Sandbox Map means to walk everywhere. Or dose it

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 6:46 am

On fallout "3" and the 5 add-on game packs, the maps were outstanding. As one of the most recognised Sandbox games, the maps / world you roam is SO important. It is the soul, the flavour of the game.
Fallout New Vegas really lets the side down... Did anyone walk round it before putting it up for sale?
So far I am 37hours in... I have gotten stuck on a ramp in the primm hotel, jumping from one side of the hole to the bathroom, and got stuck between the wall and ramp. Reload to get out.
Floating bottles, other bits not touching ground or shelves.
loads of conductors on shelves that you can not be pick up.

Soil that has invisible sides, 7 seen so far... Really not happy with this rookie mistakes.
In fallout 3, there are mountains you could climb... Now there are these stupid curved straight lined units that look like you can cut over, but an invisible barrier stops you even if your on it... And these are not on the edge of the map... Its lazy and often is just guiding you to a hidden place... Its a Sandbox game, and once found a straight line or trying to sneak, or avoid a fight is more important. Hate this new tool, stop using it.
I wonder what else will be found as I travel through this freezing world... Oh hang... On its based in a desert, now what could I mean.

sandbox map mean you are free to go where you please, to the point your character can actually traverse the landscape. There are some places where i wish they made it look like you couldn't climb rather than putting an invisible wall.

It's an Obsidian RPG.
Not a Bethesda RPG.
Point?
Well, you know how Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3 all had sandbox maps?
And you could go whereever you wanted?
Well.
That was because Bethesda wanted to design it that way.
Obsidian went another route.
Just cause it uses the same engine and assets as FO3 doesn't mean it would be just like FO3.

I have yet to lay this game so I have a question does that mean it looks like miles of emptyness in all directions but you can only walk a pre defined path thats in the middle of it simmilar to that of Fable 1 and TLC ?? or do i have the complete wrong idea?

Erm... if you see a big ass mountains with a lot of rocks where it gets steeper than you can be rest assured that the rocks will have invisible walls to keep you from going off the map (since there isn't anything behind the mountain.)
So most of the invisible walls are at, ahem, "logical" places.
But mostly it's like this, you see somewhere you want to go? Then go there.

Fallout had no add-ons and while it may have been sandbox to a degree, if you went somewhere you weren't supposed to and weren't high enough level, chances were good you'd get stomped and have to reload.

Soil that has invisible sides, 7 seen so far... Really not happy with this rookie mistakes.

If you honestly expected this game to be exactly like Fallout 3 then you did not do your homework before you bought it. Fallout: New Vegas is closer to Fallout and Fallout 2 than it is to Fallout 3, and is designed by a lot of the same people who designed the original Fallouts. Yes, there are some invisible walls, but I think I've only come across one so far in my playing time, and I've explored a good portion of the southern part of the map.

Just because it's the same engine as Oblivion and FO3 does not mean you will be able to jump straight to the end as soon as you start a new character. Not even close. If you have issues with it, maybe you should have done some research on the types of games Obsidian develops, before buying an Obsidian game.

Also: You're going to annoy a lot of people calling Fallout 3 "Fallout" - please don't. It's not.

It's an open world but unlikely FO3 many cliffs and what not in the interior have invisible barriers.

I've been stuck on a few of them as well. I don't have a problem with them blocking certain areas off because you're not supposed to go there (like the southern half of the Repconn facility) but I was surprised that it was fairly easy to smack in to them in some areas. Most places they're back far enough that you don't notice them.

If you are on the pc, tcl ensures you will not have to reload. Given the complexity of the maps, there are bound to be places missed that should have been 'clipped off' where you will get stuck. Nobody is perfect.

Yes I did expect Fallout4 to be the same as Fallout3... Why is that wrong of me? Shouldn't all things move forward, and build on success, and try to improve upon it... In a few things they have done this.
The Infinity Ward Modern warfare people let someone do their game, and the really made a mess of it, destroying the fan base, they have now taken it over again With Modern Warfare2 and all is well.

However form what you tell me these guys did Fallout 1 &2... Left FO3 to be built by another company/partner (Who really cares) they knock it out the park, sold loads of games... But thought they would do a piss poor copy of the game...
And its my fault that I didn't do my research on the boring ins and out's of the company's infrastructure, and filtering all the hype and marketing crap? Are you on something, or are you employed by the Fallout guys, as your logic is a little off?

All these short cuts and rookie mistakes only show lack of care for the game and the end customer... Others would say its a making of a fast buck, on the back of Fallout 3 game.

If fallout 4 was a car it would be a budget car with a poor paint job, and to many fixings missing to stop rattles and squeaks... But its still a car, that gets you from A to C just don't try to get to B, go via C. lol

I for one will not purchase another Oblivion game without a 6months passing and the rose tinted glass have dropped, and firm data is easer to get hold of on the quality of the game. After all the world is the GAME! Or why put New Vegas in the title.

The Fallout 3 map was not without it's issues. I got stuck in a couple places that required me to reload a prior save. I came across several instances of items "floating" in the air. One of my favorites was shooting a deathclaw and watching it launch into the atmosphere.

Fallout 4 is out already? Where?

Calling Fallout: New Vegas as Fallout 4 just blew your credibility to pieces. Secondly, there are plenty of places in Fallout 3 where you can get stuck in the scenery or landscape so the argument in your original post it meaningless. Finally, "floating" items. The unofficial fallout 3 patch fixes many instances of this so perhaps Fallout 3 isn't as perfect as you think.

I've got to admit the invisible walls have annoyed me somewhat, forcing me to walk aaaall the way around when I've just wandered up a not-so-steep hill and I my destination is so close! Either make the cliffs truly unscalable or just let me pass, please.

Besides the greatly appreciated revival of the franchise, the only thing Fallout 3 did was strip features and basically remodel Oblivion. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the entire Elder Scrolls series and this is overly simplified to the point of being insulting but we are dealing with an individual with no experience it seems with the prior games. In effect Fallout 3 was a huge step back from the legacy games. To be honest if I picked this game up and it was that similar to Fallout 3 I would most likely not have bought it. What Obsidian did was take a huge step forward into delivering the kind of game Fallout 3 should have been, incorporating old school game mechanics with a modern in-depth feel which very few games can really come close to. You complain that the game is buggy and it is I'll admit but it combines elements that nobody has ever reliably built into a single game. Should they have pushed back the release date? Sure, but you would still be here complaining about why a company is going to make you wait longer to get your pre-order. They are working on a patch to fix as many problems as possible and those who know whats involved in the process are content knowing the errors are getting fixed even as they read this post. You wanted your game on the announced release date and you got it, now instead of having the entire fan base screaming for blood they have a group of gamers far beyond what they can hope for informing them of issues they can attend to with the patch they release. Anger is understandable to an extent but announcing all out war because every problem in the game wasn't magically solved on a very tight time crunch is highly unreasonable for the work put into it.

Your right I have indeed only played Fallout 3... One of the elder scroll games with all that mythical crap, I found very old hat. However Fallout 3 gave a modern twist, that was fresh to the RPG world of gaming and I hope it continues.
I also started FO3 some 6months after it came out, so most of the bugs had been solved... But I'm unsure why I have to apologise for myself, for not knowing the the fine "Geek" points that have been thrown in my direction. I am a customer / consumer of the game, this should indeed be enough for me to have an opinion, and I did play Fallout to a platinum level and 3 of the 5 add-on games.

One of you had a go at the way I short cut Fallout New Vegas, to fallout 4... What a little ass you are TBH, it is the 4th game to share the name "Fallout", no matter who has made it, It has been sold as a Fallout game in the fallout world.
if you can't cope with this fact that would be your problem, not ours... If we all used your logic in the really world, the whole system would collapse, every time a company was Sold, moved county / country, farmed out a product line, or licences etc. So kindly wind your neck back in.

The release date is made by the company, and is part marketing, ordering system to shows interest, and product value etc, not to mention a nod to the fans that there will be another coming soon. But they are the ones who make that deadline, and as you say they know what has to be done... These guys are professionals at what they do so why state a time frame that leads to such untidy mistakes.

Don't get me wrong, I love Fallout4 all the improvements with Mods, camp fires and 2 benches are great... The story-lines are good too,as are the new beasts.
But the simple layout of the world we are forced to walk through so slowly on foot, gives us time to see faults. When a ground Skin has a invisible split in it, where it hasn't been matched up after a section has been added or worked on, and there are more than the odd one... That smacks of lack of care, as anyone who has built a map would know, the maker can fly over the map at great speed and detail... The making of the ground is one of the basic and simply things to perform. I'm unsure how you feel you can defend this... Even though this is as you say, the second time it has become a problem and made worthy of note.

I only wish to point out, on this thread; is What is our limit as the Consumer to which we say this just isn't good enough?
We pay full price for the games that take 3 to 6months to debug, we are asked to point out the bugs and problems... But get accused of calling for all out war, or indeed being moaners.
And yet it is our enjoyment that is being ruined by these numerous upsets... And writing on these forums you get blasted by the party faithful, people who want to buy it, or just the plain deluded who think it is fine to pay a premium on a rough product with such stupid mistakes or over sights.

Yet the game companies and publishers are moaning about the Second hand games market, and rental company's... And are trying to sell us content with a one use key, but I would be happy with a polished game, servers that are over booked on space, and so on.
Yet the sorting out the bug's or the imperfections that should have been noticed, simple make it more beneficial for any Gamer to play a game 3 to 6months after it's release for better enjoyment and a saving of £10 to £15 pounds depending on the score it has achieved in the media.
I for one have become very jaded with the Game media, they keep moaning on costs, but never have said we need to get the game working right first time, and get rid of this Debugging system and overly relying on updates and fixes.

And Yes these invisible barriers on easily climb platforms, often on good sniping vantage point, are a bloody pain, lazy and annoying and have no place in the middle of the map. Stop it and stop it now. Now that is a moan, and also a darn good point.

Err, I've frustratingly had completely the opposite experience. See something I want to investigate and inevitably the game will throw invisible walls in my path to stop me. I can't climb the knee high rocks to get into Quarry Junction from the west due to invisible walls, and similarly at Black Mountain and the Repconn test site I have to go the way the game wants me to go.

It's appalling design and svcks all the fun out of exploring.

There is just a little bit of that, but most of the map is open, and you are free to go where you wish and do whatever quest is whatever order you wish.

None of the invisible walls I've found are in logical places... Like the edge of the map... They are in positions that were obviously chosen to bottleneck the player into the openings the devs wanted... IE. the invisible wall next to the Yangtzee Memorial... This runs the length of the gray rock around the quarry, even though there are obvious spots that you'd be able to jump over in Fallout 3...

All of these are present in FNV.

As for the invisible walls ive encountered them inside the "perimeter" of the intended playable space to prevent shortcuts just as cilonen described.

actually from what you're calling it then fallout 3 would be called fallout 5 and fallout new vegas would be called fallout 6 because there was also fallout tactics that came out after fallout 2 and there was fallout Brotherhood of steel for the ps2 and xbox...so...yeah.

Actually they start limiting explorable space from OA. The pipe run is just missing hitbox.

The Pitt is hardly explorable.

BK is slightly better, but the Clawer's interior is way too small....not to mention the new railway tunnel is pretty linear as well.

PLO is either flat or very steep cliff with one cliff side passage.

MSZ is not really a dungeon consider it doesn't fork out, nor multiple levels on the same XY position

A code they definitely need to somehow add to console games. In all console games like this I end up getting stuck somewhere.. Luckily i'm a maniacal save [censored] [other word for lady of the evening.].. so it's usually not a problem for me. But for those who for some reason haven't learned how to save a game I can see how getting stuck someplace could really be a downer.

I'd say Fallout: New Vegas is what fallout 3 was supposed to be, while the actual fallout 3 is more like a... spinoff. Same with fallout tactics and brotherhood of steel.

I hated that I couldnt get by the randoscorpions behind Yangtze memorial, in order to get to sloan even though there was a way to jump up and bypass them. Luckily I play on pc so I was able to get a mod to remove alot of the invisible barriers. Made the game alot more enjoyable.

I never thought that... I always assumed that "Sand Box" meant that the game's encounters were timeless and it allowed you to "play in the pen" indefinitely. All games have walls (just as all pens have an outer edge). Does Sandbox mean "free roam" to most people? Oblivion and Fallout 3 had perimeter walls (whether visible or not), as does FO:NV.

The invisible barriers are over done, I'm not just saying that as a gamer but also a modder, I put on my sun glasses when using the editor because of all the bright red barriers every where!, some of them even look like the dev said "Oh lets just plonk one there", but unlike others I'm not going to compare this with fallout 3, it's supposed be an "open" world, "open" being the key word.

But having made my little gripe, I do have to add that it has not spoiled my enjoyment of the game, I'm on my third character.
