, etc), but that doesn't make Bethseda's practices ethical. But, that's business. Do whatever you can to make the biggest profit.

tl;dr: I've fixed it so I'm still going to enjoy the game, but it's derpy that Bethseda expects me to do their work for them.

If you don't want to hear complaining about the PC port, than ignore threads like this that are clearly designated for criticism. No offense.

Oh I didn't realise the game was completely broken. From what I gathered the console wasn't very well developed for PC. But that obviously means the game is 100% unplayable. It'll be modded within a day or two I'd say. I understand it's annoying but some perspective please.

I'm not saying "derp game totally not playable everything is ruined forever boycott bethseda they pander to console kiddies." I'm just saying it's a derpy attitude to blame your consumers for not fixing the flaws in your own product.
