Saving your game

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 4:17 am

I don't know about the Xbox360 and PS3 versions, I have the PC version of Fallout 3 and I thought it was a bit annoying that you could only have one profile at a time and if you started a new game played for a while then go back to your old game it would overwright your new game profile.
I had to backup my different profiles in other folders, it would be better to like have upto 3 different profiles that can't overwright each other.

Only a small idea for Fallout New Vegas

That's the only complaint I had for FO3 other than that it is one of the greatest games iv ever played and it has claimed over 400 hours of my life since 2008 :tops:

Since the title is "Saving your game" I'm just gonna throw something out there that's been on my mind for quite a while.
Saving should only be done at certain save points in the game and if you fail at a speech challenge or lockpick thing then it autosaves.
Why?
This fixes Save Exploits.
[edit]
How about a toggle option then?
When you start the game you can choose if you want to be able to save anywhere or if you want save points.
Wouldn't be too hard for them to implement and us who don't have the self-discipline to leave the exploits alone can force ourselves to with this.

I've never experience auto-save file corruption so I wouldn't know how that's like.
And you would be able to save your game at certain points, which are permanent files until you overwrite them yourself or delete them.

(Those certain points being either neutral or friendly settlements, towns, cities and outposts.)

I'm guessing you didn't read my other posts where I explained that people could toggle it on and off meaning if you don't want it you could play without it but us who do want it can have it.

You can only toggle it once when you start the game, after that it's set.
But yes I do need to have some better self control.

Even so, this feature would hardly be any difficult to implement.
Add a new model (say a machine that looks kinda like the regular computers in FO3 and name it "Save-Log" or something), code it so that "save game" is take out from the menu and can only be activated when you're at this new model.
I don't know exactly how a game is developed but I'm guessing this would take a day or two to actually add.
It's easy, practical and optional.
I see no problems with it. ;)

Well you wouldn't have to use it.

And it's a feature to prevent people who have bad self control from using save exploits.
I find it pretty reasonable.

You know... You don't have to use those exploits...

Why don't you just make a definitive save to go back to if you want to switch characters? Problem solved. Also, if you are on PC I think there are profile managers you can get.

I don't have enough self-discipline to leave them alone.
I know I shouldn't do it but it's so easy to just reload and use it.
Too much of a temptation. :(

Christ no, save points are an abomination, checkpoints are just savepoints you can't go back to, and putting either in an open world sandbox RPG is one of the worst ideas I've read all day.

Well I am very against the idea. I hate autosaves. At least in these games. Them and quicksaves eventually lead to save corruption without fail. If I was forced to have one every speech challenge, lockpick, etc. I would be very annoyed. Also, are you suggesting that you cannot save manually at all? Because that would be even more awful.

Yeah, having different character profiles with individual save folders (like Mass Effect, for example) wouldn't svck. On the other hand, the overwriting thing only happens if 1) you make a mistake and choose the wrong save to overwrite, or 2) you only use auto & quicksave (you do make manual saves, right? I generally keep a set of 10-15 rotating save files for any character I'm playing.....)

This isn't an issue on the PS3. Auto-saves when you go into a new area or just hit select, wait an hour and it auto-saves. Hit start and bring up the menu and make a hard save. You can make as many hard saves as you like but it only keeps one auto-save at a time.

What I did with pc is I just chose a different save. So if you end your game and someone else wants to play make sure your autoplay is saved to another slot. Idk about the consoles.

I also need to save more. The first time I blew up Megaton someone disappeared (can't remember how to do the spoiler thing) so I had to start over because I saved over the save before I blew it up.

I agree with OP, if he is referring to something like Dragon Age where each character his its own profile, so that the saves do not get all jumbled up.

I really wish you could quicksave on consoles...it's the only thing I miss from gaming on the PC. Especially because the PS3 version of fallout was prone to freezing.

They don't overwrite one another. I've had saves from all the characters I've ever played visible at once before.

Now if you're talking about the autosave then I could possibly see it. But you shouldn't rely on that thing, it's handy in a pinch but it loves to corrupt the save.

Oh god do not want. That annoys the hell out of me when I play GTA. Let me save wherever, whenever and by whoever I damn well want to save, game devs!

Yup. I've got no fewer than 12 characters currently saved and visible.

Yep, they all share the same auto and quicksaves. But I've never yet had a problem with being responsible enough to make sure I save each character off to their own hard save when I switch characters. Not with any game. Ever. My only (minor) complaint is I'd like the ability to name those hard saves instead of them all just being identified by timestamp.

Having a toggle doesn't make it a better feature. You like to use save exploits, but you don't want them available because you can't help yourself from using them? Learn some self control.

I agree, I liked that in Mass Effect all of your characters had all their own separate save files I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've overwritten my main file in Fallout 3. Luckily I always keep two current saves in case I end up doing something stupid like that. :tops:

I think Saving is something that should never be restricted, but only enhanced. The CASM system developed by Cipscis is the best i've seen. His system allows us to save when certain events take place, like gaining levels, finishing quests or when combat ends (I love that one). Timed saves are good but often hit at bad times (like during combat or movie scenes). Having an intelligent saving system is very important IMHO, and thankfully on the modding side we will have CASM. I do think the default game needs to add more flexibility and sophistication to saving.

Saves sorted into character folders would be nice (especially for those of us with many characters), but overwriting isn't really an issue unless you only rely on autosaves and quicksaves. Make a proper permanent save before switching characters and you will have no problem. Naming the save files would also be nice, although not practical for console users (onscreen keyboards used with an anologue stick aren't fun).

God, I so DON'T want limited save points. The lack of a quicksave feature was the sole reason I never finished the first FarCry--that game had one-time autosave checkpoints only, and I always seemed to run through them while I was being shot in the back and about to die. So frustrating. Fixed/limited save locations are only marginally better. I like to save my progress after getting to my mission location, before I start into the task at hand. If I die during the mission and the save system is going to take me all the way back to the last friendly settlement, and force me to repeat the trip there and every fight along the way, repeatedly, that will significantly reduce the fun of the game until I give up in disgust. You would either need save terminals EVERYWHERE, or the much simpler option to save whenever you want.

The devs did mention that they are doing something (they haven't said what) in the casinos to discourage save exploits--maybe you can't save while inside a casino?

Maybe I don't understand... if you save your game, as in [esc] , click on save , the game and profile are saved under our character's name. You can go back to it at any time and it will be there. The only savegames that get over-written are the quicksaves and the autosaves.

The easiest way to solve this whole problem is to let us name the manual saves. We use to be able to do that Fallout and Morrowind, but for some reason this new engine does not let that happen (could we name Oblivion Saves, I can't remember it has been a couple of years since I played that game)

We could do that in the ini with the savegame savename command. However with the UI giving us a name, there is no way to catagorize or seperate out saves. With other games I can name my saves Bethra Going to Rivet City or George Going to Rivet City or Serge Going to Rivet City and woila, all my characters are kept seperate.
